It's funny that when Apple waits for the competition to do something first they are waiting to "perfect" the feature, but then if the competition waits for Apple to do something it's just a clone.

Having said that, please do not start cramming more cameras on the back of the phone just to add different zoom levels or focal lengths, this is the most ridiculous escalation of a superficial feature. If your CCD and software are good then you don't need separate physical cameras and lenses to achieve the same result.

If you want to do REAL photography, get a real camera, period, don't turn the phone into an unwieldy mechanism to take pictures because it has a dozen lenses on the back.

Throwing more hardware at us lol how about working on the software so all those "portrait effects" don't look like absolute trash.

I make photographs everyday with my iPhone and welcome "hardware," such as an additional lens, which provides more opportunities for making better photographs.

With respect to portrait effects...it sounds like you don't understand who Apple's audience is. And that's causal shooters who make photos of their friends and family and know next to nothing about making portraits nor having the lights, modifiers, etc to do so.

I you look on Huawei P20 pro pics and especially low light pics then I could understand if Apple would push 3rd lens forward to 2018 plus sized phone. It would differentiate it from small version in case it will have two lenses. And that is highly probable.

The iPhone is a real camera.

Wonder what the actual nomenclature will be for the 2018 iPhones. Lot of speculations seem to have made peace with the X plus moniker.

Nice picture.

To add to that, I would say that the human behind the camera is arguably more important than the camera itself. I am an awful photog, but can take a decent portrait shot with my X. I'm sure you should do 20x better.

Thats it folks. Timmy's idea on innovation is adding ANOTHER lens. Then in about 2 more years it will be Ooooh Four lenses. Cant innovate my a** is right.

Why are you so angry about what Apple chooses to do, making their phones better? I welcome any additions that helps make better photographs.

Better hardware improves depth of field detection, which should make the portrait effect look better.

Also, portraits are usually taken with a telephoto lens. Actually adding a third lens at somewhere bigger than 50mm equivalent can only help.

This is so wrong. No amount of software can compensate for missing focal lengths. They simulate field of view by cropping (and losing resolution) but do not give you the other benefits of increased focal length. And there is no CCD. These are cmos sensors.

I have many real cameras, but often times my kid is doing something cute and the only thing I have handy is my phone. The most popular cameras, by far, are smartphone cameras. The slr industry is being consumed. May as well make phone cameras as good as the physics allows.

Hi Tim. I will buy a phone like this (iPhone "Blinky") when Apple update the Mac mini you so love. It is a principal.

And at what point do you decide to just buy a basic smart phone and spend the remainder of the money on a professional DSLR camera. We're under no illusion that the new xPlus will cost about £1.2k

For many people, including serious photographers, it's OK having a DSLR and a phone camera. I rarely use my dSLRs when I'm out and about. The iPhone is perfect for that and for more serious endeavors as well.

For me only the camera improvements made me switch from iPhone 6S to a 7plus and then later to the iPhone X.
Most of the time I didn't really like the size of the 7plus but wanted the double lens camera. Was happy when the smaller X came out with double stabilized camera lenses. Hated the price but still bought it because of the camera.
Looking forward to a third lens and further improvements.
My Fuji and Canon cameras stay at home most of the time, but occasionally they are needed for certain types of pics.
On my last vacations I took 90% of the pictures with the iPhone and am totally happy with it...

True innovation would be to have 1 lense, flushed, not protruded, which can do what 3 lenses can do... but those days seem gone.

Hold on there, 1989. Most of us are not inclined to carry a DSLR on a strap around the neck while going out to meet friends. We depend on our iPhone cameras therefore.

Do you understand the limitations? And the compromises that would be incurred as a result?

We’re going back to the Plus-size getting exclusive features, shocker...

Yeah really wish they wouldn't do that, there shouldn't be any difference between the plus and its 5.8" model apart from the size. If they want to not include it then don't on the 6.1" model but don't penalise those who don't want the plus sized model but want the new features
