STEVE JOBS WOULD NEVER HAVE LET THIS HAPPEN. this is just hideous
Still keeping my fingers crossed that will be a feature. Would be awesome if you could toggle on and off the seamless status bar. People who want to embrace the "ears" can, while people who would prefer the more seamless look have that option as well.Actually, we'd prefer it if the software made this nice hardware more seamless by putting a black bar beneath the status bar icons. It's quite simple and in no way mad.
What model is that?Do I like the way it look? No. But it absolutely make sense to design it with a notch like that if you want to maximize every bit of screen for use. Next step is to actually place the speaker behind the screen like that new Sony oled TV.
Although I agree, Steve Jobs was notoriously conservative when it came to that stuff. So he probably wouldn't have let it happen. With that said, we'd probably also still be using 4 inch iPhones if he were around. These types of posts always baffle me. Somebody portraying they can speak for Steve Jobs and fully understand his mindset of what exactly? Nobody here can speak for what Steve Jobs would have done or could have done in today's world of technology with the iPhone. Nobody.

This has confirmed that I don't want the iPhone 8, I can't ignore the notch. The UI elements look so out of place
I have a hard time believing Jony Ive could have thought that the notch looks beautiful, especially for an anniversary edition iPhone and how Federighi could have thought it looks great in terms of the UI side.
Edit: If I see Ive explaining his notch inspiration at the keynote, I think I might actually puke.

I agree with the sentiment, but there is no doubt Steve Jobs would be displeased with the product line fragmentation Apple has now. These types of posts always baffle me. I am currently using an S8 and although Samsung claims it's an edge to edge display, it's really not. When you're in an app, there's a lot to wasted space and having to crop videos to fit the screen is kinda annoying. I'm excited for a true edge to edge display with the X!
Very true, he was extremely unpredictable. He was also very sensible, so for all we know he could have been on the "this is the best way to utilize every mm of the phone" boat. You make interesting points. But I think what I find interesting about Steve Jobs, he was so unpredictable even when we thought we had him figured out.
This is controversial but I prefer the left mockup one where the "ear" shows. I know it's ugly and I don't think it even looks better, but something about trying to hide it seems wrong to me. Hiding it is like "look you can hardly see it, see it's not a big deal". It's admitting they don't really want it to be there but had to stick it there. The notch exists so may as well just suck it up and be confident in the design.![]()
Here's the real deal: the notch/ears look horrible on a white background, but pretty sick actually on a black background that blends with the bezel. This is why Apple is rumored to only be releasing the iPh X with a black bezel, and the status bar will certainly look like it does on the right NOT on the left!

Steve was all about practicality, and hated bs gimmicks. He was a hard ass, but also had very distinct visions. He would push his employees so hard that they were forced to innovate to meet his goals. Without him, there's less of a force pushing new innovation. That's what I think is the biggest complaint when it comes to Steve Jobs not running the helm anymore.
There's a lot of bezel. A true bezel - less would be one that only the screen and your finger would be visible. No metal nor plastic or any other material other than the screen and your skin. That's a bezel less. Wonder what people will think of us calling it like this in 10 years when they get true bezel less screens.I'm not sure that the X is a true edge-to-edge? I believe there is still some bezel

The carrier name for me has been useful when it changes between "Verizon" and "VZW WiFi". I believe I've heard that in some countries (e.g. in Europe), folks may roam from their "home" carrier frequently. Apple probably knows what they're doing, but it'll be interesting to see.Goodbye carrier name! Finally. As if I constantly need to be told what network I’m on… What a waste of space.
