I make photographs everyday with my iPhone and welcome "hardware," such as an additional lens, which provides more opportunities for making better photographs.

With respect to portrait effects...it sounds like you don't understand who Apple's audience is. And that's causal shooters who make photos of their friends and family and know next to nothing about making portraits nor having the lights, modifiers, etc to do so.

I didn't say it was a bad camera...So im not sure what the point of that photo was... Their HEAVILY advertised portrait mode is absolute garbage. Google handily destyos the iPhone in that regards. The edge detection, or lack thereof is trash. Google has nailed this, Apple has not.

They could just figure out a way to make a zoom lens fit into that tiny space instead of using multiple prime lenses. But then again this is Tim's Apple we're talking about, not Steve's.
Apple’s not adding moving parts, which it turns out are far less reliable than solid-state components, to the iPhone.

Yeah really wish they wouldn't do that, there shouldn't be any difference between the plus and its 5.8" model apart from the size. If they want to not include it then don't on the 6.1" model but don't penalise those who don't want the plus sized model but want the new features

There's more volume in the plus, so more room for the third lens. If you want a third lens in the small phone, you have to give up something else (like battery). Everyone would complain either way.

A zoom lens would mean a bigger camera bump, would mean a smaller (and variable) aperture, would mean depth-sensing features are gone, and would require a much bigger (laterally) lens. Nothing is without its tradeoffs. There is a reason that prime lenses are generally better than zoom lenses (in terms of corner-to-corner sharpness, vignetting, and aperture speed) even when you are talking about dslrs or mirrorless cameras.

If you want to do REAL photography, get a real camera, period, don't turn the phone into an unwieldy mechanism to take pictures because it has a dozen lenses on the back.

My iPhone X is plenty "real" when it's the only camera I have on me. Also, they're talking about a third lens, not a twelfth. How does the third lens make the phone any more unwieldy than the two lens model?

And at what point do you decide to just buy a basic smart phone and spend the remainder of the money on a professional DSLR camera. We're under no illusion that the new xPlus will cost about £1.2k
I love a pro camera and own one, but I hate carrying it around.

I’m all for smartphones becoming better cameras because it’s convenient. Real time editing, stored on the cloud, small form factor, point and shoot, etc.

Actually, 2019 makes more sense given Apple will need something big like this for their notch-less iPhone 11 and 11 Plus models. The 10s and 10s Plus will only feature minor improvements to the current double-lens camera.

Kind of agree looking at iPhone 6 Plus > iPhone 6S Plus > iPhone 7

Wow, that pic is great! Thanks for sharing.

Throwing more hardware at us lol how about working on the software so all those "portrait effects" don't look like absolute trash.

No doubt they could be improved but I would not go as far as to say they are absolute trash. Perhaps either your choice of words are too harsh or that you may need to reevaluate the context in which you are using them.

We’re going back to the Plus-size getting exclusive features, shocker...

It is hard to believe when you have more volume to work with you can actually cram more things into it. Go figure!

No, not garbage. Again, try and understand who the intended audience is. It’s not for professional portraitists with years of experience, having lights and modifiers.

This fantastic CEO innovates by just upgrading the processor, the camera, and maybe the RAM once every 5 years.

Are we sure he didn't come from Microsoft or Android phones? Thats what Android did during Apples prime years and suffered in sales. Every 3 months they would send out a new phone with faster internal hardware..thats it. No one cared for it. What is this guy bringing software wise or hardware/cosmetic wise for anyone to say WOW can't wait to upgrade my iphone 6 plus.

Okay not even wow, just a simple oh nice thats new let me go take a look at it. He may be a nice guy, great guy, but he isn't the right guy for Apple when it comes to innovation and leading this company back up within 10 feet of where Apple once was under the GOAT...Jobs.

Wonder what the actual nomenclature will be for the 2018 iPhones. Lot of speculations seem to have made peace with the X plus moniker.

I Don’t know how closely you follow rumors, but the “Pro” moniker for the iPhone has been rumored for years and it’s never happened. Let me just say this, there is literally _nothing_ Pro about an iPhone. It’s main function is to make and receive calls, just like other smart phones. Apple will never use the word “Pro” attached to an iPhone.

The iPhone lineup will likely continue with the numbering scheme, which shows the older models superseded by the newer models with a higher number. It’s been crucial to the iPhone line up since it’s inception.

it's not smart business wise to do that...otherwise there are less reason to go for the more expensive model.
The paranoia around here.

Look, first of all, extra hardware ain't free, so including it in the smaller phone would likely raise the price.

Second, the bigger screen means more internal volume. This can either be used for battery, to increase capacity by, say 3%, or it can be used for a camera.
Or they can reduce the battery of the smaller phone by 7% (since it's smaller to start with, a given volume decrease has a bigger effect) to add the camera, and people would all bitch about that.

I use my phone for lots of pictures. As long as the lens improves photographs, I think it's a good idea.

He's not making an argument for portrait mode's audience.

Regarding your pic. What I see here is post processing. It has nothing to do with phone vs dSLR.

Clearly not. It does show he doesn’t understand who Apple’s audience for portrait mode is.

I never claimed my photo had anything to do with phone vs dslr.

STOP MAKING FEATURES EXCLUSIVE TO THE LARGER PHONES

STOP WANTING FEATURES THAT REQUIRE SPACE

I really don't understand why we continue to see this type of statement. Are they supposed to have a bigger screen with a small section of the phone behind it that is just hollow from where they only have the hardware available in a smaller profile? It is a nonsensical request that we see over and over.

With terms like "garbage" and "destroys" I think you have a future in writing click bait. If you truly have seen side-by-side comparisons of many of the photos with Apple's newest phone lineup and Google's, you would know that the differences are very minute. One phone is marginally better in one scenario whereas the other is marginally better in another.

If you review the following ( https://mashable.com/2017/11/09/app...note-8-portrait-mode-comparison/#FRkx8q9TJmqt ), you will see that the two are pretty close. Android is a little sharper but at the cost of darker color saturation. It is not lost on me that said article includes some of the same terms you used. Perhaps that is just a Gen X thing.

I didn't think I needed to clarify, but I suppose I do for you. When I said Google I was referring to the Pixel lineup of devices and their respective cameras. Go find me one review where the iPhone X or 8 wins over the Pixel 2.

I just wish they would make of the lenses wide-angle. I really don't need a zoom lens. A wide-angle lens has so many more uses.
