I’m glad I will have the opportunity to travel to the US at the end of the year and buy an Iphone there. Brazil is a nice country with lots of things to do and see, nice people and all, but when it comes to buying foreign products Its just absurd....

I know that, but the point and the irony is: Apple and Tim Cook tells everyone that their products "aren't just for the rich" and "the fault is on Brazil taxes". But it's way beyond that. They can do different, they just don't want it (like you've said). But they also don't assume that. And, at the end, we pay twice the price to get the half of the experience. That's just sad.

You have universal healthcare. I will be paying $2000 per month for medical insurance premiums every month in 2018, and my deductible will be $10,000, which means that I will pay $34,000 in 2018 before the insurance company will pay the first cent for the medical coverage. So, stop complaining.

Oh yeah, sure, because our universal healthcare it's awesome! That's exactly why I'm glad to pay U$2000 on a phone.

Dear Complainants,

The United States is home to the world’s most advanced and awesome consumer technology companies. If you want a piece of our pie, pay up, start a movement against tyrannical or unfair governments and their duty laws, or move here.

Otherwise, go buy a Samsung or a lower cost iPhone. I noticed somebody tried to state minimum wages would take 8 months to save up in Brasil for the iPhone X. If you have no skillsets and education with a job that can support your habits, chances are you don’t need a flagship device, and if you get one, your priorities are majorly askew.

Always remember, never buy anything you can’t afford in cash. Payments allow you to keep your capital, and should not be a crutch to scrape by like a $30k/year “millionaire,” or should I say, “financial poser.”

Sincerely,

Somebody who is tired of hearing folks complain about what they don’t have or can’t get, because they’re clearly doing something wrong in life if happiness only lies underneath a freaking phone.

IF... if we have good services, maybe we will not complain about it. That's not the case.

So the Brazilian government punishes their people for buying foreign products by charging a 60% import tax and somehow it's Apple's fault?

Having worked with a number of folks from Brazil they educated me on this.
It’s absolutely crazy

It comes from Apple's insanity. Set higher prices to the iPhone X, turn it into a luxury product and also forces the iPhone 8 for everyone here, so they can tell the world that both phones are "selling well". That's the only reasonable explanation. Again, it's not only about Brazil taxes.

Yep, only reasonable explanation. /s
Amazingly uninformed comments on here.

Which lower cost iPhone, you mean? iPhone SE costs R$2000, which should be $620. The minimum wage is R$937 ($290). And if you think "That's because just a few people earn the minimum wage, so they don't care". Nop. 60% of people earn the minimum wage. 23% earn less than the minimum wage.

PS: iPhone SE is made on Brazil. So this 60% import taxes BS doesn't apply.

You certainly know nothing about Brazil, mate...

Cause 60% of $1000 is $600.

So...... where is the other $500 ? :)

In the U.K. , taking taxes and exchange rate , Apple is setting a higher price... so yeah... apple is guilty of profiting .

Shhh.... Don't let's simple maths get in the way of blaming the Brazilian government ...

Thank you. That explains it, did not realise sales tax was that much

you guys really need to educate yourselves about all the facts involved before you start spouting off.

Isn’t that only $1,600 though? Where does the other $500 come from?

Welcome to the math genius club!

Actually the formula is price/(1-tax rate) which equals $2500. As proof, $2500 * .6 = $1500. $2500 - 1500 = $1000

QED.

Truly, the Samsung phone is also charged the same tax. Don't you have to buy a local phone to avoid the tax?

BTW:

Actually the formula is price/(1-tax rate) which equals $2500. As proof, $2500 * .6 = $1500. $2500 - 1500 = $1000

And Samsung's "equivalent" phone is $929 isn't it? before upgrades.

Sounds like you need a job with health benefits, a good group plan, or move to a state that implemented the ACA well (before Trump screwed it up further)

Someone else mentioned that Samsung has a plant in Brazil. This exempt from the 60% import tariff.

That is why so many companies are building manufacturing plants in Brazil and other Latin American countries. To get around the insane import tariffs.

Let's put some numbers in perspective:

iPhone 8 64 GB:
Brazil: R$ 3999 (US$ 1241) / US: US$ 699
iPhone 8 256 GB:
Brazil: R$ 4799 (US$ 1490) / US: US$ 849
iPhone 8 Plus 64 GB:
Brazil: R$ 4599 (US$ 1427) / US: US$ 799
iPhone 8 Plus 256 GB:
Brazil: R$ 5399 (US$ 1676) / US: US$ 949

Nice, we've got some numbers. If we divide (price in R$)/(price in US$), we have an average of aproximately R$ 5,71 = US$ 1. Now, let's put some iPhone X numbers.

iPhone X 64 GB:
Brazil: R$ 6999 (US$ 2172) / US: US$ 999
iPhone X 256 GB:
Brazil: R$ 7799 (US$ 2421) / US: US$ 1149

Doing the same math again, we have aproximately R$ 7 = US$ 1.
That's the craziness we're discussing. There is simply no logic in these prices. Why use a different rate for the iPhone 8 and the iPhone X?
Taxes? Yes, they have their weight on it, but there's certainly more than just that.

So just show that even iPhones actually made in Brazil, could be a little cheaper at least.

Moto Z2 64GB, the price in the US is $550 . On Brazil, it costs R$1500.
Lenovo Vibe K6, on US is $315, on Brazil, it costs R$999.
Meanwhile, iPhone SE 32gb on US is $350, on Brazil, it costs R$2000.

I’m glad I don’t live in Brazil then. Good grief those are some high import taxes.

Funny enough, in Brazil, both right wing and left wing are protectionists, it began way back in the military dictatorship. Nowadays, there's a full out neo-liberal government in place that will sell basically any government owned company, even the very profitable ones, but won't touch this insane import tax because the few private industries that there are in Brazil, like american and european car factories, all rely on this to build cars here. Foxconn used to have a factory here, the only one outside of China at the time so it looks like there's some return from this line of thinking but the reality is that they only assemble products here, not really build them.

For me, that has been working with tech for decades, it has been always a nightmare. I sweat on the prospect of a relative traveling to US, just because I feel obliged to buy something for my work. It's crazy. I remember when I was a kid, we would have to smuggle a C64 or Amiga because we weren't not even allowed to import them.

Having said that, Brazil has a very impressive and invigorating tech sector that learned to circumvent those limits with creativity and passion. That's why we have a web and physical apple store here unlike the rest of South America. One day, maybe, we will have a government that will listen to us and actually stopping harming the technology development and we will flourish.

Sounds like $620 USD is a lot cheaper than $2100 USD.

And that’s fine that it’s made (cough, assembled) in Brazil. Why would a profit driven company that pleases their shareholders (ahem... wink-wink) take that hit? Apple clearly makes more money off of the rich minority than the millions of lesser-income individuals.

Target market!

I should have emphasised on the Samsung bit. I didn’t mean to imply their flagships. They do indeed make burner smartphones. :p

They should just make a $100,000 iPhone and see if anyone buys it.

They can reintroduce the headphone jack as it’s revolutionary feature.
