My Week 38 Touch just got updated.
The screen was good before and is I'd say exactly the same now.

Some movie scenes are still very dark but never to the extent that I would call it a faulty display.

However the software update seems to only change contrast settings for people with previously faulty displays and not for the W38 ones.

It seems to me that the update does the following

W36 & W37 - Fixes the video problem as well as other small bugs

W38 + - Skips the video fix (since they are already good) and fixes other small bugs.

The ipod update was the best thing that happened to me. I had a week 37 and was comtimplating returning it but the update fixed the video problems and im so thankful for the promplyt update

How long did the download take? For some reason mine says i have 3 hours left after 14.7 mb dowloaded. I have cable broadband. WTF?

has anyone noticed that after the update, the shift key sometimes stays on when typing in passwords. It is weird and caps lock is not on in system preferences.

Before I start complaining, let me say the I love my iPod touch, and think it's the coolest gadget I have ever used.

But Apple really needs to work on fixing some bugs with the software. Stability within apps on the touch is...mehh, not so great. I have had iTunes and Safari crash on me numerous times - what gives?

Then after I updated my iPod, I got a new bug - the music stopping in Safari bug that others have had. I didn't have it before, but I sure do now. It makes listening to music and using Safari basically impossible.

Another bug - if you quickly scroll through your albums in Cover Flow, you'll often get a bunch of album covers with the music note - they have album artwork, but the iPod decides not to load them.

One other thing - why is the switching from portrait to landscape so finicky. One second it will work smoothly, and the next, it'll take 15-20 seconds to register. I just don't get the inconsistency.

Having busted my ass with 3+ hours on the phone w./Apple over 5 different calls + 1 visit to a Genius, all to get a replacement sent out...I'm going with the replacement.

I'm very tempted to do the firmware patch to my Week 37...but if Apple knew that's what it was, why didn't they tell me that instead of sending me a new unit? It's not like they didn't have a bunch of chances!

And we'll never know if it's a wonky LCD that's given a crutch via washed-out gamma profiles, or just a firmware issue that's 100% fixed.

For $400, I don't want to have doubts...and my confidence in my unit is really shaken. Far better to start fresh with a clean slate.

EDIT: Macworld's before-and-after pics. Looks like Week 37s just become "less bad." http://www.flickr.com/photos/macpublishing/1449627733/

if you type in an incorrect password multiple time, it now says ipod is disabled instead of iphone is disabled

I have a week 37, tested it with Jay Z picture and dark movie in some places (Downfall) and noticed the problem right away, i was going to return it but best buy didn't have any in stock so i waited and just did the update today and now it looks perfect. Jay z i can completely see and dark scenes in movies are as they should be. Another thing i have noticed is that the quality of the videos seem to be sharper, maybe thats just me, but i'm not going to exchange mine anymore.

Update fixed my ipod, it was a week 37. I tested it with the Jay-Z picture and the free Prison Break download from itunes. The opening fight scene is clear now and the blacks are BLACK not all negative. Saved me a trip to my local apple store too, :)

Before this update I had horrible negative black issues. I had safari crashing on me constantly and I couldn't listen to music while surfing the internet. All of these things have been fixed. I have a week 36. Oh yea, and when hitting the home key the apps wouldn't flow in but would just appear, now they do that cool fade in.

iPod touch Calendar Updated

The iPod touch calendar app has been updated, although ***NOT*** in the way we wanted!!! My old calendar, when synced with outlook, showed appointments in october for wednesday, thursday, friday, and possibly saturday (don't remember) when I was looking at September. However, there weren't any appointments there, and when I clicked on them, the appointment dots disappeared. Now there are no appointment dots where there shouldn't be any appointment dots.

So the calendar can be changed, no surprise there. So either Apple is not responding to the criticism, or Apple hasn't had time to get to it yet. Let's hope it's the latter!

Try putting in your code wrong 5 times. It NOW says "iPod is locked" instead of iPhone :) lol

Yep.

I can definitely say that prior to the 1.1.1 update, I experienced the Safari crashes, the music stop in Safari bug, and the Cover Flow album artwork non-loading issue when quickly flipping through, but after testing each of these for a while after updating, I can't say I've experienced any of these anymore. They appear to be fixed on MY touch. *Edit* In fact, album art seems to load a LOT faster in Cover Flow, too. Almost instantaneous even when flicking extremely quickly. :D

As for 15-20 seconds for portrait/landscape switching... that's a LONG time. Never did I experience that, even prior to the update. That could be a deeper rooted issue if the time you cited is actual.

I just plugged my ipod in to sync some photos, and I got a prompt asking me to allow apple to retrieve diagnostic information from the touch.

I clicked send, but have no idea what that is it never did that till the update.

I've noticed that this version has also rectified the track skipping hang..... on the previous version when on shuffle and you'd wake the touch it took 2-3 seconds and sometimes several presses of the track buttons to move to a new track....... they have also improved the accuracy of the keyboard.

Seems to have "fixed" mine too

Just thought I'd chip in....

After applying the update I have to say dark videos look a LOT better, and I also noticed the cover flow working much smoother.

I am happy with the update - seems to have done my Touch a world of good.

Well I for one am happy with the update. I had 4 issues with my iPT W37: 1. Negative blacks - now 100% better. 2. Alarm clock didn't sound - now it does. 3. Music stopped playing when browsing - now works fine without a stutter. 4. Safari crashes - can't say for sure that its fixed but not a single crash in 2 hours of browsing + listening to music. I chalk that up as a home run for Apple.

What I am curious to see if it's the system now can play M4V files that were sometimes considered too big for Safari (via streaming), files specifically encoded for iPods...

The error message I was talking about is : "Safari can't open the page because it is too large." It's a 15 Mb M4V...

Oh, and yeah the update didn't repair this...
