Apple has NEVER linked lossless with iPods...lossless is for pros worried about keeping ALL their music in hard disks. Almost NOBODY encodes in lossless for using their iPods...please be more realistic next time.

Yeah. You do know that the difference between MP3 and FLAC is absolutely lost when using any iPod hardware, right?

Sorry, but no iPod ever made, including the new ones, will have the proper hardware to decode the MP3 files to audio in a way that any audiophile would think are "professional grade." You can't tell anyway, unless you have professional grade headphones and are in a quiet room - and nobody will have either when using any iPod ~

BUT!

Let's wait until the iPod Touch has its firmware hacked let's people do whatever they want, lol. :)

Not even going to consider this one until it gets at least 60GB of storage. I know Thin is In, but it's not the be-all and end-all for some of us.

The music people never seem to understand the video peoples need for large storage for video files.

The storage complaints are VERY valid ones.

Saying "just get the "classic"" is coming from someone who obviously doesn't "get" video people. the screen size cant compare to the "touch".

Just imagine if apple released an audio ipod with unprecedented sound and clarity. An iPod that made it sound like you are at a symphony. Simply glorious! Now imagine that it was only 50MB in capacity. Yes you can fit a song or three on it, but thats it. sounds fun?

These devices are supposed to be mobile. Having to choose just three of your favorite videos on a mobile device is certainly something you can do but if your going on a trip for a week iits not even close and a disappointment to say the least.

Dont get me wrong, the new "touch" looks fantastic and probably works like a dream, but is all but impotent with its current storage for us videophiles.

I would rather have high storage and short battery life over the current design. There will always be a power outlet to recharge wherever you go but my video library sits on my computer at home.

apple ALMOST did it this time. Missed it by that much.

I will wait for the next or next, next version. 30gig minimum.

Well, I guess this is the price consumers pay for when an industry changes standards. 8 GB and 16 GB won't cut it for me, in fact they make my 2nd Generation iPod look more attractive. Especially at those prices!

While I'm happy Apple gave us a 160 GB "iPod classic," but I'm a little let down by the "iPod touch." I would expect 10 GB and 25 GB to start off, but I would have rather put up with the normal mini-hard drives and get 100 GB in the "iPod touch." Then again, the first iPods were in 5 GB and 10 GB, so I'll give it two years or so, and hopefully it'll surpass my 60 GB "In living color" iPod. Either way, it'll be interesting to see how much Flash-based hard drives evolve with the "iPod touch" in the game.

As for the Nanos, I like the new design, but not keen on the storage space. Otherwise, the new Nanos are neat. iTunes Wi-Fi, I don't think I'll be able to use it for a while, seeing as the Nano and "iPod classic" don't have it. Again, the price for new innovation. I'll wait and settle on a 160 GB "iPod classic."

mmm Ordered!

16Gb iPod touch 422.25 it is supposed to arrive by the 4th (though I am sure it will ship sooner).

Yay!! The only bad part is I think I promised some girl my old 60gb video :( haha

i think the ipod touch should have been made available from today. I hate it when apple delay the products.

The negative responses here are simply mind-boggling to me. This is a completely sweet-ass product. Yes, it's only 8-16GB, but this is solid-state, not hard-drive based. My guess is it would be more than a little bit fatter with a hard drive; a good bit of the thickness is eaten up by the touch-screen. Also, hard drive uses more power, so you'd have a harder time having such a large screen without a much clunkier battery. You now have a device that can store your music, photos, and video; surf a wi-fi connection; and easily display/play your music/photos/video to a TV, complete with transitions. True, you can't get all your videos with that capacity - but perfectly usable for putting all the movies/music you'd need for a few days on it. Want more? Just change the content when you sync. All that in something this TINY.

My only negative? Requires OS 10.4.10. WHY? PC only requires Windows XP. Don't tell me, iTunes 7.4 is going to also require OS 10.4. That would totally suck. I have a 2.5 year old iMac G5. That's too old to support? Pshaw.

The new iPod touch is a bit reserved when it comes to storage space, but that doesn't mean that everyone is going to hate it. I know plenty of people who have way less than that amount of music, so they should be perfect fits.
I personally will wait 'till a newer model is released with higher capacities and take the plunge on the iPod touch. For now, I'm holding my dimes.

I love how the previous "rumor" thread sooooo many people stated "I dont care I just want a HDD upgrade" and now that they have seen the Touch its like.....but i want that too :(

I already asked once, but just incase anybody missed it:

1) The website says the iPod Touch will be shipping on the 28th. Does this mean that the Apple stores will also be stocked on the 28th? Of course I'm sure nobody knows for sure, but in general in the past is this what happens?

2) No student discount on the iPod Touch. How does this normally work? The other iPods have student discounts, however the iPhone does not.

3) the iPod Touch does not have a glass screen, correct?

Let's be realistic

Yeah UNSPEAKED's "brick" ipod touch with HD was funny, but really they could have done it and not been any thicker than my 3G 40GB ipod.

Something like this:

By pigumon at 2007-09-05

This would sell without a doubt.

i love the ipod touch, which is why i just ordered a 16gb one.

Although I still want it today!

Wow

Not sure why anyone would have any big complaints... The new line seems to address everyones needs quite nicely.

I don't understand why people are complaining about storage...16 GB is plenty of room for your favorite tracks / tv shows / movies. Do you really need to carry around the entire series of "Friends" on your iPod???? Syncing with iTunes is so user friendly / simple that I don't mind picking and choosing certain media to sync to my iPod:) I also want the device to be THIN and I don't wanna have to deal with the fragility of a HDD.

16 GB Touch ordered and now the waiting begins!!!

Hope everyone was able to pick something up today...Nanos look awesome (like the new colors), and the Classic is actually really cool looking too!!

OK, so having blagged my way into the London event, I have the following observations:

1) The iPod Touch is GORGEOUS. Lightweight, svelte and a joy to use. Safari blew me away. Seems to have an iPhone-esque useragent, as http://m.facebook.com automagically forwarded me to http://iphone.facebook.com
2) The iPod Classic in silver is hideous. In my opinion, it looks cheap and nasty.
3) The iPod Nano looks a hell of a lot better in person that in pictures - it feels small, not fat. Yet still, looking at pictures it looks ugly...I guess it's just not photogenic.
4) The split screen UI on the Nano and Classic is weird, and a bit pointless. Doesn't add anything to the experience and isn't consistent (it disappears once your go deeper than the main menu)...
5) Cover flow is great on the iPod Touch. A bit jerky and slow on the Nano/Classic.
6) Hospitality events with free beer are fun.

More realistic? Okay, almost nobody you know uses lossless. Everyone I know does and it is gaining in popularity. Whether it's FLAC or ALAC. You do know that you can buy FLAC audio directly online? Just because iTunes don't deliver it doesn't mean there are no other outlets who don't make it a standard.

And Apple didn't have to announce it in conjunction with an iPod. They introduced it as a ripping feature of iTunes during a keynote (by user demand) which by default makes it a feature of any iPod.

And if you can't tell the difference between a lossless codec (or even a higher bitrate AAC) and an MP3 file on ANY audio system, something is very very wrong.

All iPods and iPhone play Apple Lossless except the shuffle. I agree that the iPod probably doesn't have a good enough DAC to hear any difference, but iTunes is not robust enough to support two libraries -- one in Lossless for safekeeping and one in AAC for iPod use. And even if it did, I'm not sure I'd have the time or inclination to rip everything twice. So suffice it to say that since I want to preserve my songs in Apple Lossless, that's what I play on my iPod and iPhone. So more storage would be nice.

But I understand why Apple has decided to abandon hard drives except in the Classic. In a few years, the iPhone and Touch will have 60 GB capacities. Maybe larger. I just wish flash memory technology could proceed at a faster pace because even if you don't use Lossless for audio, movie files in H.264 take up a LOT of space.

yes, i would expect the stores to have them in stock by then. maybe sooner? when i ordered mine they can an expected delivery date of 2nd October

2) No student discount on the iPod Touch. How does this normally work? The other iPods have student discounts, however the iPhone does not.
i'm not sure, but i thought that when the 5G ipods came out, the top of the range ones weren't on student discount either. i might be wrong but i seem to remember someone asking about that then too

3) the iPod Touch does not have a glass screen, correct?
not sure - the tech specs on the website don't say. but they don't for the iPhone either - i'd expect it to be the same as the iPhone, whatever that is

Aw hell. Now I've got a decision to make-- capacity or touch... Problem is when I'm stuck like this I wind up deciding to do nothing. I don't think we'll see hard drive + touch for another year, if we see it then.

What's the obsession with super thin?

Good Call. Why does thin win over function, when the iPods were "thin" two years ago? If I were you, I'd do nothing. Why does the company that is an expert at "Simple" make us have a decision like this? Unfortunatly for me, capacity is a necessary requirement. Super Thin however is not. I could care less. So it looks like I'm sticking it out with my trusty ol'5G. The sad thing is I'd order the touch in a heartbeat.

Amazing at the iPod Touch, I will be getting one for sure. I have more than 30GB of songs, however I only listen to about 4GB max of songs in any given week/ month. So to say the least the 16GB fits my needs perfectly. I never understood people carry along their entire library in their cars, if I get bored I either change it up or put a CD and at times put the radio on for a refresh.

Video encoded in AVI format is good enough considering the screen resolution and size, I say most likely 350 Megs or less for one TV Show or about 700 Megs for a movie.

I believe Apple chose to go with flash ram is because it render better battery life, its faster at caching, read and write without any of the bad vibrations. Hence the iPhone also utilizes flash ram.

I am sure if there was a 32GB flash ram available Apple would incorporate it into the line, however that would increase the price.

People here will always complain, you cannot make everyone happy. I on the other hand will be come end of Sept. :D

Thanks illitrate23 !

I would love to wait an extra bit to see if I could get a student discount, but realistically I'm going to be driving to the nearest Apple store when they're released so that probably won't work :(.

Now the big question will be, 8 gb or 16gb? I could only justify purchasing the 16gb if I could sell off some of my other gadget "stuff" to make up the 100$ difference.

Go to Dell.com, configure ANY pro Dell tower to match the Mac pros. The Dells are all more expensive. Same thing on the pro laptops, the Dell comes in at $650 more (with a tv tuner as a plus).

PC's only have a reputation of being cheaper because they offer crappy entry level models and Apple don't. On the high end, Apple is one of the cheapest brand out there.

Mac Pro - £1699 for the entry level

The alienware comes with dual 8800 gts graphics cards and 2Gb ram and although it's not xeon processors I'll bet no one here would notice the difference in actual use between dual dual core 2.66Ghz xeons and a quad core 2 2.66Ghz. But the mac pro has a far better case. :)

I have 15gb of music, SOMEHOW I deal with having a 2GB nano, wanna know how? I don't whine my ass off about how little the storage is and just get on with life, if you don't want an iPod touch, don't buy it.

Whining constantly won't make apple bring out a £225 32gb model tomorrow.... deal with technologies limitations.

How relevant will the WiFi really be? When youre home, you have your computer. Its not like the iPhone where you can at least use EDGE. Just saying because of the iPhone price drop, my options are open big time.
