Someone mentioned that it was a fake because the connector was off center. But in reality this is a better placement for it because more than likely you'll be holding it on the connector side with your right hand. The connector would have been in your way if it was in the center so being typically apple they moved it up out of the way putting it off center.

I just hope that next tuesday they will have more to reveal than just this. I don't think this will be a replacement for the current iPod 30GB. More than likely they'll lose the 60GB 5G and replace it with this. A video iPod makes more sense on a larger HD plus they'll need the extra battery power to drive the bigger screen.

Is it real?

Ohh look!! A movie of my cat in the new iPod video!
Is the cat real??? or is it a fake??

I also think that this will replace the current 60g, more space for a bigger battery and plenty of space for content on the larger hdd although i very much doubt that they would make ANY change to the dock connector (inc. placement) as this would render any past 5g ipod accessories and docks etc. mostly useless... I dont' even really think that it looks off centre, the brown tape does create the initial illusion that it is but if you look close enough, especially when you compare it to the rendered 5g that someone very kindly overlaid, i looks like it is in the same place as it is currently.

If these pics are genuine, which i really do think is the case (and have done all along) then it makes sense to stick with the current design of the edges etc... another reason why i think these are genuine.

That lovely screen and any touchscreen tech and software that comes with it would really give people a reason to spend the extra £70-100 over the price of a 30g.

I personally have no reason to carry around 60g of music, although i do understand that some people do (i would dare to call them the minority!), i find a nice big Lacie (to hold my 30g ish collection) and a Nano does me just fine for the half hour spats that i require it for, but give me a large screen, a frontrow interface (negating any further legal challenges over UI's), WI-FI !!, and the ability to control and access all my media... I'M SOLD!!

..o and i want Asteroid too.. and a media mac mini... and my freaking macbook that still hasn't arrived!!

Hope that's not too much to ask Mr. Steve ???

Sorry to tell you this guys but it's a FAKE, but a very good fake.

Someone knows how to use the clone tool in Photoshop very well, the corners of the iPod are a DEAD give a way and the 'floating' look on the LCD screen.

When you look at the LCD screen it looks as though it is above the stick and the rest of the unit, plus the color intensity from the LCD is completely inconsistant to be a part of the actual image.

I'm sorry to say that this is a current iPod with a clone tool used on the screen and replace with a "techinal" looking colour test screen.

:D

I easily removed the photoshop info by printing it in save as pdf form, then saving as bmp, and changed extension to .jpg

why can't people think of this when they are photshopping.

Using the fact the image came from Photoshop is a bizarre method of proclaiming it's a fake anyway. I quite often crop images in Photoshop and save them. What else would I use to crop an image or resize it for the web?

Or should I be using ImageWell if I want to confuse the already confused?

If Apple really does come out with a player more geared towards video, don't you think firewire would come back? No matter what anyone says, Firewire is faster. I know on paper USB 2.0 and Firewire are supposedly close to the same but when I hook my 20 gig iPod up via USB it takes a lot longer than with firewire.

Really? How much is a 'lot'?

In theory that shouldn't be the case because the drives in the iPod are nowhere near saturating either USB2.0 or Firewire400. They just can't write that quickly.

That's not to say that your computer doesn't have crap USB speeds. I've come across a few USB 2.0 implementations that really suck. And USB2.0 needs more CPU power so if your host computer is under load the transfer speeds may drop.

The dock cable in the picture may be just the cable the manufacturer uses to test each iPod works. They plug it in, up pops a test card, they run tests and then proceed to the next iPod to test.

haha, you can see a slight indention on the black vpod... looks like there is some sort of paper or something cut out and placed over the top of a black ipod. plus the left corner of the screen is off with the corner of the vpod compared with the other plus there is an extra 1.2 millimeter space on the top left side compared with top right side between screen and bezel.

Still think Pippin II will be coming out. Hopefully, some new games for the ipod or maybe Apple has bought up a gaming house.

Oooopps, when the thread gets too long I read like the first two pages and the last 3 or so and I figure the middle is just people flaming and fighting over who knows how to spell or whatever.

Golden Words :p

In 2 lines, you described what happens in all 10+ page threads on MR.

I overlayed a 5G iPod on this image to check out what resolutions this device could pull off. Seeing as how 5G is 320x240, if you double that you get 640x480, which is VGA resolution. Look at the pic below and you'll see that the device basically doubles the screen size (= doubled resolution to VGA, right?)

BTW, the PSP is 480x220 and the Creative Zen is 640x480.

640x480 is 4X the resolution of 320x240, not double. That's why they call 320x240 QVGA - for Quarter VGA.

Glow says it's real..

If you look at the white side of the color bar screen where it meets up with the edge, the edge is showing the reflected light. This doesn't happen on the right side where the bar is dark. I'm thinking it's real. If it's not, this person did their homework.

Doesn't look very ergonomic. How would you hold it? Or grip it to plug in the cable? Or strap it so something like a lanyard? My guess is this is a fake, or more likely simply a prototype, but I don't think they would release this exactly.
Using my current iPod as an example, it's not a problem at all to hold it horizontally. Kinda like a tiny PSP with two hands, but just one hand is comfortable too. Besides, I think the UI will still be largely vertically-oriented. Someone posted a picture demonstrating that earlier this week (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v305/tylerdykstra/6gui.jpg)

And if one more person either asks or points out what the Chinese characters mean, my head is going to explode.

I reckon its a fake, but a very good one. There are a few cut / copy / paste marks on the image. Anyway I suppose it may be real but im not convinced.

I'm not saying this is real or fake, but those lines look just like the jpg compression lines that are all over the image. Plus, for such a great fake having a visible copy and paste line that was not even attempted to be blurred away seems unlikely.

Hehe. Ok, you may be right. I thought the lines looked a bit sharper than normal compression lines. Anyway, looks a little dodgy to me. I bored myself by doing those pics ;)

I reckon it will just be some new coloured iSocks !

Comparing the 5g rumor pic to this pic, there is a handwritten character that, while it is written slightly differently, it looks similar enough that I think it may have been written by the same person.

one thing i don't quite get is that, if this is an item being tested on a production line (which a possible explanation for the connector) then why would there be a sticker placed directly on the screen? i can't imagine that would be easy to remove.

perhaps an overzealous faker placing two realistic but mutually exclusive elements in the picture?

I will be watching Digg very closely. alex broke the last two release in the 24hours prior to release so I expect he's a good bet for next week.

Not to be a nit-picker but it was Kevin that got the scoop.

Dunno, does not look comfortable to hold horizontally to me, there's not enough there (on the edge) to grip, and cupping ones hand around it while holding it in a horizontal orientation (which is what you want for video) is not comfortable at all. If Apple were going to release something I'd say the screen might take up most of the surface, but one side of the horizontal aspect would have a grip, kind of like a PSP but with the grip only on one side instead of both. The device would have the ability to sense which way you're holding it and flip the picture accordingly (therefore, it'd also work for lefties, or you could switch off hands). This grip would also give a place to put a few physical controls such as power button as well as a lanyard hold and dock connector (and it gives you a place to grip the device while inserting and removing the connector).

Fake?

Wow, if this is the knew funny product Apple is revealing, im definitly gonna buy it(after I load up some mony after buying the MacBook Pro).

But the overall quality of this iPod seems a bit cheep, dont you think? I think its a fake. But the person who did this, did a really good job with the cloning tool. Its not easy to use that tool and make it look real, but he did it.

But anyway, I think its a fake.
