Firmware 1.1.1 did nothing to help my iPhone. I saw no difference in regards to the issue at hand.

Is this still happening with current iPhones? I just ordered an iPhone off of apple.com, pretty damn worried that ill get a faulty screen.

I do have the problem...
Phone serial number: 7R7343xxxxx (week 34)
LCD Panel ID: 7455232

Called Apple on Saturday and the box with a "loaner" phone is coming today and they will try to "fix" my current phone

I received an 8 gb refurb yesterday. Week 34, screen 7455232. Firmware is 1.0.2 (and I'm not about to upgrade).

The screen looks great. On some of the screen tests, especially the Jay-Z cover test, the clarity does increase *slightly* if I tilt it back a little in portrait (for some reason, if I have the phone in landscape, tilting does nothing to improve it). I pushed the brightness all the way up, and if anything it looks better.

The screen might have the slightest of issues with negative blacks based on the Jay-Z test, but there are no dead pixels, it passed the other screen tests, and everything else is top notch. I'm certainly not about to start playing Russian roulette with my local apple store hoping to get a better one. Maybe if later on they admit there is an issue with my screen, I'll have it replaced-- but that's only once the dust settles and I know for sure the new screens are better.

I haven't compared it to a 5 series screen, so I guess I can't say for certain that it's every bit as good as those, but it looks pretty friggin' good!.

I'm hoping to hear that the firmware does fix the negative black issues. Come on guys, so did it help at all? So far I've read from only a few people with mixed results.

Not a lot of people on this board is doing the update ;) (if you know what I mean).

I would imagine Apple will fix it in the next firmware update, it seems to have worked on the Touch, but I think all that is - is the unit displays blacks as "grays" so it won't be as prevalent. Kind of a patch for a crappy screen...

Welcome to lower prices...

The 1.1.1 update fixes the Touch's screen. Anyone apply the 1.1.1 update to their phone and does it fix the screen as well?

No i started replying to this thread with 1.1.1. so the update doesnt help. You can tell that it's physical. The viewing angle is not right. You can't fix that with software.

the first one i returned for this issue came from apple.com a week ago. the apple store had good and bad ones on hand. the serial numbers don't seem to determine what's bad. It seems a little random

Was there a certain build week that had the issue that it can be narrowed down to?

Week 39 is definitely affected. Though all four of my bad screens have been 7455232, which is what I think was the problem.

1st post! .. My iPhone has this dreaded issue and I cannot take it anymore. But alas, my phone is unlocked! Is there anyway I can make it appear that my phone is *not* unlocked or restore it to activation state?

What can I do to get a replacement? Help me out guys!

Cheers,
Sam

P.S. I have that same 7455232 panel ....

Is there a way of knowing what screen # you have before going through the activation process?

You can do *3001#12345*# and I believe it was LCD information?

anything with panel ID 7455232 seems to be affected.

Just got phone #4 back today. Week 37, same issue with the negative black.

I'm tired of sending phones back and forth. I think I'm just going to wait a few weeks and try again.

iPhone #5 just arrived. It's brand new in the box (oddly, already powered on), and is serial #7R739. Screen ID 7455232.

Same negative screen issue.

Am calling Executive CS Rep. and will post back when I hear from her.

Since Apple doesn't seem to believe me or the various photos I've sent them, I decided to film the problem. Hopefully this shows the problem well enough. I'm sending it to my Apple reps as well.

Success!

I just got back from my local Apple store and I'm very happy. I showed them my month old iPhone with the negative black problem, and they replaced it immediately. I really didn't have to say anything. I was really surprised how easy it was to deal with them. Good luck to others who need their phones replaced.

I don't remember what week my old phone was (I think it was week 30 but I can't be sure), but I know it had a 7 series screen. My replacement is a week 33 and has the 5 series. It's soooooooooooo much better. I really could not be happier with the outcome. :D
