I’ve had my phone without a case since release day and there are no scratches

It sits in my pocket it on a Qi charger when not in use.

Cases will generate micro scratches along the edge of the phone. Dust/grit/etc gather in there, it's inevitable.

One of the many reasons I don't use cases.

Nothing on my Space Gray yet, in a case since the first 5 minutes that I got it. I wouldn't bother calling Apple/replacing. It's stainless steel, it will always scratch.

Polished stainless steel + case = scratches.

I think only a case with the felt lining like the Apple case can prevent scratches (can still scratch anyway though)

Any other case, if dust or any particles get in between the case and the SS, it will scratch it.

Tiny scratches that are hard to see are ok. A dent or nick (if u drop a case less phone) is probably not.

No case, no screen protector here. Also, no visible scratches. If I have to hold it in a certain way in certain light to see them, the micro scratches might as well not be there, IMO.

It’s stainless steel and glass, what did you expect?

Either use the phone or keep it hermetically sealed.

So don't drop the phone. That's my solution. Been working perfectly since I first started getting iPhones (2007).

I concur. A device that gets used often is expected to get some wear.

I have different expectations.

Like most people, I use my phone constantly. The number of times it goes in and out of my pocket on a daily basis is innumerable. I live on it practically. I also like to feel my phone, interact with it directly. It's part of the reason I enjoy them so much. So, naked phone always.

Here is my iPhone 7 Plus, which I got the weekend they launched and used heavily until I got my X on the 3rd of this month. As always, no case, ever. I took these pics just now with my X:

(It's harder than it seems to get good pics of the edge of a phone, heh ... let alone the screen)

Not sure how you get scratches with a case on...but how did you even notice them with a case on?

For those going naked, any worry about scratching the camera? Or since it’s sapphire that’s not usually the case?

I’ve never scratched a camera lens on any iPhone I’ve owned. I’ll probably grab a silicone case for when I want a little protection but I’m not concerned about it.

Exactly what I’m thinking. Picked up a silicon case too for occasions that may need one but I’m rocking the phone as intended for the majority of the time.

Dust/grit gets between the case and the phone.

And you notice them when you remove the case to trade/sell the device.

The average person who buys on Craigslist and is gonna throw it in a case when They get it, doesn’t care

Just polish it. Works extremely well and is very easy. Do it with my watch all the time and is the reason I got the silver x over the SG, once SG scratches you can’t do anything. Look up stainless steel polishing wipes.

I've done this with my  Watch and it does a pretty good job removing scratches.

I packed up my jet black 7 already, but, after a year of naked use, you can only see scratches by looking very hard in certain light. There are micro scratches, but they’re almost invisible to the naked eye, so I don’t care.

I used my phone and enjoyed it fully, just like I plan to use this one.

...after a week?

I don't have anything empirical to go on as I don't use cases. I know my kids' phones and my wife's will get micro scratches from using cases.

I could imagine grit scratching up the metal pretty quickly though, yeah. I guess it really depends on what gets in there, what kind of little pockets/gaps are between the phone and the case, how tightly it fits, the material of the case... all sorts of things.
