I once dropped my SE into a fish tank. I got it out in about a second, but considering it's not water resistant at all and it's still working... I'd assume a phone with any sort of waterproofing would be OK as long as the phone isn't directly in the stream. So maybe a bath would be a better idea?

I usually have my phone on the bathroom counter while I'm showering, and I haven't noticed any issues doing that. Again, it's an SE, so I would imagine an X/R/11 would be just fine as well.

Why not? It's advertised as water resistant.
Water resistant and water proof are different things. Resistance might decrease as a result of normal wear as well. That's in addition to steam also being involved when it comes to showers.

I shot videos going through waterfalls at Iguacu Falls Brazil with the 2016 iPhone model and there was no problem. But probably not the best idea ...

The SIM tray is reportedly a weak link, so I put a piece of 1 mil DuPont Kapton tape over it just as extra insurance. I also have a soft plastic dust plug in the Lightning port as I use wireless charging most of the time.

You can take it into the shower for sure. Long term I'm sure the results are varied but I've had no issues taking my rated devices into saunas, showers, hot tubs, underwater privacy bubbles, or anything else water related and they've been perfectly fine so long as I'm not blasting it with the water streams. I've even had to have several devices repaired for issues and haven't once had any with a tripped moisture sensor.
What is an underwater privacy bubble, and where can I find one? It sounds pleasant.
