I was aware that the iPhone X was approximately the screen of a Plus in the body of a non-Plus iPhone. While "downgrading" from the Plus to the X may be a shock, physically, I think that will wear off and I, for one, am looking forward to the loss of the excess real estate in the Plus while retaining the size of its screen. For me, the Plus quickly became just a tad too big, protruding for some pockets and sometimes difficult and awkward to handle with one hand (even with shifting the keyboard).

When i got the iphone 5s it felt like the perfect size and my iphone 4 suddenly felt so heavy and small the 5s was so light and a different experience. so strange.
When I got the 6s+ and used it for a while my dad took my 5s and when i help him now i hold the 5s and can't imagine i ever would have paid for it.. it feels like a dinky little bugger. so light and small and the screen is way too small now to work with.

i am curious to see what i think of the X when i play with it in a month or so in the store

  • iPhone X display = 2.46" wide
  • iPhone Plus display = 2.69" wide
Take the horizontal resolution and divide by the PPI. Anyone with elementary math skills can calculate the display width.

The iPhone X display also has a smaller area compared to Plus. This is a mathematical fact.

wow that is a pretty significant difference. I really hope I can get used to this after using plus size phone for the last couple of years.... Or I hope I can at least deal with it until hopefully a bigger plus model is released next year.

My bet is that after people use it on a daily basis... the marginal difference will be negligible in the overall enjoyment of the device.

Being only about the same size as the 5" Pixel or HTC One M8 is one of the reasons why I want it.

Gesture controls and perfect dimensions. The X is like the 5"-5.2" Androids from 2014. LG G3 and Xperia Z3 are also close to it in height. G3 has 5.5" but X is even slightly shorter and thinner. X's size is one if its main selling points. Phones above 145mm-155mm get annoying after awhile.

My right thumb needs to reach the notification shade. It doesn't have to reach the furthest left corner. Just the notification shade. Phones above 155mm is difficult to do that. After three years, try doing that with the iPhone Plus model and it's still difficult to do without some hand gymnastics or just using your other hand.

But, from the perspective of which has more flair, and which would attract more looks and questions from others (a good thing in my life), the X wins hands down.

Wow. People really buy phones so they can impress others?

Am I the only guy here who doesn't give 2 flips what phone someone else is using?

What do you do? Do you go out of your way standing on a street corner to show the phone off? Do you walk next to someone and pull out the phone taking an extra 20 seconds or so staring at it while they are standing next to you... hoping they'll look your way and say "Excuse me, is that an iPhone X you're using?"

Really? LOL

Does it effect you with how someone else gets their kicks? Does it really effect you all that much?

I’m a Realtor. It pays to show off the fact that you do very well. So, I drive fancy cars, wear expensive clothes, and have expensive toys. Nothing says “trust me” like the fact that I’m already successful, which means lots of other people have trusted me.

Not at all.

I do, however, have enough self-esteem and confidence in myself and my every day life happenings to not have to feed off someone else complimenting my phone in order to feel good about myself.

I drive a fancy car too.

Just one of many expensive toys.

If you were to try to sell me a house though... your choice of phone and car would have 0 impact on my buying decision. Looking professional would go a lot farther than if you showed up in shorts and a Tshirt... but really... seriously... I don't care what kind of phone you use.

What?

Jesus some of the complaints on here are bizarre. I get the feeling some people are unable to wake up in the morning unless they carry an iPad Pro in their pocket...

It really is. I am looking forward to the smaller size. Either way, everyone will adjust.

Nice car!

If I met you in a 1990’s KIA wearing a t-shirt, flip flops, and cheap glasses, I bet you’d look at me differently vs if I drove up in my new Lexus GS350, wearing a button up shirt, polished shoes, ceramic Apple Watch and iPhone X.

Certain professions need to look a certain way. It doesn’t necessarily mean you’d use me vs not use me to buy/sell, but, first impressions do count.

P.s. I’d hope you’d use me since I’m a Broker with a huge number of designations and certifications, plus went to law school. I’m a well educated realtor — the best ones all are. ;)

P.p.s. I also really like tech toys, and I’d probably get an X anyways. But, as a realtor, I get to write them off too! So, bonus!

One of the dangers of buying something sight unseen just to be one of the first. Kind of like buying shoes online and hope they fit.

I guess you don’t know about Zappos?

On a phone? Might as well listen to music via a telephone call like they did in the 70's.

Oh fiddle faddle. Watching video or MLB on my iPhone—especially outdoors or on the go—has its own special pleasures.

Thanks! ... and yeah, first impressions absolutely count. No argument from me on that. I see the point you're making! Making a lasting first impression definitely is important... I was mainly talking about a person buying the phone to "show it off" and going out of their way to do that.

To me it's childish and juvenile... but buying it to go with your Lexus and work attire is definitely understandable.

Cheers.

I got the same feeling before. I think the all screen design and high resolution OLED will make up for the difference in overall size. You aren't losing much with the X.

So some folks with an existing phone A are simply 'liking' every post that supports their current device A. Outstanding! And not worried about what people think, but arguing their purchase decision nonetheless (whether it's an 8, an X or a Pixel ...) Hahaha, fantastic!

TYVM!

Not too bad at all!

No in fact, I mostly use portrait, and tend to look at lists of things, so the more vertical lines I have, the better. The layout of information will make a bit of a difference (whether it's width or height biased).

I'm also very interested to see how the increased PPI affects being able to run smaller type. I mentioned in another thread how I like to run our 7 (non-plus) text size smaller to get more on screen (for apps with system scalable type), but there's a point it's starts to degrade (having the clarity of tiny type on some ultra high PPI devices, I'm thinking it will be outstanding). As of late, I've liked carrying the 7 vs. the 6S+.

The comment you made that I quoted was completely subjective, based on something that would require you to have possession of the product in question to ascertain what you committed as fact to be exactly that.

That being said, since the nature of the comment is based on subjectivity, it cannot be determined as fact for anyone besides yourself, as you will experience the product in a different manner than the person sitting next to you. Subjectivity is such a pain in the rear, isn’t it?
I see what you mean. I didn’t read through which post of mine you quoted. You are correct. To say it’s a downgrade for all is not fact and the experience is indeed subjective. Rather, I believe it will feel as a downgrade for me, coming from a Plus. My bad and my apologies.

Fair enough. I personally will be fine for it since I use a Plus right now for personal, but I have to use a regular 7 for work... and that is a much smaller screen size than the plus and is a pain to go to use after using my Plus. That being said, I'm quite sure it'll be a contention point to others who maybe only use one device.
