I'll be the first to admit that this is a little bit of silly deduction...

Have a look at the way Steve is holding the 4g iPod in the cover... I tried holding my 3g 40GB like that and found that my thumb and forefinger were split much further.

So it might seem that either:

a) the 4g iPod will be noticeably smaller in width at least; and/or
b) Steve has gi-normous hands.

Just a thought ;)

Is it just me, or does anyone else think these photos look fake? The headphones look painted in, as does the ipod over steve's face. The type is of terribly low resolution, and the edges between the hand and ipod look very blurry and false. The screen is also of a very low resolution compared with the photo of steve and the hand.

Either this is a very rough mock-up, or i'm going on the record as saying i don't buy it...

nah, i don't think it is fake... too well done... never seen a pic of SJ like that before... it's on Newsweek's site!! all these things point to it being real to me

Are you kidding?

It'd be a bit tough to fake an MSNBC web address.

And those pictures don't look fake at all.

The iPod screen is obviously Photoshopped/airbrushed to make everything readable.

Let the photoshop contest begin right here and now.

More features than we might think

Well there we have the 4th gen-- mini scroll wheel on marginally thinner ipod. No video, no wireless (probably).

Wait a second, what is this... The new ipod starts with "MUSIC" vs "BROWSE" or "PLAYLISTS"... could it be that there is more than just "MUSIC" as an option?

Also, with magazine publications there could always be mods before publication...

nope, the pics look real to me. the fuzziness is the "aura" from the ipod, come on guys ;)

okay, you've got me looking at the picture on a really high zoom now...

and it looks like the part of the picture where the headphones cable goes behind the iPod at the corner looks fake. but you gotta remember, it's newsweek, i'm sure they don't have the best people in the world taking pictures.

Dude, it's on the Newsweek/MSN server and has supplementary photos and a whole lot of evidence (if you can call the ThinkSecret rumour that the new iPods will be released on Monday via a 'different means' than usual) to support it...

I would think it highly unlikely that it's a fake. The resolution issues are to be expected since someone has to create the photo in the first place for a magazine cover (ie a lot of Photoshopping) and then webify it...

But much respect to you if you are right. I still think that's unlikely ;)

Has no one realised this: since the menu buttons need to light up somehow when the backlight is on, maybe the whole wheel glows green or orange.

That would like some kind of awesome.

Bestbuy seems to have just sold out of their 3rd Generation iPod. I have been looking to buy a 20GB for the past 2 weeks or so, now I'm going to wait and see the prices of 4th Gen.

hahahaha, nice deduction

Aluminum :(

Hi, first time poster... don't own a Mac yet but hope to when a more powerful PowerBook 12" comes out :)

As for iPods, I've been holding out, and was about to get a Mini... but I think I'll wait for this.... color doesn't matter much to me, I just hope that the new iPods don't smudge like the old ones do :(

hopefully... Music>Airtunes. !!! please?

I just hope they come in capacities of up to 60gb. At present, my iTunes library is 47.39 gb. An iPod that could hold ALL of it would be nice :)

welcome to macrumors and the brighter side of computing!!

good luck on your adventure.

do you all really think that if the iPod is smaller, that they could cram a wireless antenna into the iPod and allow to broadcast over Airtunes?

OLED?

in response to the people asking about whether this screen could be an OLED screen... the answer is no...

in an OLED screen, there is no use for a backlight as it is the individual pixels that light up.

therefore, you'd have black screen with lit up words... not black writing intercepting light to create the illusion of text.

also, on a nother note. Sony was suppose to be developing 300,000 of these things by the end of this year for use in their Digital camera's and other small devices with a screen > or = 2"... however, sony have pushed back their projections for this technology to 2005, due to logevity problems... so with these facts in tow, i highly doubt that these iPods have OLED screens...

there is no doubt that the technology is there and the appropriate minturisation, however, i just don't really see apple doing this...

I doubt Steve Jobs will actually get pissed because of this "leak". I mean, two days? I doubt two days will impact sales -- and if they did, by the time their order processed they could have cancelled it and ordered the fourth gen iPod.

Plus only a small percentage frequent the rumor forums. So really, what does he have to worry about?

By the way, that grey-ish click-wheel looks ugly. Give me that in white.

Hey Jeffbax, to echo iChan, welcome...

How much more powerful do you want the 12" Powerbook to be? It already holds a candle easily to the 15" - I reckon it's an awesome buy at the moment, maximum portability and superb performance. But anyway, good luck when you do make the plunge.

What do you mean by smudging iPods? :)

There is something creepy about that Newsweek cover photo... if you look at Steve Jobs facial hair, notice he has weird discoloration round the moustache area.... it looks like he has a Hitler moustache!

what i meant was that apple (as well as sony) are experimenting with oled tech, and will probably use it at some point in theyre devices. as you have pointed out, these ipods dont have oled, and probably not color screens :(
