Ordered Finally!
It will be nice to be able to jog without my honkin' iPod (20 Gig)! Who needs a screen when working out, it's not like I ever look at the songs, I just can barely hit the button after a few miles anyways!
Freakin way to go Apple.

Will be ordering one for myself, one for mum and one for bro!
You may not get a screen but as someone else said on this thread..it is like your favourite radio station minus the ads and the rubbish DJ.

Wooho! I was right!! I said that 2GB was too big and that they needed a 512Mb model! :D I got a few things right lately - I think I'll quit my day job. :D
(Sound of slap on cheek and expression of pain)
"Yes, dear. No, it was just a joke dear."

;)

Hey, and battery life is up to THIRTY TWO hours with AAA's installed

PS And I'll be definitely buying at least one.

BTW Listening by shuffle only is just like listening to the radio (over which you have no control - except with the iPod Shuffle, you know there'll be only songs you do like (and no ads!)

iPod Shuffle - It's like your favorite radio station but without ads.

Screenless.. Yea ill pass on it too.

But on the bright side they could brand it as a 'physical' iPod. It would seem perfect to use if you were running, climbing, snowboarding, lifting, since it is extremely small and you wouldn't have to worry about scratching the screen/face. Also when you're using an iPod during a physical activity you tend to not skip tracks like you would normally do while just chillin.

Well I'll be getting one tonight once my friend tells me the HE education discount price - I suspect £90-£95 for the 1Gb one - the way I see it - it's an Apple Flash drive with a robust/basic iPod feature built in. Perfect for moving your files from your old PC to your new Mac Mini.

Also ordering iLife (didn't upgrade to iLIfe'04 so due an update) and iWork (Damn that looks a sweet productivity suite - shame about no Spreadsheet program, but I use Presentation & Word Processing the most)

Also, have made first steps at converting my parents to Mac Mini and my old flatmate is currently saving/begging/stealing to make up the few extra pound for one of those babies

Those last 2 were totally off toopic, but it's been such a great day for Apple products - I keep listening to the news half expecting a news story about this amazing line of new products!

Woohoo!!

Nice

This looks good.

I can understand why some would like a screen though, 240 songs is a lot to skip and listen out for the song you want, if your not quite sure where it is.

It would help out if you could load multiple playlists, and skip playlists not just songs. Maybe you can.

No FW aint much of a problem, with so few songs. Someone said it would be a problem for those without USB 2. Not sure it will, my son has a mini and can use USB, even though his mac is old and doesn't have USB 2, it's just slower.

Whilst this is good, it ain't as good or groundbreaking as the originals, but I'm sure it will do well, because it will allow those who want smaller units or maybe just don't have the cash for an original, to own a "trendy" ipod.

Personally I'm waiting for the 80 Gb ipod photo.

I just bought one from the Apple Store in San Francisco. Demand is so high that there is a employee standing at the door with cartons of the 512MB model* handing them out as people walk in, and instead of asking, "Do you want one?" he's asking, "How many do you want?" The line at every cashier is at least 15 people deep, and everyone is clutching the little green package—many are buying three or four.

*The 1GB in not in stock.

MPIO

It looks a lot like my MPIO FY200 which HAS a screen and a line in input to directly rip a CD and attach an external (pre-amp) mic to record concerts. I actually recorded a show with just the voice feature and it came out amazingly well.

I'll probably get one, though!

For what it's worth...

This is the pricepoint a lot of naysayers have been picking at, so with that I'd expect a rather successful launch for the product.

Checking out http://www.apple.com/ipodshuffle/shuffle.html and you can see that the name implies what's it suppose to do: shuffle. The Autofill does that well, and for people with large libraries and a few obscure or rarely listend to tracks, this is the iP to help 'em out on the way to work or school.

Simple (maybe too much so) but it is in simplicity that great design stands out. If the iTunes integration works as good as Jobs says, then this will be around for some time.

I understand why the iPod itself would be USB-only, but a little surprised there is no FireWire dock option. I don't know how many Mac users out there are still stuck at USB 1.0, but I'm guessing it's not a trivial number.

According to their website it will work with older USB ports...albeit slower.

Gross! No screen, freakin idiots, gosh!
Main selling points of ipod:
great user interface-gone
scroll wheel-gone
big space-gone
I want an iPod, not a usb flash mp3 player like everyone else!

I think it was smart that they held this for after xmas. There was tons of hype around the iPod and mini and it was their last chance to get the $ out of those willing to splurge and buy a larger capacity iPod, now they can let the laggards who will refuse to pay-up to use their xmas money to buy an easier to rationalize shuffle. This is the inexpensive way of finally getting in on the hype.

So what if it has no screen, do many of the thousands of CD players that have sold for years display the songs they are playing? These don't hold a ton of music, and are for portability & trend factor. Plus, these could also eat into the regular flash disk market for mobile folks, why get a regular usb flash drive sans mp3 if you can get this much more stylish conversation piece (even if it does cost more than a generic). I think it will help round out the Apple customer base, and increase iTMS sales and people will buy them for their kids and not care as much when they get stepped on or skateboarded over etc. And I love the green light above the wheel in the expanded photos section. Also, I'm pleased to see the new graphics extending across software and hardware!

First impression.

Thing is kinda long. If they chopped it down by .5 to 1 inch it would have been great. Looks nice. I think the price point will rock our worlds.

I agree, for a future generation it would be very cool if you could set like "bookmarks" in your 240 song list and by holding down the next button go to the next bookmark. That way you could have a playlist, and then a bookmark before an album, and then a bookmark before another playlist. A small LED could show which bookmark you're on by number.
I'm still happy with this release though! I have a third generation 10GBer, but I'm picking up a 512 MB one for school, running, camping, etc. No screen isn't that big of a loss for me - I love the whole push for shuffle, and Party Shuffle's what I use iTunes for the most anyways.

I actually preferred the mockup iPod shuffle that was about the size of a USB connector.

Still at about the size of a pack of gum, it's plenty small.

But a 50% markup for a flash card is a bit high. . . .

How do you come up with that? A (very) quick scan of USB jump drives at Best Buy revealed several 512MB one's that were priced the same or only a few bucks less than iPod shuffle.

Besides...it isn't a flash card...it is an iPod (and can also be used as a USB jump drive).

Anybody else note the 6-8% drop in Apple stock price today?

Typical after an event like. Mostly because Apple didn't introduce the iFloat(tm) personal anti-gravity device.

It will come back.

And if the single anecdotal report earlier in this thread is any indication...these are already selling like hotcakes.

Ordered my 512mb right when the store opened.

Took about ten tries, but I got it. Should arrive in a week.

This is perfect for me - my iPod and I have been through 9 marathons and a couple thousands miles of running together. It's been a pain in the butt lugging it around.

This thing this the answer to my prayers.

Can't wait. 12 freaking hours of battery life?

I can't uncerstand why anyone would complain about this one. They are goingn to destroy Creative.

Yeah, I'm one of those poor USB 1.0 saps. Hopefully someone will come up with a firewire dock for it soon...

The one problem with that is that you would then only be holding it between your fingers. The way they made it allows you to hold it between your ring/pinky fingers and press the buttons without worrying about dropping it

Then buy an iPod and stop your non-sense.

Please, read before posting

Yea! Like me!

I'm a little confused, nothing from the keynote or Apple's website suggests to me that this guy is USB2 only. I think we'd all agree that moving a gigs worth of music over USB would be time consuming, but it's certainly possible.

Is there such thing as a Firewire->USB2 adapter?

What's the deal?

I was one of those saying that iPod without Display sucked... well, having an explanation behind iPod Shuffle, i.e., that alot of people use Shuffle on their iPods anyway.. I think its a pretty good idea. Also a very good price too.

The integration between shuffle and iTunes seems pretty good - ensures all available allocated space is used.

Shuffle should do well.

Anyone care to create the iPod Shuffle dance?!

This will be usefull for all iPods users...

From TMO talking about the iPod shuffle:

"You can also tell iTunes to automatically convert higher bit rate songs to 128 kbps AAC when it copies them to the iPod shuffle, enabling you to squeeze more songs onto the device."

That is cool. It seems to do the conversion on the fly.
