:/ im not too excicted....YET. im REALLY REALLY hopin that apple increased battery life to like 16+ hrs, because that is the only thing other players can use against apple. i was hoping for a color screen, apple probably is experimenting with oled or something more advanced, so it might take a while. that would be SWEET to have a touch sensitive screen across the whole face, kinda like a PDA. meh, a guy can dream.
well, whatever features the new one has, im getting a low end one. ive been waiting for about a week for 4gs to come out, and here they are. i might get 5gb more for free, they probably will drop the 15gb so ill get a 20 :D
EDIT: i dont really think the 4g's look to good. it just seems naked without the buttons. i didnt think the 3g's looked good when they came out, and now i like them so maybe my new 4g will grow on me :)
mmmm....clickwheel :D

I bet that the screen is color, but it only switches to color to show album art (and photos??). What's the point of having a color main menu? I think it's pretty sexy. The four buttons never did as much for me as the buttons around the wheel.

the advantage of a shuffle option is you can listen to albums in order, and use the shuffle option when you want to listen to your entire library on random

the shuffle was always there...

well, ever since 3g anyway IIRC

secondly, in my opinion, an evolution of a product like iPod is hardly in the same league as a totally new form factor iMac.
Duff-Man says...actually I do agree with that statement. What I was getting at was Steve's penchant for holding a grudge when he gets crossed - he gave the interview to Newsweek and showed off a new iPod - not with Time magazine because they leaked it early before....oh yeah!

They were able to make the iPod thinner because the drive is now embedded right into the circuit board rather then simply being dropped into the shell and attached with a bulky ribbon connector. Even though it is thinner, there still should be enough room for the same size battery. That battery can have a couple of hours more charge to it if they use a different version. Several replacement batteries available do hold longer charges. The battery issue is for most people a non-issue. If it was and Dell and other players with supposedly longer battery life would be selling better. But, guess what, they're not.

how'd ya know? about the embedded HD I mean... I don't see how this would save sooo much space... as the ribbon cables are paper-thin. but i digress

How do you know this???

hey, good idea!!!
I have hope again!!! :)
my friends are gunna be so jealous...lol

With the possibilty of the HD being attached to the chip, could apple stopped you from replacing the battery yourself?

I guess I would like 4G more if the wheel was white with the button imprints grey, rather than vice-versa.

I'm thinking the wheel is grey so that it will also work with the hp corpse-blue color. That way the only thing that needs to be different for the hp version is the plastic shell.

Maybe The Shuffel is compatable with airtunes.... for example when the iPod is on and is in the range of a wireless network iTunes will see it.

If the person using airtunes wishes to send you the songs hes listening to you just accept it on the iPod menu and there. You get wireless streamed music in your pocket.

I can already see it.

When will it be available on the store? Overseas?

Looking good - my 40GB has just been sold and the money is in the bank, so I am loving it!

I wonder when it's going to be available for order? In the US and overseas (Australia in particular)? The 40GB updates were here within a week, as were the eMac revisions (and the Powerbook revisions weren't that delayed either). Yet the Minis took 5 months officially to become 'available' here. I wonder if it will be the same for the 4g iPods? Will be interesting to see what happens to the stores just prior to the publication of Newsweek... I highly doubt they'd be plastering an item that they don't yet offer for sale all over such a huge publication (yes, I know, iMac G4...)...

Also, an aside, Jeffgarden you are a dude! Remarkable how impossible it is to find people who will admit they are Chris Cornell fans, even less so people who think his claim to fame is singing for Audioslave. And further less those who are Apple fans too! Nice website!

Just for the record, the reason the iPod has the worst battery life is because it has the most powerful and best sounding amplifier built-in. The iPod is the best sounding mp3 player period, and the batteries do die faster because of it.

my brother had a first gen iPod that he lost, I found it but never told him, but then my sister took it from me and broke it from misuse... I'm planing to have my brother buy a a 4G iPod so I can find it ;)

Two More Pictures from the Article

Here are two more pictures from the Newsweek article:

Hey, do you have links for those other pics?

And has anyone managed to dig up the actual article?

The Newsweek eds will be licking their lips ;)

my hopes: better battery, line in for recording! :)

Battery life is a given... recording? I'd hope that Steve wouldn't clutter the iPod's UI and design with these new whiz-bang features, ;) that in my opinion would only take away from and not add too the concept thats made the iPod and iPod Mini so successful.

Click-Wheel

Is it just me or does the click-wheel on the high res. iPod look like felt or some soft fabric...

This better be a major revision or I'll be very upset after selling my iPod on eBay.

sorry to burst your bubble... the rio karma already streams music...albeit not wirelessly.

i can totally vouch for what you are saying... the chips come from a company in Scotland called Wolfson Microelectronics that I have invested in so I am pretty familiar with their work... their chips are really high-end, so contribute to eating more battery power, like you said.

Is it just me, or does anyone else think these photos look fake? The headphones look painted in, as does the ipod over steve's face. The type is of terribly low resolution, and the edges between the hand and ipod look very blurry and false. The screen is also of a very low resolution compared with the photo of steve and the hand.

Either this is a very rough mock-up, or i'm going on the record as saying i don't buy it...

I Agree, the purity of the focus on music is what is really appealing about the iPods. however, you can't have too many important integrated peripheral features... these shouldn't detract from the main function, but should enhance an already stellar package and possible give it another attraction for potential customers.

let's look on the bright side...

if jobs has the balls to put 'shuffle songs' on the main menu, then that must mean the battery life is better since it's common knowledge that shuffle drains the iPod battery like hell...
