After update

It looks much better, but still not perfect. The ipod touch is a week 37, I went to the apple store yesterday before the update and they said they would give me a new one, but that I would have to come back becasue they did not have any in stock. Not sure if I am going to return it now.

Yea, the firmware fixed the gamma levels, making your blacks "greys" so that it won't show the negative blacks as much...

Still a bad screen though....

welll apple replaced my week 37 ipod because of 30 dead pixels and negative blacks. i have week 38 and after the update looks the same.

Until I can see quality photos of a 'fixed' week 37 compared to a good week 38, I remain skeptical of your skepticism. Show me the money, brother.

Well the patch has definetly made my week 37 better (this was the 2nd week 37 I've had mind and it was already an improvement over the original one I had). Bourne Identity opening sea at night scene is fantastically clear.

I remember reading somewhere (dunno where) when the iPod touch came out you could copy the Mail application from an iPhone to the touch and it'd work fine...

After the update, what's the deal with this, does the official Mail client still work on an iPod touch ?

Did it work previously ?

I don't know where I read it, but I'm wondering if it's possible as it's an Apple app, so shouldn't really be locked out.

That has never worked because the touch was locked down so tightly and no one has successfully hacked it yet. It was only a theory

yeah... Im getting a replacement

Yeah i was on the phone with apple for 2 hours fighting for a replacement, and i got it. I sent the damn thing away, right before this update came out. if they put my ipod touch in the replacement program, they cant just send me the same one back cause an update came out, can they?

Did itunes offer to sync safari bookmarks to the touch before 1.1.1? I never noticed. it also has different sync option for ical and address book. maybe the option to add events will be coming.
Yeah it did...

Nah, Gizmodo said that because it was using the same OS (exactly the same core), one could copy the Mail application and it should work. But the lock on the iPod touch is different than the iPhone, and I am worried about the Mail.app trying to connect to your mail using the EDGE network on a device that doesn't connect through cellular waves...

Slightly different theory for improvement of 36 & 37

I've tried to work out from everything posted here and my experience with my week 37 a unifying theory. (I'm a simple user, not an engineer, software guru etc).

1. Chinese factories produced some week 36 and considerably more week 37 Touch. Looking at most pictures, on most machines, plus applications the negative blacks would not be apparent but there were some rogue screens.

2. As the bad screens are returned (& Apple realise that some screens have failed QC) the forums start to post test pictures to show if you have a rogue screen which reveal that many week 36 & 37 Touch has a problem in that the chroma is set wrong in the firmware / software.

3. Apple immediately (probably a couple of days) release an img file to the chinese factories with the revised chroma settings so that week 38 Touch rolls off production line as perfect (with same physical screens).

4. Apple's big push is the main release date of 28th September so make a decision to make a software update of a bug release with huge image file to replace week 36 & 37 software with week 38 the day before the main release.

5. When you update the ipod it doesn't look to see serial numbers or anything but just replaces the old "bad" OS on week 36 & 37 and "good" OS on week 38 with bug fixed week 38 OS

6. Result: Good OS on week 38 replaced with good OS week 38. No change except for genuine rogue / bad hardware screens of week 38 (people with bad 38 have reported no improvement with update. Some with 36 & 37 show no / little improvement - these people also have genuine faulty screens.)

Just a theory ........

How would I know if one had a week 36 or 37 or 38 ipod touch?
I'm still weary of buying my 8gb touch until there seems to be better results with the screen. My luck holds too true that I'll end up with the most negative looking screen :)
And also, wfuggle mentioned a big shipping date of September 28th. Does that mean there will be much easier availability of the iPod touch after (consults calender)...today?

Update fixed my ipod, it was a week 37. I tested it with the Jay-Z picture ...
lol, I love that so many people are turning to Jay-Z to see if there's a negative black effect or not!
I don't know whether to laugh or wince

Thanks for the pics, although I am not sure how much weight they hold..
Notice the two completely different lighting conditions.

Good catch wakerider!
Didn't notice that till you pointed it out :) (not sarcastic, seriously!)

How would I know if one had a week 36 or 37 or 38 ipod touch?

Well, if you haven't bought it yet I'd guess you'd be getting a week 38 or 39... not sure what week we're on now :) For reference, I bought mine mid-Sept and it was a week 36.

People are determining their "week number" by examining their serial number, which encodes it in the fourth and fifth digits (wonder what happens when they reach week 100...)

Correct me if I am wrong, but aren't there only 52 weeks in a year!

I assume that is how they are numbered.

Hahahaa... uh... yeah, you're right. LOL. Never mind me. :)

Anyone figure out where the year is encoded?

On a side note got some pics of before and after doing the 1.1.1 update on my week 36, will post shortly.

the year is the bit before the week, i.e 9C738 7 stands for 2007, and the 9C represents the factory the iPod was built in.

Some reflections in there gumming up the first shot, but I think you can see there's been a massive improvement :) I also tried to keep the lighting the same between the shots... not perfect but I tried anyway (very difficult because of the limited dynamic range on most digicams)..

I'd also like to comment on a small thing -- the Touch remembered the web page I was on through a full restore... nice and unexpected.

Also, I agree with the person that said sync speeds feel quicker -- they definitely do :) Overall very pleased with the update! :D

I do notice that the batterie lasts longer amy screen looks better. I think that if fixed some bugs with the OS it's self many making it faster or betterinsome way.

Ahhh! Problem with iTunes!

I can't even install this update on my iPod touch because stupid iTunes won't connect to the Internet. I have a week 38, but I still want to install the update for its performance features. The iTunes store works, but the MiniStore, album art, and updates don't work.

Does anyone know how to fix this Internet connection problem with iTunes? I really need everyone's help. I've installed the latest version of iTunes multiple times.

P.S. - I'm typing this from my Touch right now :) .

Well, came back from the Apple Store last night after trying to return the iPod and they didn't have any in but they suggested I install this update before coming back to see if it solved the problem.

Installed the update, and I thought I noticed a slight difference but on further inspection I think I was just imagining the difference, it looks about the same.

How big is the firmware file? I'm downloading it and it said 150.6MB, but its now past that at 187.2MB ?? I'd like to know when it will be finished.
