Well the essential phone already has it, apple apparently liked that very much.
Well rickjames signature indicates they are a Samsung die-hard, so I wanted to make them aware Samsung might be headed in the same direction.

Steve also wouldn’t have allowed a screen over 4”. Or the AirPods. Or the Apple Pencil. Or the...

actually the AirPods and the Apple Pencil he might have allowed. He never spoke against wireless headphones or an optional stylus. He just thought that where the tech was at the point was crap. especially for the stylus. He also didn't like them being mandatory for operating devices

LOL at the justification. If this was a no-name Chinese knockoff you guys would be raking it over the coals. It looks terrible.

The mental gymnastics in this thread are quite amazing. All the Apple bloggers gave Motorola **** when their 360 watch had a "flat tire" sensor area on it. But Apple's put an equivalent notch on their phone and suddenly it's a design award winner.

If it quacks like a duck, it must be a duck. If it looks stupid, silly, and distracting then it's stupid, silly, and distracting.

And yet Samsung has all this spare phone OLED capacity to sell to Apple because so few people buy their high-end phones.

No. Samsung spent $9 billion increasing capacity in six factories seven-fold, and converting an LCD factory to OLED.

Which, along with lowered yields from the notch cut, is no doubt why Apple is reportedly having to pay so much for each display.

Mind you, I think the notch is a good idea as long as its background matches the bezel... and it doesn't actually raise the price by $100 or more. It's not worth anywhere close to that much.

Are we talking about the same thing here? I'm talking about the area to the left and right of the sensors - there's a screen there. There's no screen to the left or right of the sensors on a Galaxy S8. There's just black, i.e. wasted space

That's a very small amount of vertical space.

Especially as compared to the much larger wasted front space on either side of the Home button section of iPhones for the past ten years.

25,000,000 in what time period?

That's the estimate of shipped units (so not actually all of them are sales to consumers) between late April and late August from market research firm Strategy Analytics (so that may not be completely accurate) - so four months.

So we're looking about 275,000 units shipped per day.

About what I expect the Phone X will pre-order in it's first half-hour if the Apple Store doesn't implode under the load. :p

All this is great but I am still concerned about burn-in with static icons always shown in "ears".

I don’t see what the big deal about the notch is. It adds character and it’s better than having a black bezel across the entire top. It allows the screen to cover the entire top to bottom front side of the device, and it doesn’t bother me having it there. I am getting sick of these leaks though. Want to save the surprises for Tuesday. Guess I need to stop checking the site.

Disappointed all this is coming out - all this stuff would have great live on stage - off course, I could shut off my internet connection but this is fun to see as well :p

They should be no more "static" than what we have now in the status bar area on the current phone. So unless you keep your phone's display on 24x7...

There is nothing that looks dated on the S8 or Note 8. This sounds like a whako trying to force himself to appreciate Apples hideous design. The screen still does not have more useable space no matter how you try to spin it. That notch takes exactly the same amount of space or more than not having the ugly notch. How can you criticize samsungs design when you have a horrendous vertical camera bump, 2 bunny ears, and bezels on ALL sides with a ugly notch for goodness sake.

P.S. there is no such thing as a full screen "mode" on the recent Samsung devices...we have easy DIRECT full utilization of our screen...no mode to place it in for this
Take it easy man, breath.... there is no enemy, just a Don Quichote on an Apple forum. There is treatment for you, go find some help to get through this difficult period in your life. It is OK bashing on a forum with other grown-ups, but some grew more than others. I am sure with some coaching you could actually have a normal conversation about a freakin’ phone that is not even announced.

So Timmy Cook's got my fingerprint, now wants my face? I think I'll pass on this one.

You can always keep using a passcode. Might be better if you want to keep your data to yourself since the police cannot compel you to unlock your phone with a passcode while they can with a fingerprint (TouchID) and I expect facial recognition will also be considered the same as a fingerprint.

Here's the real deal: the notch/ears look horrible on a white background, but pretty sick actually on a black background that blends with the bezel. This is why Apple is rumored to only be releasing the iPh X with a black bezel, and the status bar will certainly look like it does on the right NOT on the left!

The difference is that OLED gets burn-in while LCD does not.

Well pay attention to the real world every so often and it won't be a concern lol
Huh? How does this prevent OLED burn-in?

It is the real deal. How can you deny it?
This is absolutely brilliant design, so let's hope it is the real thing
I'm not sure you understood what exactly I'm calling a bad design here... I'm referring to the the fact that they have it blend in with the background instead of keeping it a solid black background so the pieces of screen real estate on either side blend in with the camera/sensor notch...

You're fine. They don't store your fingerprint; just a mathematical hash that can't be reversed into your actual fingerprint. Check the first paragraph under Secure Enclave from Apple's support document here: https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT204587

I would imagine it will be the same with your face. 3D face scan will generate more data points to produce a hash.

This, on the right, is exactly what I'm talking about and would much prefer. If we end up with the left hand version, I may just hang on to my 7 Plus, or even go back to an SE (so I can get a headphone jack back again). But the leaks are making it look like we're closer to the left version than the right :/

Agreed, if we end up with an 'on the right' scenario then I'm in. There's no chance I'm buying that monstrosity on the left though. I'll keep my iPh 7+. Funny how just a few bars of color can make such a difference to the aesthetic of the device.

You could buy an SE or snag a refurbished 6S+ on eBay for that headphone jack. The last 'true' iPhone haha.

Exactly! The "on the left" with the notch is a friggin eyesore. I've been a Mac user for 15 years (not long in the grand scheme, I know), and I can't begin to make apologies for this dreadful design.
