On my 37 there is definitely improvement... but when I cut out ambient light there is definitely still a negative. I am still taking mine back tomorrow.

Anyone know if this update fixes the "music stops playing when browsing in safari" issue? Or apps randomly quitting?

I think it definitely is a whole new firmware.

Try putting in your code wrong 5 times. It NOW says "iPod is locked" instead of iPhone :) lol

Hmm, Apple arranged a courier for my other week 37 with a screen defect. This update seems to make it much better. If I send it off, will they just re-flash it then send it back instead of making any significant changes? If that's the case then I won't send it out and waste all that time. On the other hand who knows... Damn you Apple :p

150mb is just way to much for any iPod model for simple bug fixes...

No improvement on my week 38 touch after the update, screen still looks like crap, possibly even worse.

Hell Yeah!

Week 37 iPod with SERIOUS black-negative issues ... FIXED! completely! (JayZ test and very dark movies (300) display very well!)

Did itunes offer to sync safari bookmarks to the touch before 1.1.1? I never noticed. it also has different sync option for ical and address book. maybe the option to add events will be coming.

Hi guys, I have a week 38 and whilst my screen issues are not nearly as bad as some I have seen they are still there and the update had no perceivable difference.

im thinking that too. because i watched about 5 minutes of video with black scenes before i installed the update and after i installed i watched the same video and it looks the EXACT same.

Then maybe you actually got a lemon. For sure, not in my head. I wanted to toss this thing in the upper deck of a toilet tank so it could flush forever... until today! Love it.

My week 37 screen now looks worlds better after the update. Definite improvement on photos and videos that had negative black issues before.

Just to add to the mix.

just finished the update my screen is 100 prcent better as well

It does look a little washed out but that could be because I was so used to the over saturation coverflow looks amazing so do movies even really dark ones like donnie darko I am very pleased

After update

It looks much better, but still not perfect. The ipod touch is a week 37, I went to the apple store yesterday before the update and they said they would give me a new one, but that I would have to come back becasue they did not have any in stock. Not sure if I am going to return it now.

Thanks for the pics, although I am not sure how much weight they hold..

Notice the two completely different lighting conditions.

Week 38 is still superior if they tweeked the (bad) week 37 contrast/brightness/gamma settings to make it better because the underlying hardware is built correctly and will retain more flexibility in displays and brightness.

However, if it was only a software issue, or only an issue about the software interacting with the hardware, then it is more concievable that they could have completly fixed it.

(although, I suppose, if the end product is fine for all models, it might not matter. I'd still prefer a 38, though)

Mine is significantly better in two ways :-

1. The screen looks great now when playing dark video, very watch-able.

2. the screen flicker that was there on low brightness settings has totally gone.

To all those that think this has been resolved by 'just upping the brightness' are wrong. As that did not work when you increased the brightness yourself. This is clearly a new driver / profile for the screen which make it operate much better.

WOW what a difference. I was satisfied with my touch before and really didn't think there was a problem, but now I realize that I DID have a problem. It looks awesome now.

After the update my screen works as a charm!
I'm not returning my Touch...

Also, the update solved the album art display issues an Cover Flow (sometimes it stopped showing album covers, when i scrolled far to the right or left).

So, I'm glad these things got solved... now, to enjoy my IPT

Just updated, and already I've seen a difference. Just the start-up time was cut about 3 seconds to turn on. The screen looks terrific, and now I'm really pleased with this update. And best of all, I knew that my iPod touch wouldn't get bricked!:D:apple:

Question about album art

Question for all the iPod touch owners out there - I just ordered one from Amazon, and it's coming in October (takes way too long...) How does the iPod touch render artwork that is not square in Cover Flow? Does it work like the same in iTunes (that is, it renders it accurately) or does the iPod touch squash the artwork into a square?

The reason for asking this is because I listen to a lot of Chinese music, and the artwork is always rectangular. Thanks! :)

It is exactly as it is in iTunes...your artwork should look fine. I've got several albums that have artwork that is rectangular or not standard size and they are fine.

Thank you very much! I feel relieved :D - there are so many programs that just squash album artwork... CoverSutra, for one.

Well you're trapped really as it's always nice to be updated and secure. For the Touch you don't buy much by staying with the older firmware do you?

indeed a tough call, apple is really bad at developing softwares, every update from apple for any of its products almost always comes with a whole package, rather than a "patch".

Even more annoy is apple have never been transparent, let users know exactly what the patch includes. A bunch of general terms means nothing. You never been able to choose what patch you want, what you don't want. May I call that "bundle"?

I would just resist any update unless I know it offers significant improvement in the area I really care.
