Then there is the whole pentile thing which may or may not apply to the iPhone. I have a Galaxy Tab S 8.4 which has a 359 DPI pentile display. But the actual effective DPI is 33% lower, and there is a strange graininess to the display. It is an inferior display to the iPad in terms of resolution and usability.

Not really sure what to make of this news..

There are OLEDs without pentile, thats mostly a samsung thing to boost specs.

I don't want OLED. My 6S plus screen is good enough and I prefer the longer lifespan.

So you will not be buying an iPhone with an OLED screen then you are saying?

As you will be moving away from Apple, are you considering yet which brand you will be changing to?

More vibrant colors, less eye-strain in the dark, and slightly more energy efficient due to the individual pixels shutting off when they're supposed to be the color black.

AMOLED is the way to go. LCD is just not as good.

Please can we not start bring facts into these discussions.
We all know here that AMOLED is rubbish as Apple don't offer it yet.

Just like small tablets and large phones are stupid rubbish ideas also.
Oh sorry, I mean they WERE rubbish ideas ;)

Why not toss in Liquid Metal 2018 to this rumour pile?
Liquidmetal has been used for some components of the iPhone since 2012. I guess the perpetual rumor is about the whole phone case using it at this point?

Hope this isn't true, or else that Apple finds a way to get around the shortcomings of these displays. Working at T-Mobile, I noticed there's burn-in on the Samsung Galaxy display phones because OLED displays basically act like plasmas.

Question: Will this help with the yellow tint?

Current OLED panel uniformity is worse than IPS uniformity. You can get brightness or temperature variances across the panel.

Just the cost of less practiced manufacturing processes. OLED will absolutely be the better tech in the long run due to its excellent contrast and color range, but newer tech always had manufacturing hurdles to deal with.

The note 5 demos at Best Buy all have burn-in as well, and I can spot then status bar on a white BG on my N4. It's been improving between generations but isn't solved yet. Probably not a huge issue for 1-2 years but beyond that expect to clearly see burned UI elements.

A lot of people complain that colours are too saturated on OLED to a point it looks artificial compared to LCD which is more neutral and natural.
That's my main gripe with current OLED panels. To me, the image looks cartoonish, with unnaturally oversaturated colors. But if this report is true, Apple has plenty of time to work out the kinks. I wouldn't be surprised if the switch was the result of their Apple Watch experiences, especially the animated backgrounds that would simply suck too much power on an iPhone. Also, OLED would make it possible to use an iPhone in nightstand mode. Currently, that's impossible because even at its dimmest, the iPhone display puts out too much light in a dark room.

I haven't owned a phone with an OLED screen, but from screens I have seen, the image produced just looks too fake for my liking. I honestly prefer the more natural LCD displays, they're not so highly “exaggerated.”

You do realize that the display image can be tweaked to reduce the saturation, right? OLEDs can be configured to look identical to an LCD display, since they have a wider color gamut and thus can "emulate" the look of a display with a lower gamut.

OLEDs do have their flaws, but this isn't one in the hands of competent engineers. I doubt Apple would release a phone with a lousy looking display.

Having a wider color gamut is a good thing; you can display a wider variety of images authentically.

I think the LCD on the iPad Pro is fantastic. This is coming from a Pioneer Kuro owner :)
Apple use different technology in their LCD display, and I am so hope if they went for OLED, it won't be the AMOLED that Samsung is using right now. The tech for better OLED is not ready yet.

I have my doubts that Apple will go to AMOLED touchscreens unless they can get guarantees of long battery life per charge and display longevity. A more likely possibility is IGZO LCD displays to keep the touchscreen reasonably thin.

If Apple can work out the issues with OLED and use a full RGB layout rather than a pentile pattern then it might be okay. I'm sceptical though... As it stands AMOLED displays have too many issues for me - the white always looks dirty, the colours look over saturated, and looking at most websites and documents (where there is a lot of white) uses too much power.

Someone will likely accuse me of having an Apple bias, but honestly most of my phones have been Android and I always preferred those devices with an IPS display.

As an aside I also cannot see the point in a higher resolution display than that of the 6S. It isn't possible to see individual pixels with normal vision in normal use, so a higher resolution just chews battery for no real world gain. I'm actually glad Apple haven't chased the specs in this area.
