Objectively, it's a totally different phone than the 8+ so while you can have your own opinion, the XS is a major upgrade. You essentially have a 4 year old design....which is the biggest weakness of the 8. FaceID is also a game changer. I would never want to go back to TouchID or huge bezels.
I'm not bothered by Touch ID or Face ID, as long as they work reliably. Otherwise there are no compelling upgrades that are yelling "buy me" and it's still too expensive at £1000.

"If you wear glasses like me, you'll still have to enter your passcode every morning when you wake up because you're holding the phone too close to your face for it to work."

Patel is full of it. Works fine for me, glasses or not. What a weirdo.
Yep--I wear glasses all day every day, and my iPhone X does not care if I have them on or off or if I put on an old pair in certain situations. It unlocks either way. Patel has always had it in for FaceID. I actually think he went pretty easy on it this time around. Last year he seemed to hate it.

Same here. I love FaceID.

True. I just feel like they could say “hey if you own an X, it’s not a HUGE evolution in features, but if you’re coming from a 2-5 year old phone, definitely consider it. and if you’re not sold, wait and compare with the XR.”
I feel like they did say that at the end of their video reviews, at least the verge and wired.

The iPhone XR is too big to be considered for me. Also, the XR has poorer specs, its not the same as the iPhone XS with just the LCD screen. eg inferior wifi, 3gb ram, no 3D touch (I do use it), bigger screen but less resolution that the iPhone 6 Plus, no stereo mics, and who knows what else.

It’s a shame that the XS hasn’t been able to top the Pixel 2’s camera performance a year later. (Per The Verge’s review at least) I’m excited to see what the Pixel 3 can do.
That "review" was basically, "We like the Pixel 2 camera better."

I mean, at least give some objectivity, facts, or actual observations.

If you don’t mind the high price tag and big screen phone, go with the max. It has a better battery life.
I’m in the same boat but I’m actually worried about the weight. I’m coming from the 7+ and the screen size isn’t a problem as I can palm a basketball but something even heavier than the 7+ would probably bother me. On the other hand I do love the plus size battery, I often get 1 1/2 day with my 7+.

the pixel 2 is a year old and still beats the crap out of both iphone and note 9. the thing is so good i use it on my note instead of samsungs software.

i never trust "camera" reviews. all they do is take still photos of buildings and plants in well lit conditions. use the phones in every day life and its no comparison.

The cameras in the Xs are nearly identical those in the X.
But that’s only half the story. The all new ISP and operations that run on the neural engine are the secret sauce.

We’re in a new paradigm for photography on smartphones. All the flagships have fantastic hardware, but all have different approaches in software to get an image processed. Gone are the days where there’s going to be a clear overall “winner” in quality as each manufacturer decides one what’s most important. iPhones historically stick to color accuracy while others may use more saturation but have less noise in zoomed shots. We need to shake off the notion that these cameras from different phones can be compared 1:1, those days are gone.

There's no need for ppl on a budget to upgrade annually. Every two years is fine. I stretch it out to 3 years. It's still a phone to me.

This ONE HUNDRED PERCENT. None if the reviews look at the PPI of the XR — it is literally much worse than my four year old 6+. It is not even 1080p with more screen realestate.
What are you talking about, the 326 ppi is exactly the same as the iphone 8 which only came out last year... It’s pretty unanimous that iphone 8 has a great lcd screen... Yes if you look really closely you can see the pixels, not an issue for 99% of people including me.

Yes but the Xr is a lot bigger than the iPhone 8 which is why the ppi and resolution should be higher. It’s not about the number it’s about the context.

I thought they did? They mentioned how the Pixel captures more details whereas the iPhone tended to blur things a bit too much.

Perfect! That's exactly what I wanted. I'm upgrading from a 4 year old iPhone 6 Plus. I almost pulled the trigger last year with the X, but I really wanted the bigger display along with another year of refinement for Face ID. I'm quite happy I ordered the Xs Max.
Should be a super-solid upgrade for you, then! I’m going to a XS Max from an 8, so, a variety of upgrades for me.

People are really not satisfied with this upgrade. There is no incentive to upgrade, which is a huge knock for apple. The XR is the incentive this year, which is weird because it's a cost cutting device at a relatively high price.

I'd expect another big upgrade next year, the S model used to be fun; but now it's literally just a spec bump. Sad.

at the end of the day you always go back using the same apps most of the time so really at the end of the day it doesnt really matter unless you just want the latest or better battery, camera or different size

Nothing really surprising, they are great phones but hardly worth the upgrade over last year's generation (unless you really, really want that 6,5” OLED screen). I’m happy with my 8+ and exited for next year.

We need to see the cameras in action before we can say how good the upgrades are.
