If the XS and XS Max are not dramatically better then the X why would you want to wait for the XR? Using that logic would make the XR worse then the X. When you are paying that much money you might as well pay a little more and get the best especially when you purchase a luxury brand like Apple. The XR just screams "I want an iPhone, but I really can't afford it." The extra money you spend will make your experience better and people will notice you have the best iPhone.
If I were to get the Xs or Max, it's going inside a protective case. I'm not paying to repair a damaged phone or having to buy a new one. I've already dropped my phone a few times and thankfully it was already in a case.

I pulled the trigger on a Xs Max!! I'm really excited coming from a 6 plus. I'm interested in seeing how the Xr compares, but I really like the OLED screens I've encountered on TVs and am banking (see what I did there ;) on it being worth it.

Reviewers from across the globe have put iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max to the test. Here’s some of what they’re saying:

Mashable
“The improved camera hardware combined with a new automatic ‘Smart HDR’ technology, powered again by the Neural Engine and the A12 Bionic’s ISP (image signal processor), mean you get the best of both the advanced camera optics and computational photography.”

TechCrunch
“In terms of CPU performance the world’s first at-scale 7nm architecture has paid dividends. You can see from the iPhone XS benchmarks that it compares favorably to fast laptops and easily exceeds iPhone X performance.”

Daring Fireball
“iPhones can’t compete with big dedicated cameras in lens or sensor quality. It’s not even close. The laws of physics prevent it. But those traditional camera companies can’t compete with Apple in custom silicon or software, and their cameras can’t compete with iPhones in terms of always-in-your-pocket convenience and always-on internet connectivity for sharing. In the long run, the smart money is to bet on silicon and software.”

The New York Times
“Apple did a terrific job of increasing screen size without adding bulk or compromising the usability of the [iPhone] XS Max. … These changes amounted to meaningful improvements in ergonomics and overall convenience.”

Best Products
“We found [iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max] to offer a perfect blend of design, craftsmanship, industry-crushing performance, as well as a seamlessly intuitive user experience.”

Hypebeast
“It feels great to have a new device that’s optimized for speed. The time it takes to open an app is the difference between me forgetting an idea or not. With iPhone XS Max, I can do tasks more quickly, and features like the Camera feel more refined than ever before. All these little things are welcome updates that make the workflow from my creative standpoint easier.” — Virgil Abloh, founder of OFF-WHITE and Louis Vuitton artistic director

Medium
“In the pure-play photography race, though, Apple takes the lead. Its Smart HDR uses sensor, ISP and neural engine enhancements to capture some of the best high-dynamic range photos I’ve ever seen.”

Tom’s Guide
“[To transcode a 2-minute 4K video to 1080p,] iPhone XS and iPhone XSMax knocked it down further to 39 seconds. … The Galaxy S9+ took 2 minutes and 32 seconds to complete the task, and that's the fastest we’ve seen from an Android phone. … Based on our testing, the A12 Bionic processor inside the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max make these the fastest phones you can buy.”

Dailymail.com (UK)
“From a hugely updated processor, to an updated camera and terrifying loud speakers, everything about the [iPhone] XS feels faster, snappier and better thought out than in any previous iPhone.”

TechRadar (UK)
“The iPhone XS is for those that want a fast, powerful and impressive smartphone — not just Apple lovers.”

Hardwarezone (Singapore)
“One of the best things about iPhone photographs is their bright, vivid colors, and the iPhone XS takes that up a notch.”

Sydney Morning Herald (Australia)
“The impact of the OLED display is pretty seductive. In fact, the whole thing is pretty seductive.” — Mags King, Sydney Morning Herald photo editor

Austin Mann
hey I've been working with the iPhone XS in Zanzibar for the last week and can't believe how well this thing captures even the craziest lighting conditions. Stay tuned for more thoughts in my review later today.

Oh, and faster LTE made me laugh. At least for USA with its cellular oligopoly, LTE speeds can rarely go above 10/20Mbps (and this is best case scenario at least here on the east coast). You will always be limited by the carrier, and faster phone LTE implementation wont matter.

Except for the testing that shows it is significantly faster thanks to the new 4x4 modem.

You may have to change your helmet if you want to use a FaceID model: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/faceid-w-helmets-etc.2067125/page-2#post-25539957

yeah, I'd never compromise on safety. I never ride without full gear, boots, gloves and a full face helmet so it's likely I'll never be able to unlock my phone without removing my helmet or typing in a huge passcode.

Anyone that shows text messages on their lock screen w/o authentication is crazy though. If someone takes your phone, 2 factor codes are sent to your phone so that string of characters can be seen by anyone. Best to keep messages behind authentication.

It also terrifies me that you're paying attention to that many gadgets while riding a motorcycle, but hey, you do you. I won't even look down at my Apple Watch while bicycling.

My use case is not unique though. everyone commuting or touring on a bike has a phone front & center now with bluetooth communication in their helmet. It's not impacting any hands free laws to have a phone in front of you in a car like everyone out there nor is it illegal to have a phone in front of you on a motorcycle. It's the interaction of it while in motion that's illegal and I don't do that.

You have vision issues, yet you use your phone while driving? That makes no sense. Thank God that you can’t unlock it.
[doublepost=1537293830][/doublepost]

People pay per month so the amount is minimal. Better sell your stock, buy a crap android and teach Apple a lesson.
Did you think that maybe I’d like to unlock my phone and check messages while in bed without having to put my glasses or contact lenses on? I’m 20/15 with contacts so I see perfectly fine thank you.

I don’t see the point of people claiming they are not going to upgrade from the iPhone X to the Xs. How many people are even going to do that?

I am the only one to view Face ID as a huge downside? Are people really that lazy to type in a passcode? Face ID screams Big Brother no matter how you look at it, and it seems that all future Apple phones are fully onboard. (and Android is worse being tied to a mandatory Google account if you want to do anything at all on it).

Apple claims Face ID is processed on the phone locally, but where is the guarantee that they wont open it up when .gov flexes its hand? All major tech companies are already in bed with Big Brother despite all of their privacy talk (look at their actions - Big Brother is made mandatory via cloud with non-cloud functionality slowly eliminated (in the name of convenience, ofcourse). Either way, Face ID is a huge negative for me, which is why both me and wife will continue using our 7+ and 8 until they fall apart.

Rant aside, what XR should have done is drop Face ID and instead go with OLED and dual rear camera, while keeping the price the same - that would have been a real winner and a real upgrade from 7/8. Current form XR is a downgrade for a 7/8 user due to inferior (to 7/8) display, Face ID Big Brother, worse camera (compared to the +). Yes it has faster CPU, but i think phones are at a point where further CPU speed increase wont matter for 99% of population (After A10).

Oh, and faster LTE made me laugh. At least for USA with its cellular oligopoly, LTE speeds can rarely go above 10/20Mbps (and this is best case scenario at least here on the east coast). You will always be limited by the carrier, and faster phone LTE implementation wont matter.

XR isn’t a screen downgrade from 7/8, it just isn’t an improvement, specs are almost identical. It is however a lower PPI than the larger 7/8 plus models which is maybe what you meant.

The camera in the XR uses the same new sensor as in the XS, which is 32 percent larger than in the X/8 and reportedly produces significantly better results. XR is missing the optical zoom of the 7/8 plus and X/XS, however the telephoto lens in the XS uses the old sensor anyway so misses out on most of the improvements made to image quality in the XS.

I agree with your comments regarding CPU and 15% is a marginal increase but the key is the massive improvements to the neural engine and image processor.

Here is an extract from John Gruber’s XS review:

“Compared to last year’s iPhone X, the XS and XS Max are solid refinements across the board, but deliver a dramatic year-over-year step forward in photo and video quality.“

“What I find most interesting is that the two things responsible for that step forward — the A12 system (including the same Apple Neural Engine) and the much larger new wide-angle camera sensor — are included in the upcoming iPhone XR, which, for the same amount of storage, costs $250 less than than the XS and $350 less than the XS Max. I suspect there are a lot of people out there who don’t care about the telephoto lens on the XS and who don’t see much if any difference between the XR’s LCD display and the XS’s OLED one who are looking at these prices thinking they must be missing something. They’re not.”

Do you really notice what kind of iPhone people have? I only notice if a friend tells me about it..........for most people I don't give a rats ass, and for sure they don't about me. iPhone XR will be a great phone for most people just as the 8 and 8 Plus were before. And at 750 it hardly screams "I really can't afford it".
I like the x-r colors but it does look like a wanna be iPhone x and I can already see people thinking and bragging they have an iPhone X when in reality they will have a $300 to $700 cheaper phone.

I want that purple background from the verge review

I thought this had to be a joke, until I saw other people agree with you! o_O

I came in here just to post that I would wager $10 that next year Apple would require The Verge to sign something agreeing not to disgrace their beautiful phone with that god awful ugly logo. That has to be the most horrific looking iPhone desktop I've ever seen. I am dying laughing at how bad it is ;)

And what is the problem If they do? Do you realize some people might actually be excited to own and XR, consider it a big upgrade from their phone and / or actually had to save quite a bit to obtain it? People actually value things differently

Why would someone upgrade from an X to Xs?! I thought that before any of these reviews but clearly the experts are saying the same now.

I wouldn’t even dare upgrade from an X to an Xr!

For the camera.

1.5 hour longer battery life, thinner bezels, faster faceID, 7nm, 6.5 inch size, brand new camera. This is the phone the X should've been.

Not to mention that the A12 is literally twice (!!) as fast in the the GPU department.
[doublepost=1537303023][/doublepost]
That's fine, but for other users there's no reason to buy an X while the XS exists. Even if the X were still being sold for say 899, you would actually be getting less value.

Thinner bezels than iPhone X? Where did you get that? And the GPU is 50% faster not 100%, so is not twice as fast.

In my case the only interesting update is the bigger screen. But I still haven’t made my mind if it is worth it

Apple pulled a fast one on me. I held back and used my 6+ for an extra year so I could switch to the S cycle releases. The year i did that, they switched the cycle on me and now I’m back to being on the non-S (?) cycle using an X ‍♂️

If you take a couple minutes to search this forum you’d be surprised.

This forum isn’t necessarily an accurate indicator of the typical shopping habits of Apple customers in general. Technology simply doesn’t improve quickly enough to allow for the type of significant updates that would tempt users to upgrade their mobile devices on an annual basis (much less if you want to implement those features properly), and I dare say Apple is already moving mountains to manage an annual refresh cycle for the iPhone and the Apple Watch.

I know this forum isn’t, but speaking outside of the forum doesn’t necessarily make sense as it’ll be specific to the person, people they are around and nothing said can be verified.

Does anyone know if the Max will allow multitasking? Since it's so large I would like to run two apps at the same time.
