Unbelievable these people cannot wait to save a little more money and buy Apples Xs.

A little more money? Try its $250 more for the iPhone XS base storage model. That is a fairly significant difference, considering that the consumer still want the similar form factor as the iPhone XS with Face ID, yet they still are receiving a solid device with some of the same features as the XS with wireless charging, A12 processor, stereo speakers, etc.

Do not confuse unavailable with sold out.

Yesterday there were still 128 and 256 available in almost every colour, and there were also some 64's left too. They have obviously shifted the delivery window now due to logistics. They can't guarantee they can deliver orders placed now in the original time frame. Apple is all about under promise and over deliver. Apple always deliver orders before the quoted date in my experience and I'm guessing orders placed now would possibly still arrive on Friday.
128 and 64GB were sold out in coral and yellow over the weekend and 64GB was sold out in all the other colours except white.

I think so. They had more than a month to make enough phones for launch day.
The difference between Xr and X last year is the variety of colors available, just like Apple Watch many SKU may lead to certain models be hard to get on launch day. They're just in time for the holidays though, in a few weeks it will be easy to get an Xr

The biggest difference is the price..It is nearly a third cheaper....

I think this is pretty accurate. I love high end phones however by the time I've put it in a wallet case, I really don't think I will notice the difference. I think I'm also ready for a bigger phone but not an XS bigger phone.

Thought the same as the X and Xs had the same 375 points in width than the iPhone 6,7,8. The width is much more important than the height for me. The Xr has 414 points but it is also a lot thicker (8.3 mm). Hope I can live with that....

Loads in stock yesterday morning, waiting on credit card to arrive.

New credit card turned up, went to order one last night for store pickup on Friday ... and nope. All stock gone. :(

May be worth going to your local Apple Store to see if they have any walk in stock on Friday. They've generally have a few extra in stock at previous launches.

The people who this phone is aimed at don't pre order phones. This phone will destroy the Xs phones in sales.
Exactly.
iPhone Xr will have relatively steady sales over time. This is the phone my mother in law and normal people will buy throughout the year when they upgrade. It's not a launch-day purchase for most people in the target audience.

Really? Because I waited and pre-ordered. The XR is 90 percent of the iPhone XS for 25 percent cheaper. But I will agree that it will destroy the XS in sales. The vast majority of consumers will say “oh it does virtually everything the XS does with longer batter life , larger screen and much cheaper? SOLD” . The XS only exists to sell loads of the XR. The XS is for padding their pockets, the XR is what you’re gonna see most people with in 2019.
Obviously people are preordering Xr. However, it seems likely that more people preordered iPhone Xs/Max, but that iPhone Xr will outsell Xs/Max in the Spring, for example.

Sounds like you didn't pre order Apple Watch Series 4. They were cutting it pretty close this year, and a lot of people who ordered stainless steel models had their dates pushed back.

Your definition of “a lot” must be very different than mine. The XR is 0.6 mm thicker than the XS. About half a millimeter. I don’t even have a tool capable of measuring something that small. Unless you’re holding both in your hand at the same time and specifically trying to judge the difference in thickness, no human being is ever going to notice that.

Compared that to my former iPhone 6 which was 6.9 mm thick. The difference in this case is 1.4 mm which is noticeable as I watch my new Xr case and put my old 6 inside. Even my big iPad 12.9 is only 6.9 mm thick which is about 20% thinner than the Xr...

Please, anybody who went from 7 plus to XR, tell us if the screen is better (even with less ppi) if the camera is a significant upgrade from 7 plus, and the battery life compared.

Much appreciated

Totally agree that the XR will be the big seller. In fact, I think it is going to be the work horse of the iPhone brand for years to come as it drops down in price point and Apple adds additional colors.
But the XS is not for padding the pockets, it is for folks who can afford to (or are simply willing) to buy the best. And for folks who really care about the camera. I'm in that boat. And I'm glad Apple makes a phone for me.

And this isn't the XS killer, this is XS Max killer. $450 less to buy a size with enough storage, you get the better battery life, and you get the bigger screen. There really is no reason to buy the Max unless, again, you have plenty of money so that saving $450 doesn't matter or you really want the best camera set up.

But the numbers Apple will put up selling this phone in China alone is going to be silly. And with the battery life and the processor power, this is a phone that will be kicking around for years. Maybe it will even be in regular use throughout the world five years from now. And by that I mean a hundred million being used as daily driver phones.

This is the phone that folks are going to buy and rave about to their friends. And it will be the phone that gets handed down and bought used because it is great, battery life will be great even years later on tired batteries, and can handle all the iOS updates for years.

It’s unbelievable that after all this time, people still don’t realize that the direct higher end replacement for the XR is the XS Max. The XS has considerably less screen real estate than the XR, since the XR and XS Max show the exact same amount of info on screen. Both the XR and XS Max show 22% more info than the XS.

IOW, in terms of screen real estate, the XS is a pretty big downgrade from the XR.

I bought the Xs Max, for the screen and camera. The Xr looks incredible and would have been an excellent upgrade from the 7 Plus I had. I am impressed with this lineup. To me the 8 wasn’t worth upgrade the X too small. Last year was first time I skipped an upgrade since the first.

The XR is a smaller XS Max, rather than a larger XS, but screen real estate is only one factor. Some people will prefer the smaller size of the XS, and the improved contrast ratio and resolution of the OLED screen. All 3 models are very close, and it will come down to personal preference and budget.

I did, and had a delivery date in the 8 October range. However I cancelled as I snagged one in-store the day after launch. 44mm Stainless Steel with White Sport.

I checked yesterday evening and 12 of the 18 variants were still available for delivery on the 26th. That's in the UK.

I can’t see that they all sold out overnight. It seems more likely that Apple has reallocated the stock for in-store collection.

That all depends. Did Apple restrict how many they made? Are they building up the hype, or are they truly sold out. I'd go with it being a bit of a marketing ploy with only slight constraint.

If you are an Apple users or watcher for a while, you know the answer. Apple use to launch iPhone in 12 to 13 country in Sept, then the next tier of 20+ countries in Nov, and finally all remaining countries in Dec. and over the year, they improve the number of launch countries. this year, XR is launched in 51 countries at the same time. XS and XS max were launched in 33 countries in late Sept. If Apple want to generate hype, all they need to do is to launch only in 10 or so countries and let hundreds of Chinese / Vietnamese / Russian scalpers line up in front of Apple stores. This year, the longest line during XS and XS max launch was in Singapore and the line were mostly Vietnamese scalpers because Vietnam was not in the first launch group. Just look at the number of launch countries, you can see how much confidence Apple and the telecom / resellers around the globe has on XR and the massive production that come with it to launch in 51 countries at the same time.

Scalpers are terrible for Apple. They raise the cost of IPhone buyers and they also create a warranty logistic nightmare for Apple. Think about fixing a US version of IPhone in China or Eastern Europe. There is no incentive to artificially create hype for iPhone. Apple is marketing the new iPhone mostly to it’s own active iPhone base (which is in the 800+m range now) and enticing users to upgrade their phone. Comparing android and IOS phones has very little meaning at this point. There are only very small percentage of users willing to move from one ecosystem to the other. The time spent in learning and migrating all the user data make it hard to change, Apple’s hope is to shorten the average replacement cycle from 2.6-2.7 years now to 2.2-2.3 years range. IPhone 6, 6S and 7 users as a group are the majority of active IOS users today, and Apple is trying to persuade these group of users to upgrade.

I am replacing my 8 with the 64 black xr. Really need a bigger screen due to retinal issues. I preordered because on Friday ups will deliver my phone, I won’t have to drive miles or stand in any lines. This is my 7th iPhone and preordering is a really convenient process for me. Can’t wait for Friday.
