It's called "Paying for the research and development " for the X as so much obviously went into it. All of that costs money, that's the behind the scenes area we never see.

So you think the spec-bumped Xs next year will start at $700 again? Or will it be $1K from now on?

I do agree with OP. Regardless of whether one can afford to purchase it or not, the simple fact is that $999 for a base model mainstream phone is bordering ridiculous. This isn't a niche product, it's the latest model of one of the most popular phones in the world.

If it could justify its cost with materials e.g. if the phone was made of something valuable such as gold - then yes, completely justifiable pricing, but for years Apple sold their updated phones at close to or the same pricing as the predecessor.

But the fact is, that $999 phone is going to be 'out of date' in less than 10 months when Apple announce the 'XS' or whatever they call it.

Ridiculous pricing.

Fan boys will love it regardless "ooh, a new iPhone, I don't care how much it is take my money". But Apple are laughing at us, mark my words.
That's why lot of these buyers who have no means to support themselves will be in debt.

You get what you pay for. And you know what? I'll bet this phone is so tasty, people would sell their children for one.

Apple makes nice stuff. What's "enough is enough", is their ability to top what they had before.

No one gets out with their wallets intact......sorry :(

We used to get what we paid for. Nowadays, between the quality control issues and equipment issues, getting what you paid for is not the same. At some point Ive had to replace my last three phones and two iPads for various non use issues, like yellow spots of the screen, or dead home button, or faulty battery. You are living in fantasy land.

I'm more upset about paying $1000 for a 64GB. 64GB! Should have start with 128GB.

Apple penny pinching strikes again!!

64 GB of memory is plenty for me. But I think for the price point Starting at $1000, it would have been nice to have at least 128 GB as a base to make it more appealing. Storage is an important decision when making a Phone purchase today, being how consuming photos, 4K video and applications are.

Apple products have always been priced as luxury items, this won't change in the near future. I agree that $1000 is a lot of money for a phone, but given all that they do nowadays and how feature packed they are, I don't think the price tag is unreasonable. It all comes down to how much you value the latest tech and what your budget is. No one is forcing you to buy the newest model, that's why they have great phones priced from $350-$1150. I have plenty of friends who have the iPhone SE and don't plan on upgrading any time soon because it's still a fast, speedy phone that does what they need. Just getting a little tired about hearing people complain about Apple's product pricing. If you can't afford a BMW M5, you get a 328. Still a great car, but less expensive. Same can be said about an iPhone X and an iPhone 7. Hopefully that analogy makes sense.

The cost of the iPhone X is no more then the 7+ 256 or 7+ 128gb its just slightly more per month. Its not that bad OP.

People have to remember this is the first iPhone launch (in USA ) where ALL consumers (besides very limited corporations with access to subsidized phones). So this is the first iPhone launch where even the grandfathered users (Verizon was last carriers to stop subsidized pricing for their grandfathered users in January 2017 of this year). Att had stopped subsidies in January 2016 for their grandfathered users. So real first time 99 percent of people essentially paying full price for iPhones.

And with very little promotion like $650 trade in credit like the past 2 years trading in 2 year old iphones ).

People are pissed. Shocked.

$1000 is a lot of money to the common person.

Only time will tell with iPhone sales.

No matter how the carriers spin it with installments pricing. Maybe they spread it over 36 months! To make it look cheaper. $1000 is still $1000.

And people are gonna to hang out to their iPhones longer and longer.

I used to upgrade from iPhone 2007 to iPhone 2015 (iphone 6s plus) every year. I can afford it. Money is no issue

I brought my wife the iPhone 7 plus last year.

But I'm just gonna to wait for a promo on the iPhone 8 plus come Thanksgiving time. Sam's club or Costco in the USA usually have $250-300 gift card deals. Sam's already had the $100 gift card for iPhone 8 plus at launch.

Be patient. Doubt iPhone x promo. But iPhone 8 plus promo will come.

Never pay full price for phones these days. Never. I sold my iPhone 6s plus already. Rocking my $120 (plus $25 best buy gift card ) lg g5 I got on a Slickdeals best buy promo back March 2017. That phone was $650 in 2016.

So bottom line. Wait for promo. They will come.

Totally. Correct on both. Early adopters will pay anything to get the latest and greatest. Personally no phone should really ever pass $900. Shouldn’t phones get cheaper as technology advances. I was looking forward to having more screen less body but it may be time to wait this one out. I’m on T-Mobile’s jump plan so I will jump to the 8plus. Same tech minus face id and oled. I love Apple products but I really couldn’t believe he spent about 10 mins on ****ing animojis.

Sorry to burst your bubble. There will be No Promos like last year the max carriers will give is 300 maybe 450 max, that it. Carriers lost a lot of money last year due to those promos and wall street hammered them for it and their stocks took a tumble so they won't do a promo again with 650 trade in not this year at least.

Let me start by saying the OP is right that the ipX is a lot of money.

Some are still planning to buy it anyway, some may feel like the OP and will say 'No', and some are sitting on the fence for a deal or to hear feedback before deciding.

The post that the ipX is a powerful computer, blah blah blah...and the post about paying for research...those were funny.

It's a damn phone.

Clearly, a smart phone is not the device for you then.

It's not just 'a damn phone'.

  • It's a super computer in your pocket that gives you access to any bit of data you want from anywhere in the planet right now.
  • It's a high-end camera for photos and videos. For normal stills, panoramic shots, slow-mo, and time-lapse.
  • It's a world-class viewer for photos/videos/and pretty much any type of electronic media you want.
  • It gives you access to virtually all music every created by man along with most movies and tv shows.
  • It's a high-resolution GPS device that lets you know where you are and how to get to anywhere you want to go. It'll even help with traffic and construction issues.
  • It's an instant messenger that makes it trivial to communicate instantly and with photos/videos/links/map locations/etc with anyone you want.
  • It's a calendar/scheduling device that can remind you when things are coming up soon, lets you easily look up and search through years worth of dates to instantly find the event you were looking for. You can even have shared calendars with whomever (family members, etc) to coordinate events, etc.
  • It's an alarm clock with however many times/tones/repeat-patterns as you want. Also a timer and a stopwatch.
  • It's a device that has access to any social media platform you want at a moment's notice.
  • It's a device that lets you video communicate with others in high resolution, using any of the multiple cameras it has.
  • It's a device with a never-ending catalogue of apps that utilize so many aspects of the device to do wonderful things (eg. simply by 'listening' to whatever music is playing in your location, it can identify the artist, song, album, provide lyrics and even let you get the song on your device ... all within seconds). This makes your device so many things. It's an astronomer's tool (SkyGuide), it can help you find restaurants you want, help you figure out your day in DisneyLand, use it as a VNC client to remotely log in and control your computers, etc. This bullet point alone could fill pages and is one of the most powerful aspects of something like an iPhone.
  • It's a device that is a pretty kick-ass fitness tracker. This coupled with the previous bullet-point and the advent of nutrition/health/etc trackers lets you keep track of and easily manage all manner of fitness oriented goals.
  • It's a banking device, letting you quickly and easily manage finances/payments/etc.
  • ApplePay
  • It has enough horsepower to run AR apps to let you see the world with new and useful data overlaid on top of it.
  • It's a device that lets you stream just about anything from the internet and onto your other devices (eg. your tv via AppleTV)
  • It's a device that integrates and syncs up with all your other Apple devices (desktop, iPad, watch, etc) so that everything you do, you can do on whichever device you want, whenever you want, and it's all there.
  • It's a device that can be voice controlled and talk back to you.
  • It's a device that you can use to almost instantly translate from one language to another, totally by voice if you'd like.
  • It has a super high resolution display, bluetooth connection to whatever headphones/audio-devices you want, and world-class biometric security. Oh, and a flashlight.
  • Tons more.

... and it fits in your pocket.

These are just some of the things I use my iPhone for. It is not just 'a damn phone'. It's so far from being just 'a damn phone' that the term iPhone is really a misnomer these days. Indeed, I think the definition of the word 'phone' is going to change over time to incorporate the monumental number of things these devices can do.

So, really, if all you want is a phone, yeah, there are many options out there that are waaaaaay cheaper than a marquee smart phone to make phone calls with.

Phones are unfortunately going towards the more expensive end due to carrier installment plans and plans like the iPhone upgrade program. I have no desire to have a company constantly in my pockets for hardware. It is bad enough that I have do deal with that on the software end. $999 is simply too expensive for a phone that will be obsolete in a year.

Pretty sure both the 8 and the x won’t be close to obsolete in a year.

The carriers are not giving the $650 trade in promo directly. That's why I sold my iPhone 6s plus myself.

But third parties like best buy target Sam's club Costco will have their own promo in terms of gift cards.

Like I said Sam's had $100 gift card plus $20 off apple Care for iPhone 8/plus already.

Be patient. The gift card promo will get bigger next month. That's why I'm not in a hurry

I figured out the installment game. Wait for promo. Like people got $300 gift card from Target and Sam's club throughout the year for iPhone 7. Which effectively made the phone (msrp $649/769 base). Basically made it effectively $300 off cause 90 percent of people treat target gift cards to buy essential items.

So for me. That makes the phone $349/469 with the give card. And anyone can resell their jphone 7 for $349/469 easily after one year of use.

That's how u got to do the installement game. I pay it off in full after one month anyways to be eligible for another deal.

A phone is not like a car.

I am not going to be making monthly payments on it.
Me either, but loads of people do make those payments. To me the installment plan is for houses, cars and maybe an important appliance or two if need be but not a fricking cell phone. To many cheaper options that also work.
