Hm, the iPod touch only has an A4 chip in and the iPad 3 is rumored to have an A6 chip. The Touch is getting behind :(

Welcome to the future of the iPod. Apple are intentionally crippling the iPod touch in order to push people towards the iPhone.

About 3-5 years ago the iPod touch was a great device but today in the era of facebook, youtube, twitter and spotify the iPod touch is a dumb device that doesn't have internet connectivity on the go. Further more the product is having reduced appeal to many people who already own a smartphone.

Smartphone adoption is sky rocketing and its only a matter of years before everyone has a smartphone with a large display. Android smartphone will soon be down to the price of an iPod touch, which will shrink the market for MP3 players.

Count on Apple further discounting their entry level iPhone this year to further narrow the gap between the iPod Touch and iPhone.

The only future I see for the iPod Touch is if Apple made it 5-7 inches for people who want a device to read on but cannot fit an iPad in their purse or brief case. E-Readers are massively popular here in London and that's a market the iPod Touch can be a game changer in.

Since iPod touch 4g didn't receive any updates, the iPod could be going down the road of the iPod classic.

Just left on shelves to be sold but no upgrades whatsoever. Sad but evidence seems to lead that Apple is leading the iPod touch in to this path.

Not going to happen.

The Touch is on a 2 year upgrade cycle so we should see an updated one this year. The Touch has one big difference from the classic in that the Touch runs IOS. That puts the pressure on Apple to update the Touch in order to run the next gen IOS and the apps in the store. I expect that the 3rd Gen Touch will be the next one not to support the next major IOS update so they will be coming up with an upgraded Touch to sell to all the current 3rd gen Touch owners.

That's very unlikely. We know why Apple didn't upgrade the iPod touch, and that's because it would overheat too much with the A5. The iPhone 4S already gets hot when gaming, and the iPod touch has a metallic back and is about half as thin, so it would actually burn you and become unusable.

We may see a redesign of the iPod touch making it somewhat thicker, and perhaps the A5X is the A5 but at 28nm, which would help with heat, and combined it would allow for better hardware.

I think we'll see iPhone 5 (sixth gen) and iPod touch 5 (fifth gen) come out at the same time.

Is the iPod Touch 5th gen going come out in March with announcement of iPad 3, or it is definitely going be at a later date?

Sorry, I have not kept up with Apple product please don't give me 'Search or go Google answers'. I need to know if I should buy a 4th generation now or just wait for a 5th in a month.

Ok let me shake the Magic 8 ball. September!
Lets confirm with finger in air. Oh, maybe October!
Now let me role the bones. September!

;)

The Buyer's Guide here gives you the history of Apple product releases. In the last four releases, the time frame was September and October, favoring September.

Given that last October's update to the iPod touch was a simple addition of white, perhaps Apple will surprise us with a real update, which is what this whole thread is about. Cast your wish! :)

Thank you, I will buy the 4th gen now then since it wont be released with the iPad 3s.

I didnt know the 4th gen had speakers with them which is why I've been using the iPhone 4 for the past year just for web browsing and music and not as a phone since I'm a Blackberry user.

I'm gonna say Siri.

And for everyone who'll jump on me about Siri needing a 3G data connection: When Siri was introduced it was "wouldn't it be great if you could talk to your device, in this case your phone" sounding like it'll make it's way to other products.

I guess we'll see tomorrow if it makes it into the iPad, and what incarnation that'll bring. Whatever happens will show us whether it's more or less likely we'll see Siri in the iPod touch 5th gen.

How do we know Apple will release a 5th gen iPod touch? XD

Well, I'm assuming they'll either discontinue the iPod touch line or update it. It is an iOS device and most iOS devices run in parallel. Apple had good business from people who wanted an "iPhone without the phone" (as Steve put it). People even find reasons to own an iPhone and an iPod touch. I see no reason for it not to need to get, at the very least, a faster processor as time goes on. :)

I'd at least wait until tomorrow to see if that is true. Perhaps Apple will surprise us, although I don't recall any rumors to the contrary.

too late, bought a 32gb brand new for 230, can't go wrong with that.

Weren't there huge rumors last summer about the iPod Touch being relatively untouched in the 2011 update, but that plans for a highly redesigned iPod Touch would show up in 2012?

Just a rumor, but...

It would be nice if they did redesign it to be in the identical form factor of an iPhone, and made it essentially an iPhone 4S sans phone stuff. I'd be on that one instantly.

My 2 Gen is getting sad. No camera, no nothing. It's a nice iPod and a makeshift browser-mailer, and runs some nice apps, but it isn't half what a modern iPod Touch is.

look I'm willing to admit that i was worried like the rest of you but that all changed during the iPad 3 event. Tim Cook made a point of saying that ". . . the iPod Touch, iPad, and iPhone are all part of the post PC era"

the Ipod touch fits the niche of people that want a mobile device without cellphone connectivity or or cellphone cost.

personally watch the next ipod touch to have an A5 processor like the ipad 2, same 4 in screen like the iphone 5 and 1080p camera

I agree with your first line of thinking about people wanting this type of device without the cellphone. The repeated monthly cell bill is an extreme expense next to a one time purchase of an iPod touch. You could buy each new release of the top of the line iPod touch during an iPhone contract period and save hundreds of dollars.

I don't expect Apple to offer a 4-inch screen. I think the size of the device is just right for handling. My pet peeve is that the curved edges make it less stable in my hands.

What ever Apple does for a new processor, heat will be a large determining factor. I was having an extended Facetime conversation last night and my iPod was getting uncomfortably hot.

Personaly, I think the iPod line has reached its maximum point. The only difference could be a better battery efficiency and a larger screen, if they bring it to the iOS. Sad, but realistic. Think about the classic: same scenario.

If the processor in the touch isn't updated it will eventually be unable to run many newer apps. Games in particular.

Yeah, there's really no more room for improvement...

Only a better processor, better software compatibility, better battery efficiency, larger screen, higher resolution screen, better front and rear camera, larger RAM ammount, GPS, Siri, stronger front glass, better heat solution...

I have a Touch 4G since 2010. And I love it! But,

I want: a 4.5-5 inch screen, 3MP camera and a data plan.

You might say "Well get an iPad!", but I want to be able to fit it in my pocket.

There are a lot of things that could be improved, but nothing's really revolutionary. I wouldn't be surprised if they kept updating or it they stopped it.

iPod Touch or iCamera?

I agree with your first line of thinking about people wanting this type of device without the cellphone. ...

+1 - reasons for an iPod Touch are for gaming, personal web communicator, and personal media device. I have a iPhone for work, so use a Touch for "my own stuff" (and yes have the GPS mount for satnav use in the car too!). So Apple should continue with it IMHO.

Where Apple could clean up would be to sell it as the iCamera. A 5-8Mb camera with zoom lens/flash (and appropriate neat apps) could be compelling (for me) - I noticed Polaroid showed an Android-based camera at CES.

I suspect it will remain iPhone sized (with a separate iPad Nano range a possibility in future for the 7" device fans like me). No doubt it will retain the iConnector, have 3 memory options of decreasing value-for-money, and *not* have a microSD/SD slot where the iPhone takes a SIM card. Shame on the latter as it would be nice for an iCamera role (not to mention cheap expandability!).

Roll on Sept 2012!;)

They could do like the iPad increase thickness a tad to improve battery life, improve processor to the A5 at least...we need better GPU horsepower, improve the back camera possibly, improve to 128GB for high end model.

iPod Touch is a gateway drug, to introduce people into iOS for those who can't afford an iPad or iPhone - doing anything to delete this device from Apples line of products would be idiotic - not to mention the new iPod Touch advertisement aimed at tweens - I don't see this device slowing down.

I also don't see them putting much innovation into it either - I imagine it will pick up some of the older innovation from the iPhone and iPad, and that will be enough to keep it at a low price point and enough to satisfy the tween market.
