Great for the car

Up until now, my choices for music in the car were limited to commercial radio, or remembering to bring along my 20GB iPod (and then remembering to remove or conceal it once I was done driving). Not to mention that car CD changers never appealed to me. But now I can have this cheap little $99 device that holds 10-12 albums on it and that I won't mind keeping permanently in the car (even in plain view if I forget -- the incentive to steal these won't be nearly as great as with a "real" iPod).

The only thing missing is the ability to choose and album, but whatever. This is close enough, and with all the iPod/car integration coming into fruition recently, I wouldn't be surprised if someone came out with an iPod Shuffle car jack with a full screen to jump from album to album. And if this never happened, I still wouldn't be disappointed.

This never occurred to me before I read your post, but it seems like Apple has just revolutionized CD changers for cars as we know it, with a $99 dollar device. I'll bet we'll see a USB port on these new "iPod compatible" cd players to plug in a Shuffle, and just like dloomer said, the screen could work hand in hand with the shuffle. Pure genius! Good work sir.

I was just at the Apple Store here in Chicago on Michigan Avenue, and they didn't have a single iPod shuffle, or Mac mini, not even a display model of either! They also didn't even have posters or Ads showing either of the two!

I asked them when they were expecting some iPod shuffs to arrive, and they didn't know. Same for Mac mini.

As a sidenote, I overheard a sales guy talking a woman out of a PowerBook in favour of an iBook. His reason? "Well, the PowerBooks haven't been updated in a while, but the iBooks recently were. They're the better buy..." What's that about? A salesman being honest and talking a customer who wants to spend more into spending less? Weird.

Apple actually trains them this way. The Apple stores are of exceptional quality

iPod Schmipod.

After having to press the "next" button 120 times to get to the song you want, you'll be throwing it "in a top drawer" never to be used again. Remember how Steve dismissed Flash players in this way?

Of course my hand was twitching on the credit card just like everyone else, but after tearing myself out of the RDF* I'm starting to see some sense.

Still, if I was in the market for a USB key drive, I'd definitely rather bag an Apple-branded one! (sends email to boss demanding a 1GB model :D).

The shuffle reminds me of a home pregnancy test. Heh. I'm not sure about the shuffle idea though. I personally don't shuffle my songs on my iPod. However, I'm glad the prices are reasonable and I'm hoping it will be a huge hit for Apple.. iPod Shuffle owners, congrats!

Oh, seriously? Are you trying to tell us you got no audio CDs? Nothing at all in iTunes?

Saying it would cost you extra to "fill it up" is as smart as saying the Mac mini costs as much as the iMac G5 because you "need" an expensive LCD display to go with it.

That's not what I was saying. I was trying to illustrate the point that it is not like a radio because you have to pay for the content on it (one way or another).

Is it me, or does there seem to be no edu discount in the UK for either the 512mb or 1gb?

And what's this about no charger? Is it possible to charge via the USB socket? And if not, what do I buy to go with it - shuffle dock or something else?

I think it'll make a great partner for my new iMac G5. At the moment I have no way of listening to my music on the way to school - my (now ex-ish) fiance has custody of the iPod.

Gross! No screen, freakin idiots, gosh!
Main selling points of ipod:
great user interface-gone
scroll wheel-gone
big space-gone
I want an iPod, not a usb flash mp3 player like everyone else!

Then Buy an Ipod, they have not been discontinued.... ???

Different Item, different price, different market!

What is it with people? What possesses someone to see something, (Mac Mini and this Ipod Shuffle) which has 90% of the useability of an existing item, at 30% of the price, and bitch about it's lack of being the same as what they already have?

I would love to see you guys shop for a car:

Pulls in chevy dealer:

Mildly Retarded Customer: Wow, this 9K Aveo sure is nice, but salesperson, It does not have the features on the 30k Lexus up the street...... Can you explain this?

Salesperson: HAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHA

I mean, wtf is wrong with you people!

iPod Shuffle Ad Song

Does anyone know what the song is that was on the iPod Shuffle Ad? I downloaded the iPS ad just to listen to the music on it.

This will be great for working out. I rarely look at the screen anyway. My iPod is mostly in shuffle mode and with only about 100 to 200 songs, it wont be too hard to find a particularly song. So I guess I'll get one next month.

Thanks.

nevermind..I'll go ahead and answer my own question. It's called "Jerk It Out" by Caesars. Check it out on iTunes, if you haven't already.

Difference being, these are supposed te be random and are marketed as such (hence the lack of screen preventing you from easily finding that song), people with the other flash players were never probably told this.
I wasn't when years ago I had a 128meg creative muvo which had no screen and was smaller than the ipod shuffle.

I have to agree with BillHarrison. Seems that everyone want´s their dreams to come true: Fully spec´d hardware to minimum price. Guess what, that´s what it is: dreams.
The new iPod fits me perfectly as I just bought a 20G to my girlfriend and then wanted one for my self, but couldn´t justify the price. Thanks to Steve and his Shuffel I now can. (and my girlfriend won´t object) Great :D

Well, technically...;)

There's no education discount in the UK, at least not yet. It sucks - it'd probably go down to about £90 for the 1GB, which would justify getting an external charger ;) You need to charge it via the USB port unless you want to get a regular-iPod style power adaptor (£20).

u guys complaining about the screen really miss the point. after watching the keynot I'm sold! having 120 songs - why bother having a small screen!? i'm getting one - the 512 MB. for it's purpose 512 is enough - around 10 hours of music! i can even bring this for longer trips...i don't really need my 60 GB of itunes music when going skiing for a week - right!

:)

anyhow...eventually I'll have a shuffle and a regular ipod i guess ;)

hands up for apple!

I think the iPod shuffle will be a hit!

Really in my opinion the iPod shuffle is great. I run track and X-country and music is an inspiration to make me run more. With the iPod shuffle you don't have to worry about losing it (because it comes with a free lanyard). At first I thought that an mp3 player without a screen would be useless, but the more I thought about it I realized the less amount of parts it has the less you have to worry about it breaking. I also want to take something to school that I can use and easily hide in my backpack. I already tried to convince my mom to let me buy one off the net but it didn't work (so I'll just have to ask her if I can buy a "usb pocket drive"). Really I believe that this mp3 player is going to be a hit, and I'm going to pick one up as soon as I can... :)

Here in Sweden, they are called Caesar's Palace, but I guess they have to use the name Caesars in the States due to the casino's trademark or something like it.

"Seems that everyone want´s their dreams to come true: Fully spec´d hardware to minimum price."

Not at all. If it had a screen, yet no FM, no line in, no yada yada, it'd be an order of magnitude more useful.

A 120 song player is going to be a pain to use if you want to find a song. The way people actually listen to music is not "shuffle always". People have workout playlists coordinated with warmup, cooldown, intensity, etc. People have playlists for commute that remind them where they are in the commute.

Shuffle is fine. It's a good feature.

See my post above for a brain-dead UI using a screen that solves many of the problems with this Shuffle unit from away.

They will still sell millions of these, I've no doubt. But they could be selling millions more if they offered a model with a screen. $20 more at retail would do it. ShufflePro, the wait begins.

You can load the shuffle anyway you want, and most people aren't going to be looking for a song on this thing. That's the whole point.

I'll be loading up my music for my long training runs the night before and I'll know exactly what will be playing. I've run 9 marathons and a couple of thousand miles with my trusty iPod on my right arm.

I won't miss it a bit - as long as the sound quality and volume are adequate. That is my only worry right now.

Might I point out the fact that iPod shuffle is indeed not innovative in any way?

I have always seen Apple as a company which gives its own products, hardware or software, the Apple touch of innovation and therefore the "Apple experience".

Innovation has come in the form of the click-wheel, interface design, among others.

However, the iPod shuffle is devoid of any innovative features.

It even appears to be a step backwards in innovation (considering the norm that all digital music players are expected to have a display of some description).

I think it's this innovation disparity between the iPod shuffle and the rest of Apple's products that really stands out.

Okay.

Just got off the phone with someone @ the Apple Store on Michigan Avenue, and they said they aren't expecting any iPod shuffs until January 22, when iLife '05, iWork, and Mac mini arrive.

Bummer.

edit: But then he said I should keep trying back next week just in case they arrive early, so...I dunno.
