If you're comparing 2 or 3+ photos, why would you want or need a giant sidebar?

Yikes, it just gets worse.

i can tell you why: because this program is optimized for touchscreen.

and why is it optimized for touchscreen?

because apple THINKS their iOs way is the best way. and they forget, that an imac or mac book is NOT a touchscreen device!

this is actually quite scary to see, because obviously apple can't work out that they can not just compile an ios program to normal mac os x.

there is more evidence to this theory:

they force you to double click on a photo to go back. this is typical ipad usage, as an ipad has no esc button and you also only show pictures on the ipad. ESC is now "leaving the fullscreen mode".

what really surprises me also is that fullscreen modes were always considered as bad on the windows. nearly every program on the pc can be run in fullscreen but apple always refused to implement a fullscreen button. the green button behaves like it likes, some programs resize to some strange size, others to fullscreen. it was VERY confusing sometimes, but HEY- THIS IS APPLE! it can't be bad and it MUST be better than windows that way!

you just eat it, and don't think that it is bad. it is apple, so you "eat" it - no matter how unusable it is.

Hey, you just click the edit button again and the bar on the right goes away.

true. but also the 3 photos disappear. and they are what i want to see WITHOUT THE BAR on the right...

you seem not to have the program!!!

Thanks for the heads up. I just bought via the up-to-date program for £5.95. I won't install iPhoto unless they fix this.

can anyone who is also not happy with this step back write about this limitation and help bringing this message to apple? maybe it also helps that people complain with the feedback function within iphoto, but i fear that you could also print the email out and put it into the trashcan ;-(

"Apple giveth & apple taketh away" I see how that could be a big problem. Those who wish to keep the old iPhoto should just wait for the Mac store to open up, this way you can purchase only what apps you like from the iLife suite.

OP, so glad that you posted this information. I was about to install iLife '11 and at this point I will not be doing so. The problems mentioned here are dealbreakers for me! Like the OP, I use full screen mode (without any buttons or UI) to edit my photos. Losing this is a big deal.

Also, I sent feedback to Apple about this. I hope the rest of you do too!

This is ALL so true! Agree about touch screen, and to the rest, I always thought it was me who did not understand something about the color buttons, that, indeed behave as they want! For the life of mine, why cant we have (sorry to say this) windows-like kill/full screen/minimize/hide type buttons in the OSX, but thats all beyond the point when it comes to iPhoto 11. Lets leave feedback on iphoto.

Thank you for posting

I been using dSLR's since 2005 (Nikon D70, D80, D3100,waiting for D7000 to be in stock). We have a new mid 2010 iMac, and I was about to order the iPhoto 11.

The lack of full screen is definitely a program killer for many of us, who are not even professional photographers but only casual photographers. I also have read the Apple/communities/iphoto forums, and there are many posts about iPhoto 11 bugs and problems. I have not read about any significant improvements to the iPhoto program. Maybe it is time for Apple to break the suite and make each program a separate buy.

Any of you who have not upgraded, open iPhoto and double click on a picture. The photo becomes larger. Look at them and see that they are in focus. I usually delete all pictures which are not in focus. Now, put the photo's on full screen view and arrow R/L through them. You will see that several are not in sharp focus.

For us casual and non-casual photographers, image quality, focus, composition, lighting, exposure...etc... are important. Having full screen view IS a necessary feature. It's like buying a car from a manufacturer who switched power steering to non-power steering on a 2011 model.

As others have pointed out, the change in iPhoto 11 is Apple preparing for making future iMac's screens touch based.

To those who say, just buy Aperture, LR, Photoshop..etc...., most of us do not need that. We need a simple program that works--imports, organizes, allows basic editing adjustments.

It could be that they are planning for a touch-screen macbook! And even if they do, the proposed layout is idiotic... even if its a touch screen, I do want to go full screen, no stupid bars, zoom, edit, etc full screen. I can not believe they released this.

150% TRUE

Agree.. Agree.. Agree.. I just went online and wrote up a an email to the iPhoto feedback link (posted earlier in this thread).. What a disappointment - I will NOT be upgrading to iLife 11.. As I stated earlier, once uploading my pics I love to scroll through, picture by picture, in (real) full screen mode and edit (with the very nice transparent use it when you need it edit tool menu) and delete blurry shots when necessary..

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8B117 Safari/6531.22.7)

It should still be able to address up to 4gb as a 32 bit application (obviously it would never get all 4gigs, that's theoretical), and I can't really imagine anything iPhoto does requiring more than that.

I found out why the new, fancy "email templates" exist now: because they look swell on the ipad! Seriously. Try sending one to yourself: unless you have a smallish screen, like that on a ipad, you will find that these templates are pretty useless. Its all different with an iPad: on these your email templates look swell..... puke, but it is true.

I think you're talking about slide show ... full screen is there, the app simply hides the OS's bars and gives you a navigation bar of sorts. Remarkably, if you want a slideshow you can either click the SLIDESHOW icon on the botom or create one ... oh there it is ... full screen no bars ... slideshow. ;)

Edit: I feel bad that you're confused, here are the icons I reference:

fanboys: do you now understand what it is, or are you still in the "here is your button" mode? I am still wondering how could this crap see the light of day.

iLife 11 = waste of money

Have downgraded to iPhoto 09 for all the reasons listed by the OP. Thank goodness for Time Machine.

Hate iPhoto 11: how to go back to iPhoto 09?

After hesitating for awhile because of the risk of loosing edits/pics, I think I am finally ready to go back to 09. Could anyone please describe the safest way to get rid of the "upgraded" iPhoto 11 to go back to 09? I have the 09 disc... but am a bit lost as to uninstalling the so-called "upgrade". I do have a backup of the original pics stored on a separate drive, and i usually import pics into iPhoto from there. Is there an option to preserve the editing made in iPhoto?
Thanks a mill in advance!

The only way to preserve edits would be to go back to a recent iPhoto 09 library, then add any more recent photos manually. I had mine on a Time Machine back-up (along with iPhoto itself) so the restore of both was easy enough. Sorry if this doesn't help you. Good luck.

Thank you! I always practiced doubling up with saving pictures, meaning saving them elsewhere before, and importing from there. So, in order to go back, do i just trash the existing iPhoto and then reinstall from the earlier dvd?

'If it aint broke, don't try to fix it'.

I think that what warning this gives us all is not to upgrade just because an upgrade becomes available, how is it put? 'If it aint broke, don't try to fix it'.
I suffered a similar indignity with my iPad. Running the original Photo app, all my images were imported from the SD chips into nicely organised 'events' based on the date the photos WERE TAKEN! Geddit? Apparently Apple didn't when they brought out the 'upgrade' to 4.2 all my nicely ordered 'events' were suddenly trashed! What do we have now? Events ordered by the date they were imported into the iPad, how, like this:- 101IMPRT, 102IMPRT, 103IMPRT, 109IMPRT, etc. Now just how dumb, just how useless is that?
So sometimes Apple doesn't take a step forward, it takes two back.
end rant.

As I said, if you want to keep edits & albums, etc you need a full backup of your iphoto library from before you installed 11, as the library format is irreversibly changed. Not sure about DVD install, I guess that should work. Maybe you'll need to trash the iphoto 11 app first?

Please make sure your library is well backed up first. Seriously, time machine is the best thing.
