I do agree with OP. Regardless of whether one can afford to purchase it or not, the simple fact is that $999 for a base model mainstream phone is bordering ridiculous. This isn't a niche product, it's the latest model of one of the most popular phones in the world.

If it could justify its cost with materials e.g. if the phone was made of something valuable such as gold - then yes, completely justifiable pricing, but for years Apple sold their updated phones at close to or the same pricing as the predecessor.

But the fact is, that $999 phone is going to be 'out of date' in less than 10 months when Apple announce the 'XS' or whatever they call it.

Ridiculous pricing.

Fan boys will love it regardless "ooh, a new iPhone, I don't care how much it is take my money". But Apple are laughing at us, mark my words.

I don't know if anyone else is tired yet, but Apple finally updated the iPhone, but jacked up the prices.

It's a damn phone.

I cannot imagine any scenario in which into the store with 10 Benjamin's and walk out with an iPhone X.

After three generations of more of the same (iPhone 6, iPhone 6S, iPhone 7), Apple finally updated the iPhone, but jacked up the prices.

What makes it so much better than the previous iPhones that would warrant the price increases?

I have a solution for you: Don’t buy it.

Yes. One less person preordering

Great response!

Vote with you wallet. If it's not worth the price, don't buy. If enough people agree, it won't sell well and they'll have to rethink.

And, if that happens, we get less imagination, and investment in future products and devices. I personally don't mind the price. It would have been great if it was less money. But, how I think of it is I use the device everyday- less so as a phone and more so as a portable computer. I also use the camera all the time. Technology, research, advertising, innovation etc, unfortunately all cost money.

It was a double blackeye for me, a high price tag and the long wait hehe... i might not mind the price so much had it been available for preorder same as the iphone 8 since i am already set on getting the X... Or the other way around, have it delayed but price is somehow “justifiable” to sort of make the pain of waiting a little less hehe :) as it is even if u have made up your mind to pay such high price tag, and i have, the long wait than usual is like adding insult to injury, at least sort of :)

It's called "Paying for the research and development " for the X as so much obviously went into it. All of that costs money, that's the behind the scenes area we never see.

So why was that not included with other iPhone prices like the iPhone 4? That was a large jump in screen quality and form factor but did not see a large price increase? The point I am trying to make is that R&D costs have been built into every iPhones price since the original. Honestly, The X is not as revolutionary when you start to look at the rest of the industry and what they have done in the past year.

You can have them.

Apple made plenty of profit selling phones that are more of the same for the last three generations.

The company isn't exactly starving from lack of research money.

Your money, your choice……. And if it upsets you that others have a flashier phone, your problem.

Me? A $20.00 Nokia, which I bought about six years ago to replace a four year-old one that was ruined by a trip through a washing machine, is fine for my simple life. I seldom carry it anyway….. prefer be off-line when I leave my desk.

I have had just 4 mobile phones since I first bought one about 25 years ago. The first, also a Nokia, cost about $150.

I think you've mistaken me for someone else.

I am not the the the type that "gets upset" because "others have flashier phones".

I stick to my points. Innovation, depending of the product, requires money. Unfortunately, or fortunately, there are those out there who are willing to pay for new innovation (allowing others down the line to reap the rewards of good quality products). I used to be one who thought Apples prices were ridiculous, but, you get what you pay for. I had nothing but problems when I was using Android phones. Since switching, I've benefited from what I consider a superior operating system and a device that really was made for the general person.

I also grew up with windows, and hated Macs for the longest time. several years ago I decided to bit the bullet and spend extra on a Mac laptop. I'm glad I did as I now spend less time waiting on things and more time enjoying a machine that just works.

I don't write this as a defense. I just write this as my own experience. Sometimes people have to pay extra because the quality really does require it. I'm sure Apple was not thrilled to be charging $1000+ for the phone, but I am also sure that they realized in order for them to make a profit and also continue to make a quality product down the line, they needed to price it high.

It's hard to say this, but I"m happy with what I have. Apple taught me these latest and greatest will be nothing
but junk by 2 years. I could buy x easily. I'm counting my blessing and will take care of my priority over the phone first.
Although I have to upgrade my phone really soon, I'm not gonna let my x destroy my life or enslave me with "want."

These phones are WANT category, not need...at least IMO.

Note 8 have the best trade in for ip6 PLUS....300 dollars!! After reading the article about ipad pro price jacking up...due to flash drive price or whatever....yeah...they are crossing my line.

Forget it, man. There are people who are millennial buyers. Their mind is set.

You didn't response to my point.

You claim that if a lot of people decide to not buy iPhone X, Apple won't have money to "investment in future products and devices".

I said that this is not the case.

Then don't buy it.

I laugh when the term "gouging" is applied to these phones.

An iPhone is not essential to life.

People cough up $1500-2000 routinely for
MacBook Pro.

Apple than figures that price may be too much so released the better selling MacBook Air/MacBook

That's the same situation apple is creating with the iPhone 8/8 plus and the leftover iPhone 7/7plus/6s/plus/se

U are starting to see cell phone addicts like me routinely hang onto phones for 2 years now. I had owned every iPhone 2007-iPhone 6s Plus. My sister and brother even though they are working professionals making mid 6 figures. Even they are keeping phones close to 3 years. They feel no need to upgrade even at 2 years. Imagine the common person making an income $30-70k a year USD. $1000 is a lot to spend on a device. If they do spend it. Expect it to last them 3 years.

Apple has to pay for the OLED displays somehow. Samsung is the sole supplier.

And as most businesses operate, these costs are passed onto the consumer.

So apparently it wasn't just iPhones. Take a look st the iPad line up. The pros have had their second and third teir storage costs raised 50 dollars as well

Also, the problem is, and I'm sure for others, I used to get the second level iPhone (usually 32GB back then) for $299 by renewing the Verizon contract for 2 years. It allowed me to save $300-400 off the full Apple price of the phone. Since carriers have done away with the contract, I get no discount on a phone and have to pay full price or finance it with Verizon on payments raising the bill even higher. At least before, as a customer you felt rewarded somewhat--still paying for an expensive phone plan, but the discounted phone was like a discount for 2 years on the service. Now you don't get that. I can see why many people just go to a prepaid service since they have to buy the phone outright anyway now with ridiculously high prices.

Exactly. As soon as someone say something is priced too high. The response you get is if you can't afford it, then don't buy it. I see this a lot. Not just on this forum. For a lot of people it's not about affordability. I'm sure plenty of people could afford double/triple the amount, that doesn't mean they should or will buy it. My max for a phone is $1K and that is pushing it. I never thought I would spend $1K on a phone. That's my limit because to me it isn't worth more than $1K, not that I can't afford $1K. Especially for a phone that seems to be a beta.

A company that didn't exist a year ago (and may not exist next week) is selling a phone for $649, so yes, the best phone on the market from the best company in the world is easily worth $999. If you don't think so then DON'T BUY ONE. The rest of the world disagrees.

Laptops are different.

If you are making the next Spider-Man movie using Final Cut Pro, then a $2500 MacBook Pro is no big deal.
