Dont' mind no display, like the size, battery life, and storage size, but I hope that someone writes a hack that will allow it to download and play *in order* songs from an iTunes playlist so if you want a specific structure for the day you can have it. For some of us who also listen to classical music (multi-movement works) the ability to keep those movements in order would be helpful--so Mozart doesn't get shuffled with Schwanter. (though that might be interesting)

Turn it over and turn shufle off

Do I like it, no. Personally I think it's ugly, small, freakishly screenless, and generally pointless. That said, I am confident that it will sell extremely well.

Anybody else note the 6-8% drop in Apple stock price today?

Yes I sure did .Cost me almost $6000 in dropped value todaya s my stock and options suffered.. BUT listen to the keynote .... 4.5 M iPods will bring in 1.2 B$ and iMac G5 # 1 seller(from 50,000 to over 250,000 units) will mean Apple will ship more than 1 M computers for the first time in YEARS. If you add up the numbers conservatively for the holiday quarter expect revenue from Apple to be at $3.4B plus.... Thursday will be the key day for Apple stock.

Looking forward to Thursday's rally.

The price point is about what I expected (I was thinking $149 for the 1GB and $199 for a 2GB).

I am not dissapointed about the lack of a screen. What I am dissappointed about is the lack of album or folder modes.

It would be neat if the Shuffle could use a synthesized voice (generated by iTunes) to tell you what album you have selected. You could quickly browse through the 20 or so albums that the 1GB Shuffle could hold.

This is by far one of the best products Apple has ever made. The mp3 market will now be totally dominated by Apple.

I predict another market that is gonna go crazy and thats coloured shoe strings. Yeah I know it sounds crazy, but the main buyers for the shuffle will be young people. I can just see them using bright coloured shoe strings as lanyards instead of the white one that comes with the shuffle as in time it will get pretty dirty.

The brighter the better and more individual it will be. Kids are gonna take to this like ducks to water. I can see a huge lanyard market opening up for this product.

man, i just got an iPod armband for christmas to work out with, and this thing was basically made for workouts... looks like i'll have a backup :)

it will be very interesting to see how this effects sales of the mini. for $50 more than the mini, you can get a $300 4G iPod. I mean, to me, you either need the 20 GB or more, or you only need 512MB/1GB. I don't see the room for a 4 GB option.

Although, that makes it rather obvious why they didn't give the iPod Shuffle a screen, because that would completley destroy sales of the mini iPod. just like the mac mini, this release was all about the bare minimum at the lowest possible price point, going after people who are moving to apple, not people who already own systems.

these things are going to sell like crazy.

As for the Apple stock.... it dropped 6-8% ?!

The stock dropped because the analysts valued the stock based on the anticipated upgrades. Now that the news are out, people are selling. Not because they are disappointed with the release news but because this is how the financial markets work. Buy on the rumor, sell with news being out.

I completely agree with you. Although I'd love to get one of these anyhow. It's perfect for jogging. Maybe in a future release... although I doubt that the synthesized voice will appear (though it's a cool idea!) Actually, I guess it wouldn't be that hard. Or there could just be an extra pair of buttons for 'album forward' and 'album back'.

This iPod is awesome, I bought a 1GB today. This will be great for when I work out. I think I'm going to get one of the 512MB for my 6 year old nephew for his birthday, he's got some SpongeBob, Mozart, and other children's music on the iMac I got him. It's simple enough for anybody to use.

I know I'm going to love this thing, screen or no screen. I also ordered iLife '05 and iWork Academic Edition today. My girlfriend threatened to choke me if I even attempted to buy a Mac Mini, apparently I have enough computers already. ;o{

$199? Where did that come from? According to the Apple store the 1 GB iPod Shuffle is going for $149.

Anyway my birthday is Friday and I have been holding out on the iPod. It looks like I will be heading down to the Grove in LA to pick one up. Oh and the student discount makes it $139 which isn't bad. I am not too worried about the lack of a screen since I will be listening to music and not watching it.

Nice job Apple........

Grr.. for some twisted reason there is no student discount on it here in Norway!!

I'm with you. I'm extremely disappointed. I was waiting for the Milano cookie-looking flash player that was shown on the rumor sites. I was hoping it would have a display too. Or, at the very least, a voice synthesized feature where you press a button and it tells you what song is playing/about to be played. (I wanted 2GB too.)

Years ago, I had a flash player that had a display, but it did not display the name of the song. Instead, all it displayed was the track number. This was incredibly frustrating. I could never tell what was on the player unless I hooked it up to a computer and I could never easily skip to the song I wanted to hear because you had to wait for every song to start. I hated the thing and soon gave it away.

So, I know I won't like the iPod Shuffle.

But, just because I won't buy one doesn't mean that others won't. And when Apple adds a screen to this player next year, everyone who bought one this year will probably go out and buy a new one. Brilliant! ;)

Sell high, buy low. People are just cashing in on months of growth. Not to be worried, this is a good thing for investors just as long as it doesn't get too low.

Hey if that's true, then I take it all back. But it seemed to me that it would take more than that over USB 1.0, which is famously slow as molasses.

This may have already been said, but it could take 15 minutes to transfer 512MB of data over USB 1, and make that 30 minutes for the 1GB iPod shuffle. In theory it should be less than that, but in practice I think those numbers will be about right. So, with only USB 1 you'll be waiting a good while to transfer your music. USB 2.0 could do the same thing in under one minute, if the flash memory is fast enough (which I suspect it may not be). Thus, even with USB 2.0 expect it to be several minutes to completely update your 1GB iPod shuffle.

While I'm at it, I did a pretty good with my post last night concerning the initial iPod shuffle rumors. I said the iPod shuffle name sounded just right and that given the cost cutting (no display, few buttons) they could also offer a 512MB model for $99.

From TMO talking about the iPod shuffle:

"You can also tell iTunes to automatically convert higher bit rate songs to 128 kbps AAC when it copies them to the iPod shuffle, enabling you to squeeze more songs onto the device."

That is cool. It seems to do the conversion on the fly.

Hey I was seriously hedging my bets that Apple would introduce AACplus, so iTunes could convert songs at 64Kbps to the iPod shuffle, thus fitting 200% more songs. Since the shuffle is used for jogging, exercising, etc, a slightly lower fidelity music would be fine.

I got there at noon, and while there were still lines from the back of the store to the entrance on both sides of the stairs, they were all out.

I just bought one from the Apple Store in San Francisco. Demand is so high that there is a employee standing at the door with cartons of the 512MB model* handing them out as people walk in, and instead of asking, "Do you want one?" he's asking, "How many do you want?" The line at every cashier is at least 15 people deep, and everyone is clutching the little green package—many are buying three or four.

*The 1GB in not in stock.

No screen woes

Jobs said in the keynote that there were 400 accessories for the iPod. What makes you think people are not gonna make em for the shuffle? I can see somebody making an accessory to give the shuffle a screen.

Pay extra for third party screens? You might as well just pick up a mini.

Besides, an expensive screen and jogwheel to flip through 120 songs on the 512MB shuffle? HAHA.

an accessory to give it a screen would, in conjunction with the cost of the shuffle, cost just as much as the iPod mini, be uglier than the mini, and have 1/8 or 1/4 the storage space of the mini.

i will go on the record and say that if someone actually creates an external display screen for the shuffle, i will go to the apple store and buy every one they have in stock to support their monetary black hole of an idea.

Darn. No Edu discount on the iPod shuffle.

Was hoping to knock it down to about $89 :D

I just ordered mine online and saved a whole $1 with my student discount from the Canadian apple store! Awesome! ($128 instead of $129CDN for the 512MB) Now to return that 256MB USB memory key I bought the other day from Futureshop, anything I can do to give them as little of my money as possible and the most to Apple.

Ordered my 512mb right when the store opened.

Took about ten tries, but I got it. Should arrive in a week.

This is perfect for me - my iPod and I have been through 9 marathons and a couple thousands miles of running together. It's been a pain in the butt lugging it around.

This thing this the answer to my prayers.

Can't wait. 12 freaking hours of battery life?

I can't uncerstand why anyone would complain about this one. They are goingn to destroy Creative.

"Lugging" an iPod? Hehehe, good one.

Main selling points of ipod:

I want an iPod, not a usb flash mp3 player like everyone else!
Then buy an iPod, doofus. Why the hell to people have to knock a new product just because it's not exactly what they need. Do I need to remind you how many people said the original iPod was dumb and way overpriced and would never fly? Yeah, they sold 4.5 million of them in the last three months. I was skeptical of the Shuffle at first but now I think it's downright genius. $99 and it doubles as a USB2 data drive? I'll be getting one ASAP.

Does anyone know the availability of these in Apple Retail Stores?

I'm in Chicago, and would love to pop into the Michigan Avenue store tomorrow and pick one up.
