I watch them too. Mainly at work during downtime. Not a Social Media Junkie--

I watched some trailers on an iPhone today in Apple Store. Not a problem with the notch. They could have given us a solid bar up there. But, the notch with the viewing area on both sides helps give the movies a wider view.

First of all, all iPhone aren't MEANT to watch Full Movies like for 2 hours as it causes EYESSTRAIN, Second That is why they make an four different size of iPad because iPads are 4 to 10 times bigger than iPhones.. and better for watching movies and gaming. Also, most people DON'T watches full lengthy videos even iPhone X or iPhone Plus models are TOO SMALL, even you compared it to iPad Mini if you asked me.

iPhones Are made to Text, Take Selfies, and Take Calls.

If you want to watch Movies, then Buy a Tablet or iPad or even Macbook or laptop or go watch it on television they are more bigger and better
This seems like a silly argument, Why even bother with a Youtube or Netflix app on the iPhone then.

Well watching a 16:9 Movies on iPhone Plus Models or iPhone X is too Small... If u c0mpare.
iPhone 5/5S/SE = 6.67 Square inch (Extremely Small like a toy, only use as an iPod Touch, SMS, Calling)
iPhone 6/7/8 = 9.43 Square inch (Very Small like a toy, Minimum for light games)
iPhone Plus = 12.91 Square inch (Still small for several movies, recommended for gaming)
iPhone X = 12.70 Sqi (Absolutely Best for gaming, it's more handy than iPad But still small for movies
iPad Mini 2/3/4 = 22.44 Sqi (Most Minimum Size for Watching 1 hour movie) 1.75 Times bigger.
iPad 9.7" = 33.32 Sqi about 3 Times bigger than biggest iPhone LOL HAHAHA
iPad 10.5" = 39 Sqi on a 16:9 movies best replacement for laptop on watching movies.
iPad 12.9" = 60 Sqi Completely replaces Television, or flat curved tv

Don't ever bother to watch 2.35:1 or climax on iPhone 6/7/8 Plus models those 12.9 square inch will be shrink down to 9 square inch only.. and that is unbelievable small. iPads are still acceptable to watch 2.35:1 they are still 17-51 Square inch still bigger than actual iPhone Screen

I can see watching a few minute Youtube video, maybe a max hour tv show, but I've never found an smartphone the ideal viewing screen compared to a laptop or better yet tv for full 2 or 3 hour movies/netflix.

It's also REALLY bad for your eyes when you get older

Declaring that iPhones are not MEANT for watching movies is a ridiculous statement - using bold caps doesn’t make it less so. iPhones are meant for whatever uses the purchasers intend/need/desire.

The notch isn’t great, but I don’t find it overly distracting. In fact, even with the notch, when “zoomed in” on the iPhone X, you see more of the left and right edges of videos than you see on the 7/8 plus screens when zoomed in. If you don’t agree, do a comparison yourself - I have and it’s obvious.

I’m not sold on FaceID yet. And I think the user experience will be better when more apps are optimized. That said, I think Apple’s direction to developers not to “hide” the notch is a perfect example of the company’s arrogance. Still, I am generally pleased with the iPhone X. The form factor is fantastic. It’s fast. And the screen looks great - regardless of the notch.

The only forgiving aspect about this is that we don't watch full entertainment on phones. Thats more iPad and up territory.

I thought the clips would play in a 16:9 area INSIDE of the notch area. Assuming such a option exists.

But if not...

crazy breach of basic aesthetics principles.
I watched half of Stranger Things 2 on my iPhone 7+, also some other shows. I commute a lot on train. Also I'm a light traveler so I avoid bringing gadgets and chargers whenever I go on trips, especially short ones.

This design, with the notch, is a fail.

But my phone arrives tomorrow, I'm still excited about the smaller size and Face ID. And the fact of it being the latest and greatest.

What about Those small lcd entertainment screens in the back of the seats in airplanes? Why hasn’t passengers sued the airlines yet for Causing eye strain from watching movies on a 10 hour flight. Surely somebody can become a millionaire and retire

I just think they need a third zoom mode to zoom to the notch but not past it, and black out the ears. Then people can choose to maximise the width and accept a bit taken out of the video, or maximise width without biting into the side.

Both options will chop off the top and bottom of the video so better to use with wider aspect ratio content, but obviously that is he users choice.

I underestimated the contrast when the screen goes full screen the surrounding areas are so richly black that it creates a nice effect.
