 what colour is the iPod mini in that photo?

Good call!

That is either a really really dark room with terrible shadows and a place that no self-respecting photographer would shoot in or... it's a purple iPod Mini!

Which means that the updates must be on their way...

Which SUCKS because the originals only become available outside the US next Friday!!!

[EDIT] It could also be one of the new 'coloured' 4g iPods, but given the aluminium finish and white scroll wheel, it probably is a Mini...

Wired headphones always seems so barbaric to me.

I also hate how the wires get kinks and twists in them...instead of just laying nicely. There has to be a more elegant solution. I like those old fashioned cloth covered wires, if you know what I mean, ... they lay nice. Can't clean them though. And they are thick.

i'm glad they appear to be sticking to the simplicity of a basic music player, none of that movie stuff. even a color screen seems superfluous, not to mention battery draining. good. people talking about movie capability and color touchscreens make the iPod sound too much like a PDA. i don't think that's such a good idea.

this info about the amplifiers (or maybe even the digital analog converters?) being top notch is news to me. and i aggree those are the parts where money and battery power is well spent. now i'm starting to formulate a strategy on how i'm going to use lossless audio throughout my library and balance capacity with quality, so i'm all for the rumored 60Gb drive. while sony is advertising 20,000 songs on their 20Gb player or something like that at some low crappy bit rate, apple is going for quality above all, in both software and hardware. thumbs up for apple. i haven't got an iPod yet but it's becoming more and more likely.

I am really curious what this is going to turn out to be. On the downside of things, it could just be a redesigned button/scroll wheel w/ no backlit buttons (like the mini) and a redesigned interface that is all in a slightly smaller package. But if Apple is smart they will put in a way better battery life, airtunes support, really cool backlit, an open iPod OS for other developers to add programs to it, and awesome new features that only Apple could think of. Then people could buy one with their really cool NEW iMac G5! :)

I think the new click-wheel will have a backlight. I think that'd make the grey wheel look a lot cooler. Hopefully.

I actually think its just a pink mini in low light. The shade of the pink minis varies quite a bit.

Currently there is no "Music" function on the iPod. Under "Extras" you can go to "Notes", "Contacts", etc., but having a specific reason for going to "Music" hints that there may be other media options to choose from.... say "Photos".

This is may be a software update, but a hardware change to the screen might aloow viewing of pictures (small) from iPhoto.

I can almost guarantee that if there is ever a wi-fi iPod, that it is going to be an add-on like the sound recorder. Considering only a small amount of iPod users would use the wi-fi capabilities, why make everyone pay for it?

Now for the people who actually do want wi-fi abilities, they'd rather have it just be built in. So it kinda sucks. Leaves Apple in a hard place.

Reading some of these comments is like watching a newscaster cover breaking news. They try to make five minutes worth of news turn into an hour, which leads to tons of speculation. Some of you guys have a wild imagination!

Oh, but it is fun to speculate. Personally, just give me longer battery life; then I'll feel that I made the right decision by selling my 3g 40gig for a 4g 40gig.

I want that color! Is that a mini or the new 4G? That's want I've been wanting, I bigger iPod mini with at least 20GB and different colors!

crossing fingers .... I never really look forward to mondays, but this time I am.

I'm ready for a new iPod that holds more than the 20GB mine holds now. This is incredibly welcome news. I think we all saw the clickwheel coming in the 4G iPods. I wonder if there isn't Airport technology crammed into the little body that maybe the firmware will support some sort of "wireless module" that would plug into the docking port in a way similar to the iTrip (but on the bottom). This way it could interact with Airport Express. With the recent release of AE, Apple must have some plan for making these two hot products work together.

And is it me, or is the new iPod quite a bit smaller than the old one...? (shorter...?).

I hope these new iPods be part of the "Cram n Jam" educational promotion Apple has going on right now! (I'm assuming they will be).

battery life

with the new ipod so thin, i don't see the battery life gettin any better. lol, i just bought my 15 gb two weeks ago. damn, shoulda waited....

stagmeister: you should give everyone a copy of that script and everyone put in a different range of numbers, we could have the artivcle in to time. haha,

anywase on another, and somewat funny not, i dont think anyone has commenter on the battery icon in the top corner of the newsweek cover. in the high res it looks to me like it isnt full, which i find funny and quite ironic becuase most people are hoping for more battery life, that ontop of the fact that one person mentioned shuffle songs was on there becuase it uses up more battery life and was a clever way to clue that there is infact improved battery life

and finally, for those of you who have been commenting about that fact that the only things in the main menu are music, shuffle, backlight extras and such and the fact that there doesnt seem to be any line in or video out or ne thing like that, remmeber that it is most likely their objective to show very little of the ipods new features on the cover sas to get u to need to buy and read the magazine and the article, this they dont show u the dimensions on the cover, nor the top bottom or back ofthe ipod for colour or inputes, and it appears to have the bear minimum in terms of the menu items on the menu so that people dont know what is on the new ipod untill they see the article.

anywase, cant wait to see the features and buy one

just my 2 cents
