Because the components may fit into the same area but they aren’t the same technology. The CPU is a new and much more powerful chip, the A12-(link). In addition, there is more ram available to this years model than to last years, and memory seems to be an expensive addition for any brand of phone, Apple included.
Nah... the A12 isn't much faster as tests have already proven. RAM isn't expensive, Androids pack 6G easily. There's improvements in the XS, yes, but computing power/performance practically didn't improve.

1) depends on which benchmark one is looking at (Antutu shows greater gains)

2) one should look at performance per watt since we are talking about a mobile device

3) greater RAM allows for future proofing, it’s better and thus more valuable to end user

4) mobile SOCs have more functions than CPU/GPU, in particular ISP (image processing for photos and videos) and storage controller are much improved in A12

So... Except for the CPU upgrade, the Xs is last year's technology and design. Can someone please explain to me why the price of the phone hasn't gotten cheaper?
Well, you kinda explained why it's not cheaper. The cost differential (from the consumers standpoint) for a generational upgrade of CPU/GPU has always been $100.

Other years, they give you a few more freebies. This year, nada.

I have no issues with taking apart every iPhone till 7...But now the amount of glue is staggering. Its really had to put it back without the new parts as have no idea what glue are they using
Yeah that's why I don't want to get my devices repaired by people that aren't Apple, I want the glue on right, though I think you can purchase replacement adhesive online like you would other parts

Over the last few years, Apple managed to create a device that slows down large scale IP theft from Chinese and Korean hack shops. Huawei and Samsung can steal 7nm chip schematics all they want. But when you have 4low-2high cores, a neural engine, and the rest of the chip tailored specifically to your OS and hardware, that's much much harder to thief and replicate.

Johny Srouji, the true hero behind all of this.

That's why they've changed the way they presented it. Talking about time and not capacity, I was 100% sure something fishy is going on! AND HERE WE ARE!

They've always presented battery capacity in terms of time in marketing materials. I don't think I've ever seen anything official from Apple stating battery capacity in mAh for any product.

This is nothing new.

Obviously, the new battery has economic benefits for Apple. It's probably cheaper to buy or easier to source. The small drop in mAh is more than offset by the new chip/better software.

Amazing how much is squeezed into one device. Can you guys imagine what would be possible with an innovation/breakthrough for "micro-batteries"?

Two weeks ago the X cost $999.

Can someone please explain how this new phone has a new processor, upgraded camera, more RAM, stronger glass, faster LTE, some other minor improvements... And is the same price?

I think it’s a testament to how good the iPhone X truly was last year..

There is a reason Apple didn’t sell it for 899.99 along side the 2018 offerings lol

No one would have bought the XS.
Totally agree. I love my X, but everyone kept saying it was a beta device lol

Time to crack open a Heineken and read that site. Or play it safe (PABST BLUE RIBBON!!) and Google Translate.

It's funny how the Taptic engine takes up probably as much or more space than a headphone jack... Would you rather have a headphone jack, or the Taptic engine?

We have to use new sealant as to prevent water getting inside (IP67). Unless you use the sealant, the phone won't be water resistant after the re-assembly. All the iPhones (6s and prior) are not water resistant.

It's called a price drop, and negotiating prices.... Mind blown.

What an amazing example of micro- and nano-packaging engineering in display. The XS just rocks inside.

After teardown of so many nano-bits and pieces -- will anyone be able to reassemble the XS back together? And, have it work and preserve water- and dust-tightness?

Do not think so.
