Dude, where's the notch?

Uh, virtually every low-mid range Android phone comes with a 1080p screen.

Yup, but that doesn't necessarily make it a better phone. From all reviews, the LCD is one of the best out there. When I look at performance, camera quality, build quality, battery life, updated design, Face ID, security, privacy, ecosystem, apps, and support - the XR still comes out as the better option.

That's because it is about the only lcd out there. Lol

That was very interesting. Basically the only time my phone camera fails to capture an adequate picture is low light. Having an advantage in that situation is huge. But after reading this I now know to never turn on Portrait mode in low light situations on my XS. I shoot a lot of my pictures in portrait mode so this is important to keep in mind for me.

He also points out that you can get the storage size you need (128gb) for $450 less than the Max's 256gb. Since one should pretty much never buy any model at the 64gb (if only for the resale value to be high), this is a very big difference. And you get two features of the Max in screen size and battery life in the XR. Seems like the Max is really going to be the phone left out in the cold in 2019 when it has to compete against the XR.

The best part of his review (which someone needs to stick on Schiller’s desk this morning) was comparing storage options between the XR and the XS. It costs only $50 more to get the best storage option for the XR. With the XS it’s $150. There’s no technical reason for Apple not offering 128GB model with the XS. That’s what the entry level XS should start at. Of course it doesn’t because if it did then Apple couldn’t upsell you and extract an extra $150. That’s what’s criminal. I’m glad Gruber is highlighting it.

Fully agreed here - and this has been my take away since the September event.

If you need to step up one option on storage (ie 64GB isn’t enough), the jump creates an additional $100 in difference between the XR and XS/Max. I had mentioned this in other threads but where I am in Canada it results in a $700 difference from the XR to XS Max ($1241 vs $1952).

I’m honestly quite surprised that there’s a $50 option to jump to 128GB. Wish they had that with the XS as well. Going to the already crazy expensive XS and needing to spend another $150 for a storage jump just hurts. Not to mention AppleCare+ if you’re worried about the potential of needing to pay for a replacement phone if you crack the rear glass.

I think people should just give it up. It’s not going to happen.
But what will they put out next year? I feel like this (XS/Max/XR) is their lineup for a while. Adding a smaller XR (mini) model would make sense if they can pull it off. But yeah, not likely.

Nope, there are plenty of LCD screens out there still. The high end phones have all moved to OLED. I prefer OLED, but it's not as big of a trade off as people make it. iPhone's have been praised for their screens for years, regardless of the tech behind it. It's a good concession for Apple to make to reduce costs a bit as it doesn't make any negative impact on the use of the phone. It will still be better than every Android out there, aside from the screen.

It’s going to be a really hard sell for the average consumer who isn’t particularly looking for a smaller screen especially since for many people their phone is the only computer they use regulary

So no selfies or biometrics to unlock your phone
It won't be the only option of course. Just a 3rd model. Seems likely that they will eventually sell a small, medium and large phone with nearly the same specs. Using size as the only differentiating factor.

The XR should of been the iPhone 7. The iPhone X should of been the iPhone 8. And the XS should of been the iPhone 8s.

The iPhone 7 and 8 were a waste of phones. Just another iPhone 6.
As someone who went from a 6 Plus to 7 Plus, I have to say you're sorely mistaken. And if you think every year calls for a drastic redesign, you must be disappointed a lot.

I really wish apple would release the software for the wide angle lens in the xs and xr to be able to do portrait without the zoom lens. It should be enabled for the higher end phones in software after a few updates possibly?

Looking forward for mine. Ordered the black 128GB version. I am upgrading from my trusty iPhone SE because I recently dropped it and now it has a crack in the screen. I didn't really want such a big phone. I am curious if I can adopt to the huge size.

Are there any comparisons out yet between the XR and XS camera? Currently using a iPhone 7 but I'm stunned aboutl the depth control options. Wouldn't require always the big camera... I just wonder how much difference the software (xr) does make compared to the hardware (xs with additional telephoto lens). However overall XR looks like the better choice but I would prefer a smaller display. :)

Really happy with my pre-order choice of the XR over the XS Max. At $800 for 128 gb vs $1250 for 256 gb, it was just too big of a leap (64 gb just isn't enough). Over 50% more in cost, nah.

Although I am still struggling with the idea of going from my SE to the XR, I've decided to ditch my tablet so this will be my middle ground.

My iPhone for years has had all day battery life. What are you guys seriously doing on your phones all day? Are you stuck in a narcissistic loop of taking selfies and posting them on social media? Do you need me to send help??
Haha, yeah my 3 year old iPhone 6s with it's almost 2 year old battery (replaced by Apple) still gets me through a full day no problem, but I'm not glued to my screen all bloody day so...

Sounds like this will be a hugely successful line. I'm even considering downgrading from my XS Max to an XR if they can't get their LTE reception/speeds figured out. I haven't had LTE speeds this bad since... well, since before LTE was even a thing. I thought the problem was overblown, but then I started noticing it more and more. It's bad.

Glad to see the battery reports are everything we hoped they'd be. Not to mention that this has the most performance of any phone, on a per-pixel basis, by a landslide :D

On a "per pixel" basis - Yea if you stick a much lower resolution LCD in a screen with less pixels in a phone with an A12 then obviously it's gonna be the best on a per pixel basis

-that's pretty d*** sexy

I picked up a new SE on special for a family member. While I was waiting for the new phones, I decided to use the SE and sell my 6s. I just couldn't bring myself to pay 1500$ for a max with 512. I wanted it but couldn't commit over that price. So, I'm still using this SE. It is so convenient being able to pop into my pocket, and use with one hand. As I age it is getting tougher to see the tiny screen, but I really enjoy this form factor.

I ordered an XR and the SE will go as planned. But, I would want a SE design like you showed.

Hey, at least gamers are probably happy about it! More power driving less pixels means higher frame rates.

Really though, I do wish the XR had the 401 ppi of the old Plus models. Those are much more on par with the OLED screens when you consider subpixel arrangement averages (and don't have the 'dirty' effect of OLED).

The single lens rear camera will also flawlessly work with my macro lens & circular filter, a disciplin in which the XS totally failed. Example attached.
IMHO the tele lens should be replaced with a real no distortion wide angle, like 120°+ (12 or 14mm-ish equivalent), while the normal lens should be at ~50mm with a macro capability. Current setup is pointless, like all the other triple and quad cameras, except of course, when we only add them for depth control.
