Based on history, the prices will go up once they are in hand. There’s a large group of potential buyers who aren’t going to pay someone $1600 based on a screenshot, but once you can prove you have it and can ship overnight or meet someone in an hour, the $ will jump.

The number of people getting robbed and/or stabbed in a back alley somewhere is about to go up exponentially.

That's what concealed carry is for. But nor would I be meeting anybody in the back alley to exchange for an iPhone either.

At this point it’s worth noting that these quoted prices are what people are trying to sell for. Although Im sure someone, somewhere, will pay this, just like those people who buy devices and then put them in a blender as soon as they step outside of the store, at the moment there is no evidence at all that anyone has managed to sell a phone for these prices.

Looking on eBay at completed listing, the highest I can see went for £1,849...so I good $1000 premium

EDIT: loads more at much higher prices, e.g. C$4550 for one - never knew 13-year old teenage girls were so wealthy

I purposely bought two with the intention of selling one via ebay/craigslist. You can bet I'm trying to recoup the cost of my $1200 phone. I'll get maybe $4-500 from my iPhone 7 Plus 256gb, then add in the up to $5-600 profit off the X sale, and buddy, you can definitely see the smile on my face.

I’m sure I speak for everybody here when I say I couldn’t be happier for you.

I understand freedom of this economy, but quite honestly people that do this make me sick. There are plenty of people who want these devices, and it also sucks that people will be willing to pay those prices.

But, that is my use case, and I am only in control of my own actions and conscience .

It also bothers me that some of my favorite tech podcasters are actually participating in this type of activity too.

And it’s everything now not just IPhones if you want to see a movie .. concert ... buy anything like a SNES classic there all gone because of bots and scalpers and it’s now sad it’s our new normal.. I totally agree with you! I had friends last night get preorders for launch specifically for scalping and I had friends whom deserved preorders for personal use miss out badly

Just browsed, doesn't seem like people are bidding. But on another note, how are these resellers having it delivered to their customer by Nov 3rd when that is the release date? It would take atleast 1-day over night to reach their prospective ebay customer.

It’s not like these people are being scammed or are forced to pay this. They are paying what they want to get it rather than having to wait over a month. This has been happening since before preorders. It is their choice. As for the sellers, they could be greedy and selfish but sometimes they are not in good financial situations or may do ebay for a living, this is a good product to sell. And if you think about it, the buyers are probably going to be in better situations.
As for the rest of us, it may not seem fair but the people complaining are the ones who didn’t prepare to preorder at the exact time with everything set up or don’t mind waiting a few weeks. The only thing this does is speed up the stock out.
I was prepared and had alarms set up and began refreshing on the dot. The Apple Store app and website both were down for me for 16 minutes. By the time it finally went up, the phone has sold out.

I have a Nov 3 phone via AT&T using Next upgrade. But just got email from Apple saying my reservation is now open and I can buy another phone (but has to be full price since I used the upgrade) and get it Nov 3. If I can make a few hundred on it, why not do this?

I'll fess up and say this. I ordered three phones of course under two different accounts. One to keep, two to sell. My goal is to profit enough from two units to pay for the one I will keep. Call me a scumbag if you want, but paying four figures for a cellphone is insane.

The potential for good profit(s) from me selling two units will help to ease that four figure insanity.

Apple better make sure they have ample supply launch day and meet this demand. The next best thing to getting your hands on an iPhone X (at retail price) is to see scalpers have to take all their devices and return them to the stores.

Damn right! I genuinely see nothing wrong with this.

It's a free market and if someone wants to pay extra to get it quickly from you, that's their choice. Apple charges so much and there is no law against getting your hustle on.

The funny thing is that the law in my country dictates that there is a 14day cool down period, so if i don't sell the 2nd one. I can always return it.

It is only frustrating if being one of the first to own the thing is important to your self image. If it is, consider that you are probably a pretty frustrating person to be around.

I almost feel sad for them. Both. The ones needing a piece of tech that badly. And the ones taking advantage of it.

Must be pretty sad lives.

People that buy these iPhones DESERVE to pay these prices. If you're willing to shell out 2x the amount for a phone that will be readily available after the initial surge should buy me a Tesla and pay for a week's worth of "escorts".

I will actually be using mine next Friday. I don’t have the time or the energy to push and pedal something that will be old news in a month, plus that honest-consumer-ethics barrier I have...

Hustlers will be hustlers, I suppose.

Free market, baby. I don't get why scalpers get such a bad name. If it was such a concern to Apple, they would (and could) fix the issues, but all this buzz helps them.

Exactly. Scalpers assume risk of fraud, take a cash flow hit, and use their time to generate a profit. What is the big deal.

Sorry sir, we don't have any food for you and your family. That guy bought it up and is charging 2x the price for it.

That may seem silly but it actually happens with many products you buy every day. The prices are higher because of practices like this and you pay more because of it.

If we were talking about food, I'd agree with you. But we're talking about a luxury item that's in high demand where the supplier constrains early supplies for various reasons. And while phones have become a necessity, there are, of course, numerous other phones one could get on the cheap.

That literally makes no sense.
