Sorry it still just boggles my mind. Did everyone go get a cup of coffee when he talked about iPod Classic?

You have a choice, big capacity or internet and touch. If they would have included a HDD and a battery to support it you would all be moaning about how BIG it is. "Thats not an iPod, its sooooo BIG!!!"

Do you want a pda or hold every song you own. That is what you run with.

Exactly. Of course in due time they'll merge these 2 products (into the iPod Touch obviously) and that will be an awesome day. But until then, you'll have to choose.

The majority of the market IS ALREADY BUYING FLASH PLAYERS (Nano and Shuffle).

I think this is one of the main reasons why Apple went with flash memory with the Touch- most consumers seems to prefer the advantages of flash memory, vs. the higher capacity of HD.

When I said "majority of ipod users" I meant real ipods, not the mini versions for people who dont care to have the capacity.

It's nice to see apple's stock take a dip after these announcments, now maybe they will realize they can't just throw out any old thing and we'll eat it up.

and to the person who said that having an ipod with all your music on it is a "dumping ground", yeah i HATE how my closet is a dumping ground for my clothes, and how my kitchen is a dumping ground for my food, dishware and appliances. If only apple would release iHouse and force me to MANAGE my possessions rather than have everything I own in one place.

I can't wait to be LIMITED again!

1. The stock price doesn't reflect anything about how CONSUMERS are perceiving the new products. And you, and most of this site's users, don't reflect apple's overall iPod consumer base.

2. You "meant real ipods"... which make up a small percentage of Apple's overall iPod sales these days. No one buys them. Cause besides capacity, they aren't as good as Apple's flash based players. Plain and simple.

Ha, look at Diggs top stories...

Nothing but hate on these boards. If they would have put the HDD in you all would be complaining about how bigggg it is. Dont think so, go over to the Nano forums.

You all still have your iPods, with 160gb, so stop complaining. Life is about choices and at least Apple gave you options. Get the 160gb iPod, carry all 40000 songs around with you for whatever reason you need 40000 songs.

Until then, when I get enough money I will pick up my tablet pc and with plenty of music and videos on it. Besides, you sync up every night, it cant be that big of a deal to change out songs if you are able to listen to that much music in a single day.

Good grief, what is up with people telling everyone to stop thinking Apple made some bad business decisions? It's a free country, and this is a forum, people. If 16 GB is enough for you, buy it. Those of us who don't agree won't buy it. And all those sales that won't materialize from people that woke up today itching to fork over hundreds of dollars spell what? An iPod that offers nothing (Don't even mention 8GB more. I thought you just said capacity wasn't important.) over an iPhone except for lack of a contract at the expense of mail, a phone and a camera, for just $100 less spell what? Bad business decisions, that's what.

No one is here saying they shouldn't have released what they did. We just think (and it's not just the posters, read some of the critics out there) that it was a poor decision not to offer the OPTION, meaning Apple ended up spreading features over the line, with no clear high end option.

And enough about saying what is and isn't enough based on what you listen to. If you only need 3 GB, you get what you wanted. Lots of people need more than 16, and they get no option that carries a realistic video-playing screen. Can't those people wish they also had a product they could have, even at a higher price, just because you get what you want?

If no one needs that much storage, why even have a 16GB? If capacity isn't an issue, why is Apple doing away with the iPhone 4GB? Because no one was buying it when they could offer more money for more storage.

Good lord, let people have their opinions.

iPhone is the clear winner of this announcement today. They are cheaper now and the iPod is not as interesting. So the iPod will be for people who do not want AT&T and do not want to be tied to a contract.

Or for those living anywhere other than the United States...

those of you who want a touch with a hd, i think youll have to wait for hybrid drives to become more common and cheaper. that will finally give apple flexibility with size and battery life. until then, i think youre stuck with the classic. i personally have ordered a 16gb touch. i may have to manage my collection more often, but it's a price im willing to pay, and so is 375 (corporate discount) :p

ARGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!

It is everything I hoped for with the right price as well but I much rather have a few millimeters more or thickness and freaking harddrive than sissy 8GB or 16GB.

Yes, clearly, with only 5 hours of video playback using flash RAM, in order to have a HD and reasonable playback time, they would have to have a substantially larger battery. But at 8mm thick, they have a lot of room to play with before they would exceed the specs of the iPod line. The 4th Gen iPod is 15mm thick. At 15mm, the iPod Touch could have a 160GB HD and lots of battery for long playback. Since iPod Touch is running OS X, a 160GB beast could become quite a road warrior.

I owned Apple stock for a few years. Apple stock almost always rises in anticipation of a new announcement, then drops after the announcement is made.

'Buy on the rumor, sell on the news' is a common occurrence in the stock market.

Um... rises before, drops after.. Buy on the rumor "high" sell on the news "low"

isn't that the opposite of Buy Low, Sell High?

Seems like the time to buy is right now, after the news, after the price dropped.

Does anyone else who's watched the iPod Touch Guided Tour in Quicktime want to cut off the host's hands?

They're so annoying.

And don't get me started on his smirk......

The biggest dealbreaker for me is the lack of a native email client. A native iChat client would be killer, as well.

I'm a wifi junkie (my laptop has met most of the open APs in town, I'm sure), usually checking news, weather, and email while I'm eating lunch or waiting to meet a friend. The iPod touch is almost the perfect device for me.

That said ... I'll wait for the reviews.

If it had a native email client and a native iChat client, I would have already ordered one. I really love having 50+ GB of music on my iPod (5G, 60GB), but I can pare that down to ~15GB if it means I have a wifi beast in my pocket. Apple just needs to sweeten the deal a bit more and really flex that wifi muscle.

Let's face it, folks. Apple is back in the PDA market. The iPod touch is so close to being a solid PDA it's ridiculous. They're just waiting for the market to gobble them up, watch the sales curve dip, and push out new functionality (namely Mail and iChat, I'd presume) ... probably right after Thanksgiving.

I also can't tell if the iPhone has the obnoxiously shiny back panel or if it's matte like on the iPhone and the rest of the current iPod lineup.

Come on, Apple. The iPod touch is so close to being perfect. Pull that Ace out of your sleeve and put it on the table.

ipod touch

you should all realise the reason why there isn't a hdd version of the touch is because if there was, no one would buy the classic.

but basically, if you really do need 160gb in your pocket (compensating for something maybe :D ) and it really is that critical to your life, then get the classic. but i'm not sure anyone can really make proper use of that kind of capacity except as a portable external drive.

i've got 155gb of music in my iTunes - that's just over 850 days of continuous playing. and most of it i'm only going to want to play once in a blue moon anyway. so you make use of iTunes to build up decent playlists that you can sync to the Touch. keep them about 8gb at the most and then you'll have plenty of space for a couple movies, few tv shows and pictures.

and next year you can get the 32gb Touch when it comes out

(also, i wonder if there is an issue with battery life? would a hdd draw a lot more power than flash, yes? so possibly the big fat screen on the Touch requires a lot and the processing required for the apps is a great deal more than for the interface on the other iPods so if they did give you a 60gb Touch you'd probably only get 2 hours of use out of it)

Mail

no Mail, Google Maps...

Someone please explain...

If it has wifi and safari then actually it does have email correct? I understand that it wont be kicked to the iPod, but cant I just log in through the .mac site and read and respond through there?

The touch is the PDA i've been waiting for. 16GB will be more than enough for my needs. Can't wait to see what developers come up with as additions.

Why not a mic type dongle that plugs in and allows for voip? I would think developing for the touch would be much the same as developing for the iphone.

So a web app that does voip.
An add on mic head phone dongle.

I cannot understand why some people here are so disappointed with the 16GB of storage. Seriously people, how many of you like so many songs??? I have 20,000 songs on my library but my favorite are less than a thousand...I have playlists and now I will be syncing only them to my newly ordered iPod Touch!

Please do not also forget that this thing has a 3,5 Display and WiFi. If Apple had decided to put a Hard Drive, then the battery life would suffer!!!

Just try thinking before you post!!!

You failed to follow your own advice.

Quantity is only part of the story. Do you remember the when Apple made a big deal about the Apple Lossless Codec? Try encoding all your tracks with a lossless codec and see how many of those 20,000 fit in 16GB of space. Quality matters to some people.

volume control?

I can't believe the iPod touch doesn't have physical volume controls like the iPhone. How do you change the volume when it is in your pocket or when you are in another application like the web browser?
