Rather than doing the authentication right at the same moment as purchase, you can pre-authenticate and once the reader is ready the purchase happens through your phone. With TouchID, if it didnt work for any reason this just took longer and held up lines.
Uhm, you can "pre authenticate" with Touch ID too in pretty much the same way (just using the home- instead of the side-button). But you also have the option to simply hold the phone to the reader without doing anything, which is what I do 99% of the time.

You could preauthenticate TouchID with your fingerprint as well.

I used Face ID for Apple Pay the other day, worked fine. No complaints. My main problem is remembering I have the option of Apple Pay, and what stores take it.
My problem as well. I forgot I have it mainly because it doesn't work with all of my credit cards so it's easier to have just made it a habit going for my physical wallet instead.

Pre-authenticate then double click the button. Of course if you have an Apple Watch there’s no need to use the phone.

Same here. I have never asked to use ApplePay specifically. I just ask to use the "Contactless"… never fails.

I was on vacation in Stockholm and Helsinki the week that ApplePay went live there. Both Sweden and Finland have used contactless for years and almost every place I went was equipped with the NFC readers. I quickly learned to not ask about ApplePay...since it was so new, they hadn't really heard of it. When I did ask I even had a few say they didn't take it. But if I said "contactless" they knew exactly what to do on the register and were surprised to see me use my phone (and especially amazed if I used my watch).

They have had the opposite problem as we have in the States. All of their retailers are "contactless" ready, but until recently none of their banks allowed cards to be loaded into ApplePay. Here almost every bank lets us load our cards, but not enough places accept it. Although I have seen more and more places coming on board in the last few months.

Been a fan of ApplePay since its inception both on the iPhone as well as the Apple Watch. Used it so much on the iPhone that I got use to double tapping the Home and authenticating all while pulling it out my pocket. But with the X theres now that momentary pause for it to authenticate with FaceID. My fear if as iOS matures to more CPU intensive versions, there may be even a slower authentication process. But too early to tell for me to say if its more inconvenient just initially awkward for now.

While I don't use Apple Pay much, due to it not being available in the two stores I shop at most(Publix/Walmart), I did use it this morning at Walgreens with Face Id for the first time. Had no issues with phone process. Only had to wait for the cashier to get to the point of using the NFC reader for some reason. Very easy and maybe easier than touch Id.

Exactly my experience… asking for ApplePay just confuses people. :)

I guess I will find out on my next trip to the US o A.

All in all, Apple Pay on iPhone X is essentially as quick and as easy to use Touch ID once you get used to how it works, but it will take a few payments to become accustomed to the new process if you're used to the Home button.

I’m probably being a little picky, but doesn’t this sound like you’re making an excuse for Apple?

I had the same thought when I read it…

Once your phone has recognised your face or fingerprint, it’s authenticated. Pre-authentication is just thinking about doing it.
Dear heart, feel free to call it whatever you like.
Pre-authentication works for some of us.

I gave up on Apple Pay all together because stores either never activated the nfc or the employees were clueless how it worked.

Any debit/credit reader that has NFC capabilities should allow you to use it whether the cashiers know what's going on or not. I don't even bother to ask if I can use Apple pay. If I see the NFC logo on the reader, I just tell the cashier that I'm paying by debit, and then I use my phone. Most aren't surprised anymore but when Apple Pay was first introduced here in Canada I got more than a few "How did you do that?" reactions from cashiers.

You can do it the exact same way with TouchID. Double tapping the home button at the lock screen brings up the card selection the same way. You can then pre-authenticate by leaving your finger on the home button, then place the phone near the reader and done.

Or you can just pull your phone out of your pocket, bring it near the reader, place your thumb on TouchID and you're all done in one sweeping motion. It might not be that bad, but for those of us that use TouchID this way, FaceID it is an extra step or two.

For me, using the X has meant learning to not holding my phone next to the reader to initiate the Apple Pay process. If you do, it adds an extra step. As others have said, if you pre-authenticate first, it is much soother and can be done before hand, which I think is much more helpful.
