Makes me interested to see what the Pixel 3 will end up really having under the hood, as well as who ends up making both handsets. Somehow the Pixel ended up having better cameras than the HTC and LG phones they shared parts with.

Not sure I am sold on 3 cameras, but I would see value in a wide angle on some occasions!.

Like the Chinese knockoff cars, they try to look the part but don't succeed. Under the hood it's not even a competition.
LG is a Korean company.

That said, they are not ashamed of knockoffs either.

Why do we keep comparing android phones to iPhones? Even if the hardware is better you’re still stuck with android. I have a galaxy 9s+ for work and while the hardware is comparable to the iPhone XS max, the software is horrible in my opinion.

I'm not sure why people continue to tout so called iPhone competitors. The truth is there is nothing out there that can complete remotely with any iPhone in the lineup.
Depends on your meaning of compete? There are lots of Android phones that can compete against iPhones on price for better hardware... or on Androids ability to allow for expandable storage... or Androids ability to customize the way your phone operates... or Androids ability to turn your phone into a mini computer with full use of a mouse and keyboard... or Android makers pushing technology forward that Apple always adds to the iPhone (Wireless charging, NFC, LTE, just to name a few).

So yeah, Android phones compete with iPhones and are better in many instances depending on how you look at things.

Wait, so the LG only has FIVE cameras? I wouldn't buy a phone with fewer than 12 cameras, personally.
LOL. The amount of cameras is getting ridiculous. This whole idea of adding more and more cameras is getting absurd!

The anger of the Apple lovers here is just hilarious. Seriously, who cares what they copy? Everyone copies everyone. Good grief.
Everybody should care. You should care too.
Also I can see the writing on the wall now.

2018: 3 rear cameras? No one needs that! That’s absurd! What a gimmick!

2019: (Same people) The iPhone 11 is the BEST PHONE EVER! Those 3 rear cameras are amazing and produce the best photos I’ve ever seen! Apple rules!
So what's your point? ;)

With $1500 (before tax or Apple Care) phones, Apple has entered in the looney territory.

Android phones don’t need to compete with iPhone XS or XS Max. They need to be able to compete with the iPhone XR.

You sacrifice machine learning and all the wonders it can do. Instead of having a powerful calculator you add the engine for AI, and that open a new road for App developers to explore that in other chips is just not possible. It's probably one of the biggest breakthrough in mobile chips ever.
and how does this translate in the real world? what does it do that other phones cant?

Everybody should care. You should care too. So what's your point? ;)
I care. I think it’s great. Consumers benefit from choice. The faster ideas are adopted, the easier it is for everyone to iterate. That’s especially important in fast paced and constantly evolving markets like this one.

My “point” is that people see things through the lens they have, rather than start “tabula rasa” to evaluate the facts and develop an opinion from them. We see it in politics and we see it in tech. It’s dangerous. It’s sad.

Man, that NOTCH is such a bloody eyesore. Hate Apple for introducing it, and hate every other company on earth for always citing Apple, no matter how ugly their design is.
Yeah. It is. But you’ll get over it. People got over not having BetaMax and instead took the much inferior VHS.

Just buy it. Look at it a long time. Soon the brain washing will commence, and maybe you’ll join the ranks of those who “love” the notch because it’s “distinctive.”

Oh the mental acrobatics people will do when reality doesn’t line up with their world view....

LG today debuted its next-generation smartphone, the LG V40 ThinQ, equipped with an all glass body and a display notch for housing camera equipment, much like the iPhone XS and XS Max.

We were able to get one of LG's new V40 ThinQ smartphones ahead of their launch, and we've got the first V40 ThinQ vs. iPhone XS Max comparison that highlights the differences between Apple's flagship device and LG's new flagship device.

The LG V40 ThinQ features an all glass body with an aluminum frame, while the iPhone XS Max has an all glass body with a stainless steel frame. Apple has done away with the headphone jack, but the V40 still has one, and instead of a Lightning port, it features a USB-C port.

In the hand, the LG V40 ThinQ feels lighter than the iPhone XS Max, but due to the size, it's still a two-handed device.

lgv40iphonexsmaxbody-800x527.jpg

The V40 measures in at 6.4 inches with a high-quality HDR OLED display that is as sharp and vibrant as the 6.5-inch HDR OLED display of the iPhone XS Max.

iphonexsmaxvslgv40front-800x524.jpg

Both devices have a front-facing notch, and while the V40's notch is somewhat less obtrusive, it's also housing lesser equipment. The V40 ThinQ features two front-facing cameras, one with 8 megapixels and the second with 5 megapixels. The cameras enable a fast and efficient facial recognition feature for unlocking the device, but as with most Android implementations, it's not using 3D facial mapping and is less secure.

lgv40iphonexsmaxnotch-800x510.jpg

Because of the weaker facial recognition implementation, LG's new device continues to offer a fingerprint sensor at the back.

The back of the LG V40 ThinQ is outfitted with three horizontal cameras, while the iPhone XS Max uses a dual camera system. In the V40, there's a 12-megapixel wide-angle lens, a 12-megapixel telephoto lens, and a 16-megapixel wide-angle lens.

The three cameras enable a range of useful features like Triple Shot for three photos at once from different angles, a Cine Shot for creating a photo with one part of the image in motion, and slow motion and portrait features similar to what you'll find in the iPhone XS Max.

lgiphonexsmaxcamera-800x484.jpg

We think the LG V40 is a solid iPhone XS Max competitor with its light weight and its impressive camera equipment, and in a future video, we'll delve further into the triple-lens camera system as rumors have suggested it's something we might see in next year's iPhones.

What do you think of the new LG V40 ThinQ? Does it measure up to the iPhone XS Max? Let us know in the comments.

I would like in depth camera comparisons.

For those who care about sound quality, one interesting item of note is that the LG phone has been audio-optimized by Meridian. They are true world-class experts in psycho-acoustics, and have, perhaps, the best history in all of high-end audio at moving digital audio technology forward.

For my purposes, this isn't nearly enough to take me away from the Apple universe, but it sure is a serious attempt at differentiation from the other Android phone companies.

Both are still too small to do any decent design work on, and too big to want in your pocket as a communicator all day.

A 3 year outdated iPad mini + an Apple Watch combo whomps them both.

The main issues I have with Android phones are:

1. Apps aren't well sandboxed. Malicious apps can and do steal and transmit data from other apps. Maybe this is fixed in current Android versions?

2. It's a crap shoot whether the phone ever get updated, even for glaring security issues.

3. I'm trapped in iMessage hell.

Interesting how the 2017 iPhone X was chastised heavily for having a notch, now the competition is supporting this feature, but less secure than Apples 3D facial mapping.
It's interesting how much quieter the Android fanboys are when it comes to criticizing Android notches than they were the Apple notch.

If Apple replaced the notch with a giant black circle right in the middle of the screen (say, the size of a quarter) that blocked all text and video, I swear that people would buy it in record numbers and other companies would copy that design.

I’m not even joking. If they are willing to copy that hideous notch and the removal of the headphone jack (for literally no reason, other than to copy Apple), they would copy anything Apple does.

The A12 powers the UI and overall experience to create a much more refined, less mechanical feeling device. The better responsiveness of a current iOS device is a tangible benefit that no current Android powered phone can offer. When the new iPhones ($$$) were announced I diligently shopped the competition and could not find anything as fluid. Maybe the next Pixel will have a better screen and finally catch up to Apple in terms of responsiveness, but the current Pixel is behind.
I would also add that if you go with Apple you're away from Google, and you are going to get a phone that will get supported almost twice as long as Google is currently supporting the Pixel.

Silly comment.

I think the notch is UGLY AS SIN, regardless of what phone it’s on. It’s only purpose it to look ugly. It literally serves no other purpose.

Ah, the Beta Max comparison, someone really doesn't understand their technology history, and is just relying on frankly wrong statements. VHS tapes lasted a long longer than Betamax tapes when they came out which meant you could get a whole movie on one tape rather than on 2 tapes. VHS was also cheaper than BetaMax. Whether you prefer the advantages of BetaMax over VHS is a matter of taste, but the notion that BetaMax was clearly superior to VHS is frankly wrong though I can see why some like to cling to that myth.
hate
As for the notch being awful, given how many companies have embraced it, the people who unequivocally hate the notch appear to be the people who are out of step.

Bro... You don’t even notice the notch while using the phone! As I’m typing this message all I see is the actual screen. I don’t know why people are so fixated on the notch. It’s allll the way up top.

Apple could’ve probably just made the notch stretch across the entire top so it looks more normal, but who cares. They probably wanted something “distinguishing”.

I think people hate it, just to hate it. Same way you think people copy Apple, just for the sake of copying Apple.

A12 is on a 7nm process chip. That's all that you need to know. Nothing else touches it no matter how much you hate either os.

according to steve, thats all you DONT need to know, hey but YOU know it better, nah?

By comparison, I have to wait for Siri to prepare before I can speak my query or instruction.
This hasn’t been necessary for years. You can say “Hey Siri” and your query together without delay. But I’m not debating that GA is faster overall.

Supreme power efficiency coupled with computing power that is literally years ahead of anything Android has to offer. Some things you don’t really notice, like the system detecting faces in photos and grouping photos of the same person together for you automatically. Other things you do, like when you play games with desktop level graphics.

~snip~

I am still using my Pixel 1 and not once have I ever thought "damn, this thing's slow", it's never been less than fully responsive so the computing power argument is meaningless, if you never get to use it.

As for trying to claim photo management as an Apple win, you reveal yourself. Google photos meta search is unbelievably good, truly. It amazes me still now how good it is each time I want to quickly search for an image. And yes, it can group by face too. Searching photos is a feature I use most days and given that it is both actually years ahead and of use to me, that is worthwhile.
