About the removal of 3D Touch - in the car industry, when high tech features debut in the flagship models, they eventually trickle down to the economy models. Once they do they become permanent value additions that benefit all future consumers.

Dropping functionality that many have grown accustomed to and is useful (despite the spin that people rarely use it), just smacks of anti-consumer behavior. The iPhone 8 that launched at $700 has 3D Touch; no reason why a phone that costs $50 more at launch shouldn’t have it.
If few people do use force touch, and considering that the Taptic Engine does take up a significant amount of space in the phone (space which could be used for say, a larger battery), a case could be made for leaving it out if it is indeed proving that unpopular.

Yes, they’re significantly wider on the XR, compared to the XS. Enough to lose the “edge-to-edge” illusion, if you ask me. Others won’t care.

There was a leak over the summer of the three front covers, and it was plain to see. Really, the bezels aren’t much smaller than the side bezels of the 6s/7/8.
On that picture the Xr side bezels look noticeably thicker than the 6s/7/8 series phones.

The black one looks actually pretty great. Reminds me of the jet black 7. I loved that color. Looked way better than my space gray X.

And stop comparing it to android prices. Android price is from no support, no security patches (or best 2 years), and loss of privacy so they can make money off from selling you a cheap phone.

I buy iPhone and suck it up for the price for the above reasons, then just keep the phone for 3 years so its not as huge investment in cash.

In addition to hands-on time with the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max, members of the media today got the chance to see the new LCD iPhone XR up close. This is Apple's cheaper alternative to the higher-tier XS models, with the XR starting at $749 in 64GB and rising from there.

iphone-xr-hands-on.jpg

In person, The Verge said that the six new colors of the iPhone XR are all very vibrant, and the site particularly liked Coral and (PRODUCT)Red. Additionally, The Verge described the iPhone XR as noticeably lighter in comparison to the XS, and ultimately said that the XR will likely become the "default" iPhone for many users this holiday season.
In terms of downgrades from the iPhone XS to make the XR cheaper, Apple went for an LCD display instead of OLED, chose a single-lens rear facing camera instead of the dual lens on the XS, and removed 3D Touch. TechCrunch, like many outlets, said that if you don't miss these features then it's easy to see why the XR will be enticing, particularly if you want more color options.

Other than those differences, the iPhone XR has an A12 Bionic chip, a TrueDepth camera system, and Face ID -- just like the iPhone XS.
Mashable reported that the rear camera on the iPhone XR is still impressive, despite the fact that it's not a true Portrait Mode effect like those produced by the dual cameras on iPhone XS or XS Max.
The iPhone XR will go up for pre-order this Friday, October 19, ahead of a launch one week later on October 26.

Interesting that sim free versions are not available at launch for the XR models but are available for the XS models. Anyone know why?

They do look rather large, it could be that the sides are indeed larger than previous LCD models.

Apple wants a uniform bezel all the way around. So the overall minimum bezel width depends on the edge with the connection to the display controller board, probably at the bottom as usual, being as small as possible. It looks like they weren’t able to make that area small enough to pull off the minimal bezel look that I’m sure they would have preferred.

In the OLED models, they fold the display back on itself to move this critical area away from the bottom edge. No other manufacturer has been able to duplicate that, and as a result haven’t been able to minimize the bottom bezel to the same extent as Apple.

I really don't see the value in the XR. If I needed to purchase an iPhone right now, and if I was not going to buy an XS (Max), I would opt for the iPhone 8. The 8 includes 3D Touch (if that is your thing) and offers more bang for the buck than the 7 which it drastically outperforms. The only reason to go with an XR is if someone really wants the lowest cost iPhone with FaceID, but it just doesn't appeal to me.

The question is: would you buy this or the iPhone X?

i went out and bought a nice clean used IP X with 256gb for 1/2 of its original price.

they should have made it a dual lenses and it would sale a lot more for under $1k phone.

Removed 3D Touch in a $750 phone? Apple, if you're going to bend your customers over at least buy them flowers first.

to Mitchel Broussard, in comparison to the more expensive models...how short Apple's memory is, did they not learn anything from the outrage over the $1k X?

Timmy may send u flowers, but I'll bet come 2019 we'll be treated to more of the same absurd pricing & the faitfull will bend over and accept Team Apple's gangbang and scream out Yes, Yes, more, more!

At some point, all these high-end models, including inferior Hauwei are going to price themselves out of the market. 2019 the lowest ip is going to bump the price up, 2010,up again, so from the ip6 to just 4yrs later we have, and then 2023> standard ip going for $1500...with sales coming up flat in terms of #'s, I don' think they can maintain this price growth...Apple's stock will decline by 'made in China 2025' (where ironically ip's will likely continue to be assembled..mostly by Foxconn bots, replacing low-wage workers...who will be unemployable)...tis ok, Chinese gov can just either send them to re-education farms/detention, or by then California's new Dem gov will have full open borders with free health care, free everything...California, where lib Silicon Val billionaires live...it is utopia, didn't u know? (sorry, don't let the political parts of this post degrade the thread).

Like others, I will either get a refurb/used a few yrs down the line to replace my 6 series, even after replacing battery @79% where it should have been throttled, & thanks to Apple's horrible service/stores, went to best buy for the $29 replacement...noticed zero diff, and not expecting much from ios 12, as seems not much mention of earlier claims by Apple it's going to speed up the 6+.

64 GB is more than enough for the vast majority of people.

Especially if you mostly stream your movies and music.

How much p0rn can you possibly pack a phone with?"

^speak 4 urself buddy, I've got more than that on my MBP with 256GB, and it's not v many @Low res, 4k will fill up everything. with 5g celluar coming nxt year(who would buy a ip now, when Droids & most us carriers are going to roll out 5g in major cities by end of nxt yr?), 8k pr0n will follow, no amount of compression will save enough space 4 that.

service tech mentioned vast majority of ip's are full of data, do not offload to the icloud or other.

over on Dpreview, similar comments, but being camera centric, 1 poster mentioned the BlackmagicPPC 4k, that's $1300 w/o real 'pro' (not Apple fake 'pro')zoom or prime lens + and older ip7 was all they needed. Seriously the BMPPC 4k does real-deal high-end 4k with 12bit super real *usable* dynamic range, as layperson/technical explanation given by onerivermedia.

http://www.onerivermedia.com/blog/comparing-the-blackmagic-design-cinema-camera-part-2/

^This shows the huge advantage, in post, u get with 12bit raw 'useable dynamic range'...circa 2012, b4 the ip6 was introduced. Can't be that on any ip, or andriod, now and likely for the next 5yrs at least.

and of course, the massively lib leaning fanboyz on Appleinsider are going their usual nuts over every release of anything Apple.

With Apple's billions in R&D, expect the made in 2025 Chinese crowd to surpass and give us something like the results of AI using multiple Nvidia Tesla v100 cards/ workstation ...surely need this for the very tiny sensors in all smartphones.

rather than an animoji/gameboy centered market/specialty model, I would like a much thicker...ip5 SE was not cheap, what about a 5c for India(& us poor folk in the USA?) that has enough battery power & has a 'real' zoom capability, not digital, full IOS optical breakthrough?

http://nepalwap.com/oppo-5x-zoom-dual-camera-with-periscopic-lens-at-mwc-2017.html
^this is using Casio patent(or 'acquired' as the Chinese ip theives are wont to do) internal/non-protruding lens

I would think the only reason these smart-phone camera's are any good is not the senor, its the software which does it's 'magic' afterwards..

Although the lens helps, most of the better photos are from software re-touches, not hardware.

Not fake, but i still much prefer a DSLR for true picture taking.. However, most of the stuff Apple has done couldn't even BE done without software and cheaper price tag.

Perhaps I just prefer the real things.

And those that can’t afford (or don’t want to spend) the XS have the 7 at $449.

Apple's system of selling an old phone is just stupid. Android phone makers do sell older phones for up to a year, but more often, they have lower end models that are refreshed every year. With Apple's system, the 7 doesn't have any of the new LTE bands, whereas AT&T is launching new Android phones with B14 that are $$250 or less.

iPhone 8 = $700 | bezels | 3D Touch
iPhone XR = $750 | edge-to-edge | Haptic Touch
iPhone X = $1.150 | edge-to-edge | 3D Touch

Price, Bezels and Touch. Pick two out of three! No phone has them all.

You’re paying less for an inferior product. Not sure why you’d berate people who don’t mind paying premium prices for premium products

US$750 for a bloody phone? What kind of stuff do they smoke at Apple? I don't know about you folks, but when it's time to upgrade my current iphone 6, my next "iphone" will be an android worth not more than US$300 or $400. For now, I'll just get a new battery and continue not having emoji, animoji, memoji and whatever other "carp" there is.

But is it really an inferior product? Is a Black Friday sale on a Galaxy S9 really an inferior product? Or a OnePlus 6T? Or another Android device?

Absolutely

I don't think that's the case. Even if the iPhone could somehow get reception as good as the S9, which is highly unlikely given both the RF issues and the Intel modems, the overall package is rather similar for most people, and the Samsung has a slight edge for some.

Apple's main selling point seems to be for people who have let themselves get sucked into Apple's services like iMessage, iCloud, etc. I'm smart about those, and when I had an iPhone, and with my iPad, I keep most of that stuff disabled, and use only platform neutral third-party services. I do the same on Mac and Windows, so that I'm not invested in any proprietary ecosystem. The one thing that I have that is tied into an ecosystem is a magazine subscription on the iPad. Beyond that, it's a toss-up, and Apple's pricing has put them at a disadvantage.

this page says iPhone xr will only support 3/5 photo lighting modes on the front camera: https://www.apple.com/uk/iphone/compare/

this video shows iPhone xr supporting all five photo lighting modes on the front camera (at 1:36):

this looks like proof apple plans to disable the modes through software and deny their use to XR customers - there is no hardware impediment to the camera modes running on the xr

thoughts?
