What makes it very difficult for me to believe it was an entirely different person however, and I'm not sure why this hasn't been pointed out previously, is that the video of the editing of the photo depicts a greater area than the final photo.

Identical wrinkles are evident in the shots below, yet you can see past the bounds of the image released on flickr, to the left and right. I would imagine it is theoretically possible to fake this greater area, but I think it would be very difficult and more importantly, unnecessary. Thus, the creator of the video at least has access to an original photo, or they created it themselves.
Tell me if I am wrong.

Excellent find. Shame that i didn't notice. Now I AM confused... Looking carefully at those extra wrinkles, I can't find any obvious inconsistency with original ones. I give up and wait for Tuesday...

The pictured bar code: "M8719Z/A" belongs to this product...

APPLE MAC OS X SERVER 10.2 - 10 CLIENTS M8719Z/A. Manufacturer : Apple. Mfr Part No : M8719Z/A

Meh.. Never believed it, never cared. iPods are boring. Apple are doing more for the "what's a macintosh, eh?" "what's taters eh" kind of people, than for the macintosh people. We don't need another iPod. We need an acronym though:
JAFI
Just another friggin iPod... :p
EDIT: I do have an iPod, a 20GB 3G and iPods rule, but they don't need to be updated like hotcakes just to beat iRiver and others...

someone print the photo out and take a barcode reader to the barcode, that'll tell us once and for all whether it is an 8 or a B....

That's an interesting possibility. However, I don't believe a Dutch guy will write those two chinese characters IN THAT WAY. ONLY A NATIVE CHINESE CAN WRITE LIKE THAT. And that chinese person has to be around 40 years old, and didn't have high education. The reason lies in how the second character is written. Do a translation on your mac for "this side up" and observe the second chinese character. There is only one dot on the left side. However, in the original ipod image or the video, there are TWO dots on the left side of the second chinese character. That's an old way of writing it, and only those chinese people who are not very literate still write that way.

Oh Rockblade, message me in Mandarin or Cantonese and we can have a pleasurable powwow. Give it a rest... This forgery is not going to be released. I'm going on record as saying both were done by two fake authors. It's "fun" to predict what the virgin video i-Pod will look like, wowever, Apple's design team is not this boring and predictable.

I see that the MR headline "iPod Video Photo - a Fake" has become "iPod Video Photo - a Fake?"

The fun was too good to end so easily :)

It should be "iPod Video Photo Video - a Fake?"

This "Is it Fake" is getting VERY VER VERY old and even stupider.....

Has anyone ever heard of Ockham's Razor?

Numquam ponenda est pluritas sine necessitate.

or to people who don't speak latin

Given two equally predictive theories, choose the simpler, and The simplest answer is usually the correct answer.

But why go to all the trouble and remain anonymous? It does not make sense...

mmm.
How does one explain the moire interference patern on the lcd of the original picture???

It does not show in the video how it's made. I think the video is showing how it could have been made, but I'm convinced it's not the same picture. but the wrinkles mmm maybe it is

One thing is for sure - the culprit is lurking on this forum, and may well be posting (umm, that's two things for sure).

So look for clues like this one above...

So make your move, Mr Johannes Chan!

Or is it Jiang Van der Berg?

AHAHAHAHAHA!!! Aaah, that was great.....

In the video, it is implied that Last Filter was used three times (repeating some filter that would eventually give such an effect).

Sez?

to tell you the truth I thought this thing was real, so I have to congratulate the guy who made it, well done

Why does everyone assume it was a man? And we now apparently have TWO image fabricators (assuming Mr(orMs) Crowbar is telling the truth). Curiouser and curiouser...

That is some nice Photoshopping work, but its not exactly difficult. I wish it was real tho, I might have gotten it.

No, I havnt read though all 12 pages :p

Chris

Ha ha ha ha

This is hilarious! I must monitor MR over the weekend. What a great fake, and it wasn't even in an elevator.

I can't believe all the people who think the video is the fake. Forget analyzing the pixels--who but the author of the fake photo could give such a mercurial tone of mischief to the "making of" video? The only other answer is that it's someone at Apple having fun with us rumies... a little double bluff...

We'll all know in about a day...

That's way awesome. If only the other hoaxers had such a sense of humor.

The guy with the fakepod page was dead on, and nobody listened to him.

Bogus chinese? Check.

Bogus serial number (reused from old version of server)? Check

Suspicious color bars? Check.

Some of us pretty much figured out EXACTLY how this was faked, yet tons of people were in complete denial and refused to believe the evidence. Looks like some people on here really need to brush up on their photoshop skills after insisting that things in the picture (like the translucent label) were impossible.

That video is definately a fake. The original is on the left and a screen capture of the movie on the right. notice the absence of the number 7 handwritten on the movie versions sticker.

Definately a fake!

New iPod tomorow!!

Wow they got us good. But I want to make one point clear:

Just because it could be photoshopped doesn’t mean that it’s not real. If we took every picture and said it’s fake just because the same picture could be produced in photoshop, then we are cheating ourselves. Yes I believe that THIS particular photo is fake, but there’s still a chance that it’s real. After all, maybe the video was a prank to disprove the actual thing. Who knows. I think we should be careful before jumping to conclusions, in all cases.

Uh, there is also a chance that a fairy lives in me lower intestines. But I try not to think about it. And saying who knows doesn't get me anywhere.

Some of us were right on about the whole "this side up" yielding "this side" by mistake and all that, yet you're still going on about how photos may or may not show real things. So what? That's not an effort to try to figure it out, that's just not being able to look deeper. The video is clearly not a fake to "disprove" the original "photo" so many people wanted so much to believe. You ask "who knows," and you are right to say there is a chance the video itself is a fake doozy. But ya know what? You can't get anywhere until you start considering possibility vs probability. Some people see an overexposed part of the film and scream ghost or UFO, but they have no concept of which is the more probable reality, the fascinating myths or the overexposure. Could you argue this video itself is a fake? Sure. But then, that leaves an awful lot explained by the video unexplained, like the Chinese in particular being an awkward "this side" in reality, although the translation widget got that from "this side up".

It's not a matter of guess and check or belief, if you actually want to look deeper and try to draw reasonable conclusions. the Chinese alone makes it difficult for the original to be real, if you understand it. You may not be certain, but you can be certain that you are probably right, if you follow me. And in reality, those of us that did some digging turned out to be right. Supervisors writing labels for stupid workers, eh?
