I'm pretty sure most of the tariffs will be postponed next week. If not, brace for a deep recession.

Nintendo has postponed its new Switch 2 pre-orders in the US only ‘indefinitely’ whilst they review pricing, due to the rather large tariffs Trump has put on their goods now. It is a bit of a meltdown if you read the news globally and across the board of trade.
Oh my god, what are we going to do without Nintendo switches. Priorities are out of whack with some of you.

There is already a movement to avoid American goods because of the imposition of these tariffs. If American companies seek to help Americans by spreading the cost elsewhere, I see that bandwagon getting very big, very quickly.
Another fear monger willing to sit by while others fleece our wallets. Meanwhile the people won’t be be getting cheap widgets from Amazon at an alarming rate continue their meltdowns.

Not a fear monger. I'm British. Today I have seen multiple social media posts from my friends saying they will boycott American goods over these tariffs. I have seen multiple adverts describing themselves as offering alternatives to American goods and services. There is desire and opportunity to avoid American goods over these tariffs. If we have to pay so that Americans can avoid some of their new tax burden, we won't be happy.

US GDP per capita is around 90K USD, more than double the EU average, which is already considered wealthy in most parts of the world.

Maybe there is a problem with how this wealth is distributed in the US? I doubt, that the currently proposed tariff plan will really change that substantially. Since it's a tax increase, it will most likely make things worse for a large share of the population.

explain to me how we have been "screwed for decades"?

We haven't been. But at the same time, we're currently VERY dependent on cheap labor and production from other countries, and the only value we bring to those countries (with regard to trade) is our ability to buy and consume like no other country in history. No quick and easy way out of that, and maybe no way out of it, but it's also not a great position to be in.

Not sure if it was mentioned anywhere, if so please correct me. But, shouldn't the tariffs affect the OEM costs/prices and NOT the MSRP prices? So if making an iPhone costs $200, but Apple Sells it for $800. Then the 50% or so tariff should affect the $200 price. So it's $300 now. And not the $800 price, turning it into $1200.

And I'm not defending this policy at all. But, it's even more indefensible for ANYONE to have to pay that much more for any product. It's not like we are all given a 50% raise to compensate for it. OR EVER WILL BE!!

The iPhone 16 base model is estimated to have a manufacturing cost of $416. Apple charges $799 at retail. In 2023 there were no tariffs on iPhone imports because smartphones were exempted from tariffs coming from countries with Most Favored Nation status. So, Apple is marking up their landed cost by 92%. If smartphones are no longer exempt, then that $416 gets increased 54% due to Trump's tariff and becomes $641. [IOW, Apple has to invest an additional $225 per phone brought into the country.] If Apple wants to maintain its margins (which I assure you it will try like hell to do), then, absent any other changes to their overall pricing and cost structure, the iPhone 16 base model phone has to go to $1230.

The person who gave a disagreement thumbs down to this statement has his head in the sand. The sooner he faces reality the better. The sentiment has been there to a degree for a long time but it is now exploding.

There are nuances to anti-American sentiment. The type of anti-American-capitalism sentiment and general antipathy you express was not as large in the world as it is in your mind.

Sentiment against the orange baboon and the insidious fascism seizing hold of our government is different. We didn't just shoot ourselves in the foot; we amputated our feet. Feel free to gloat.

I think they made a math mistake - tariffs are based on the cost/value of the goods at import, not the final retail price.

I'm sorry but moron said something this stupid? Apple would never price an iPhone this high because no one would pay it, and Tim Cook isn't as insane or braindead as this "analyst," apparently.
Apple also isn’t going to compromise its margins

We don't do any trade with Russia because they're sanctioned. You can't tariff trade that doesn't exist.

We didn't tariff the Vatican either - does the Pope control the President?

Wrong.

U.S. total goods trade with Russia were an estimated $3.5 billion in 2024.
U.S. goods imports from Russia totaled $3.0 billion in 2024.

In the first eleven months of 2024, fertilizers were the most imported commodity from Russia to the US with a value of almost one billion US dollars, followed by non-ferrous metals and certain chemicals.

America is the consumer nation! Don't you get it? These people will eventually cave or their economies will turn to rubble.
