It seems to be hardware issue.

I have tested and display would simply not registered the swipe or click. Very likely to be touch sensor problem.

This doesn't seem to align with my experience or what others here are describing. Perhaps you're having a different issue?

Yup, you seem to be having an entirely different issue.

As someone here suggested, turning on screen recording eliminates the problem 100% for me so it appears to be a software issue with how throttling is managed. It’s incredible that the current chip is so powerful yet it wasn’t programmed to respond in nanoseconds as soon as you make the slightest contact with the screen.

It's the same issue. It seems to be stutter because the gesture is not recognized immediately and properly.

I first notice this when I was in News app, especially scrolling up and down with finger left off the screen in between.

I'm not seeing this with scrolling within apps but I am seeing a bit of stutter when closing an app after waiting 5 seconds or so.

Either way, in my opinion it’s unacceptable. For the price they are charging for the new phones, it should be at least as good as the previous series, but it’s not. I returned my XS and bought another X. The camera and speaker upgrades are nice, however I’ve always been more of a software guy and at this point, between this and reception problems, I can’t use the XS daily.

I'm curious what leads you to believe that it's a touch sensor problem when the symptom is alleviated by placing a small load on the system.

Sounds like it's aggressively migrating tasks from big cores to little cores for power saving.

I am a bit worried since there is only one thread about this issue on Apple Communities forum (posted by Willdude) :

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8565789

There are no other comments/threads about this problem. My guess is that Apple is even not aware about this so it will not been fixed in a near future.
[doublepost=1538747104][/doublepost]The charging and LTE issues seem far more widespread as compared to the stutter issue and that is why there are being addressed by Apple

It’s a weird problem for sure. I’m not so sure it’s software. I’ve tried a total of 3 XS and 3 XS Max display models, and could only replicate the problem on 1 XS. I personally had the problem on 2 XS that I’ve returned.

So did you find a replacement that didn’t exhibit this problem?

Just to add my two cents: Not only am I seeing this behaviour on two XS models (gold & black both 256gb) on the home screen and when scrolling certain apps but I am also an app developer working on some games and I've noticed the following:

On the iPhone XS (both versions we own) our game stops and stutters and looks poorly optimised, however on every other device down to iPhone 5S our game runs perfectly smoothly.

When troubleshooting we can see the app maintains 60fps but something about the way the iPhone XS is rendering the screen causes playback to stutter anyways.

This combined with the homescreen scrolling, app scrolling & video playback stutter issues (netflix, youtube etc.) documented in another thread tells me there is something very broken going on, perhaps to do with how iOS12 is managing the XS' low-power cores.

For me at least the stutter is such a subtle thing that I'd bet 99% of owners wouldn't notice or care. Even I was only kind of aware of it in the back of my mind until I saw this thread and realized, oh yeah, this is actually reproducible behavior. (And even now I don't think it's a big deal.) My hope was that by starting that Apple discussion thread more people would gravitate towards it in an official forum, but I'm not optimistic Apple will ever see it or directly address it.

Anyway, it definitely feels like a software issue to me, where some configuration or something is causing the GPU to respond slowly after a period of inactivity. My best hope right now is as they continue to refine iOS 12 for these new devices they iron out small performance issues like this.

Apple has gone through pains since day one of iOS to build its software stack for responsive touch sensing and response. This is clearly a bug. You can put a 1000 hp engine into a car but if the software for the gas pedal has a bug that 1000 hp doesn’t matter.

Submit bug reports and this will be fixed in an update.

So, my question now is, is there anyone that exchanged the iPhone XS and got his/her stuttering-problem solved?
Seems possible for me cause as I already mentioned, I switched from an XS Max to the regular XS. Both were restored from the same backup but the stutter/lag only occurred on the XS (non Max).

This. I’m afraid you have to be a special kind of neurotic to notice this/be bothered about this.

I’ve tried reproducing this on a total of 5 XS and XS Max display models, and I was able to do it on each and every one of them.

I hope this will be fixed in a future software update.

P.S. Maybe someone should send a message to UnboxTherapy about this (who essentially started the #chargegate) and we’ll soon have #stuttergate (I mean the ”gates” do get peoples attention, regardless of how preposterous one thinks the use of the word is)

I wouldn’t say neurotic. More like sensitive. I came from a 6s and it was very smooth, even before iOS 12 so maybe my eyes are just accustomed to smooth transitions. Now, when I read text and do a quick swipe down to read more, it’s very jarring to the eyes.

Pardon me for thinking that my $1000 phone should be at least as performant in everyday use as my three year old phone. I'm an iOS engineer. Noticing and being bothered by these things hardly makes me neurotic. It gets you higher quality software in the end.

What he said, plus occasionally this issue is very noticeable indeed. Please can everyone who is troubled by this submit a bug report to Apple, it could do with their attention ASAP.

I have a iPhone 7 and it’s so smooth, my Xs max is stuttering, sometimes lagging, animations are very choppy .. I don’t understand my 7 is feeling like a new phone and my Xs max is trash :(

I believe you’ve misunderstood me. I agree with both of you, 100%. The stutter certainly is disturbing and I don’t consider it acceptable to any degree. I’d personally be bothered by this no matter the price of the phone.

Perhaps the use of the word neurotic was wrong, but it is what I consider myself when it comes to tech (hence the use). I did not mean neurotic in a negative way. What I meant by this was that it is very likely that a vast majority of individuals, whose devices are suffering from this issue like ours are, simply do not notice this. Especially people who are not that interested in tech. For me it is immensely disturbing, to the extent I’ve personally considered returning the phone several times, having discussed the matter here and on other forums and tested display models in three different stores. However, I can see how this is not like chargegate, as it is certainly not as evident as the aforementioned.
