does anyone know when we can expect the iPod touch 7th gen to be released, I am super excited as I am a sucker for any old tech which gets a new lease of life. Could the release be any day now?

The code for it is in iOS 12.2 and Apple usually releases a point update in March (every year since iOS 7), plus they also often release devices in that month as well. March is my best guess.

exited too! what screen size should we expect?
XR maybe? Could be moving away from the old form factor.

Maybe we might get a shock and it will have a pretty huge display, I’ve seen a few mock ups and they have had bigger displays than the iPhone XS Max, i think that would be pretty cool

If they make next iPod touch much bigger than the current model then I'm likely to just keep using an iPhone SE as a WiFi device to serve certain entertainment (books, music). That is what I have used an iPod touch for anyway, short of the odd check on news/weather... or once in awhile revisit an episode of some downloaded TV series while waiting at a dentist's office etc.

I already favor iPad mini for small tablet experiences, and got an XR as a phone upgrade because not wanting to get too far behind the tech curve on a phone. So the small form factor of existing iPod touch is quite acceptable to me, even preferable to larger forms since slips easily into any jacket or jeans pocket.

I would think there is a decent chance of a release by late March along with the iPads. I was hoping for the iPod Touch to be released in New York but Apple seems to have a sales strategy of releasing just a few products of a similar or same product line every so many months apart.

If you already have an iPhone what would be compelling about this? Playing high definition music by having additional storage?
Me...
I used to game A LOT on my Ipod Touch 3 through IpT5. Ipads was really costly back then, and the appeal was the IpT fit in my pocket.

Others...
--devs use them as affordable test devices. They can buy more of them over Iphones, which could give them more flexibility if they got a lot of projects going on at once
--companies can use more of those instead of less iPhones to do inventory, data entry, for customer interactions, etc.
If you have a wifi network set up, it's close enough.

--For children. It's more easily replaceable in terms of cost
--It's much thinner than an Iphone. Well, not that much, but to some, the difference matters. Better for working out (it can still access iTunes and all the other things that require modern iOS devices)
--comes in more colors
This is even more superficial, but, it works. I for one got a kick out of a yellow IpT5

When I took my iPhone 7 Plus out of service in November, my first thought was, At last, an iPod with truly decent battery life.

I get 14 hours or more straight listening from my Touch 6 128GB (auto updates, messaging, notifications etc. OFF!) but anything else sucks the juice at an alarming rate.

I can't imagine what a Touch 7 can bring to the table that a used iPhone with a fresh battery can't. Unless they keep the FM chip and anyone uses it.

I tried recording some events lately with my Zoom iQ and Shure MV88 microphones. My 7 Plus was hardly fazed but my Touch 6 barely lasted a couple of hours. I like the small size of the T6 but that's it.

I'll probable sell my Touch 6 pretty soon. It's new enough that someone can add AppleCare+ of they want.

I had the last version for music. Gave it away as the iPhone met my needs. If the new one comes with a big screen then gamers should love it.

I can think of:
1) FM (yes some of us still use radio)
2) Headphone Jack (yes BT is fine, but for a music oriented device i think it is a must)
3) Better support for BT Joypad (so they can sell it as a console)
4) USB- C (so that with Joypad you can run it as a switch in your TV)
5) Bigger battery (yes iphone without 3g have good battery, but without the internals it could be even better)
6) More storage (yes latest iPhones have more memory, but look at the price :p)

This are some cool stuff to start with (yes I know it will never happen), i am sure thought it will be a chip upgrade and not much more than what we have now.

Still having a dedicated device for Audio / Photo (if it has a decent enough camera) fit my needs, it will also help my phone reach more than a day battery life ;).

Also having an iPod as a current device could help Developer deliver more NON INTERNET app, as lately even Mario Run requires internet to function, having a dedicated device that does not have 24/7 internet might make them understand we want app to be able to run without a connection (by giving a market to them).

Nonsense. Sound quality through the Lightening connector is excellent.

You know that's an argument against the headphone jack, right?

Who believes the Touch 7 will have a headphone jack? Yes, it could happen... There's talk that the new iPad Mini will retain the jack. We'll know soon enough.

Yea, I'd like it to have Kindle qualities but Apple has made no moves toward developing that network or piggybacking onto Amazon that we've heard.

BTW, if you own a Kindle Fire (somebody gave me one) very few of the services are available without an internet connection. You can read books.

Why the hate dude?chill out.

Who said ANYTHING about quality? I ment as a music device I want to be able to connect it with as many Headphone as i can, BT is fine for occasional music listening (again not as in quality but as in quantity) but if i buy a dedicated music player i want it to support headphone jack as well (no dongles!!!)

Not really you can have HP jack and bigger battery.

I do not "believe", we are talking hypotetically and I was answering the question "What can an iPod bring" with a wish....or I should say requirement for me.

What??? Not making sense there.

Again chill out.

I too require a headphone jack. It is a must for me if I were to consider purchasing the new 7th gen iPod Touch. I like BT audio just fine, and have a few BT speakers that are always plugged in to a power source, but I can't be bothered charging headphones or having the batteries die at the most inconvenient time.

One major thing for me is Continuity features. They don’t work well between two iPhones. I tried it once, a small iPhone 5s for when I go out (my preference), and a 6s plus for home (I wanted something bigger for home, but I found the iPad mini too big for a handheld). I was particularly frustrated with not having all my texts and calls sync between my 5s and 6s plus. I basically had to carry both around at home, which was a dealbreaker. An iPod touch has full Continuity features.

I have an SE and iPad mini now. Because of Continuity I’m able to just carry around my mini at home, but I still find it too big for my purposes. I’d be very interested in this new iPod touch if they make it bigger than an SE.

What? Continuity should've worked between the two iPhones

I wish it did, but no. Some things like Safari handoff might have worked—can’t remember, it was awhile ago. But definitely calls and texts were not syncing between the two. That was the dealbreaker. I tried very hard to find a solution but everything I found pointed toward Apple not intending for people to use an iphone as a secondary device to another iphone like the ipad and ipod touch are.

So, calls is one thing, but when you say texts didn't sync, are you including iMessage in that? If so that's very weird

iMessage messages worked on both since both were signed into my Apple account, but with Continuity, regular texts are supposed to sync in iMessage too, but they didn’t.

(Just in case this wasn’t clear to anyone before—my 5s had an activated phone line, and I was using the 6s plus as an iPod touch/iPad mini, with no activated phone line.)
