Sounds like a good way to spend a late night waiting up for an event. I'm saving this bottle of red wine I've got for Tuesday night so I don't stay up too late. Bloody 4am start time, who decided to hold this event in America I'll never know...

i will be out of town at a national sales meeting... sun - wed... :(

looks like i will be surfing mac rumors from the Pocket PC all day tuesday in our meetings! Damn i would love for this to be the real deal!

I've already told everyone this, they are Egyptian Hieroglyphics that read "iPharaoh - 10,000 songs in the pocket of Ra"

a trusted source earlier in the thread verified the translation as:

A little OT (sorry), but since we may be nearing the release of another iPod...has anyone ever gone back and read the forum posts when the iPod was first released? Man, those people were pissy. If only they had known what the iPod would do for Apple...

Man this stuff is gold:

I'd call it the Cube 2.0 as it wont sell, and be killed off in a short time...and it's not really functional.

Nice one pal. Bet you live in a ditch now huh? HUH?

If it really wanted to hit a home-run, Apple would have kept the 5GB HD and MP3 functionality while adding a color LCD screen and Newton/Palm front-end functionality. Check out this Sony Palm/MP3 player for $499:

I guess time does makes fools of us all.

You'd be surprised at how similar the translations can be - I assure you, I have a friend who can speak fluent hieroglyphics (you should hear him show off, he'll just be there at a museum and him and the curator will stand there for hours just saying stuff like 'Little bird, small man holding papyrus, dog with circle on head, man in boat' to which the curator would reply 'triangle, horse-faced bloke with spear, cat with circle on head' and for some reason they both crack up laughing) and he said it's definitely referring to the capaciousness of the Sun God's pockets and his propensity for buying Apple products.

Fake I guess?

EDIT: What I mean to say is that the Colour and B&W bars give off a very strange pattern that isn't really consistant with OLED or LCD. It's more consist from using the Clone Tool in Gimp or Photoshop.
It IS consistent with an LCD grid captured in a camera image that has its own pixel grid interfering: a classic moire. (There would be no need to clone in that area after all.)

I know this isn't the device in question but just imagine:

It is the size of an ipod video with a 100G harddrive with intel xscale processor, OSX mobile, full pda and ipod music / video functions. 640 x 480 OLED touch screen. It has integrated wifi and bluetooth headset for VOIP. It also has media extender / front row capabilities.
I'd pay just about anything for an OS X machine in my pocket. I don't even need frills--just something I can use in a pinch for little changes my clients send me--and that I can connect to any old keyboard and monitor that's around. (Something I do now by booting OS X from iPod... but that only works if there's a Mac around.)

But as you say, I'm sure no such device is expected soon. The market is there, but too small for now I think.

Nintendo DS lite. You can see it written on one of the other boxes on the left-hand side of the picture.

That, and there's no chinese characters. Anyone know what they mean yet?

ok. I'm going to tell you what this really is, and quite frankly its kinda obvious.

First of all time for a little Return of the Pod Episode 1 (for those of you that Dont know what I mean think about the first gen Ipod). Anybody ever get a serious scratch on those, NO (well at least not without effort). if you look at the picture you will realize the depth of the screen (if you cant notice this then concentrate on the plastic and look for an end, you can see this because of the lighting. there is depth) This leads me to beleave that apple is adopting a tougher plastic. How are they going to make this work? This of the latest apple patent, it was the ability to add digital camera type sensors in-between the LCD Tabs. Additionally you can tell that this is not a photoshopped version of an old ipod due to the fact that on the right side you can notice a metal strip, this most likly means that then metal not covers the side. Why? so that the sensors dont pic of surrounding items (this is due to the design of said sensors) additionally the dimensions are different than the current iPod. And the connector is that of the Multimedia ipod connector from monster,( which was used by SJ at MWSF) this is also used with 5G's that have the latest ipod Linux to record onto your ipod from an outside source..

There you go its REAL>>>>>

Weather it is a real APPLE product I cant say, but it without a doubt a real IMAGE

what the ****? where do you get all this from?

Very good points janitorC7. I wondered abiut the metal stripes too, but I totally agree with the way the touchscreen works.

It was a touched image:
JFIF\0\0dé\0\0¨ÓF\0¨ÓF\0204;\0Photoshop 3.0\08BIM\0\0\0\0\0\0?·\0hExif\0\0M

Snagged from textedit
How did find that out? All the image says for me is that it's a jpeg.

"control" click on the file -> select "open with" -> select "other" then choose "textedit".

It is not an exact duplicate of what I found - for some reason some of the characters would not display properly outside of text edit but "photoshop 3.0" is clearly visible in the first line.

I just was just sent this photo from another source. It was also sent to ThinkSecret and AppleInsider, but you saw it here first. Apparently was shot in one of the packaging places in China.

I'm not really sure what to think about it. It is such bad quality it makes me doubt that it is real (it was probably compressed to hide a bad photoshop job).

But I was impressed that it was still named like it had been taken by a camera. (although that really means nothing - as anybody can change the name of an image)

BTW: anybody know what those characters in the background mean? :p

I keep checking this thread every couple hours - not for actual iPod news, but to see how many more times people can bring up the freakin' chinese characters. Pure gold, you guys keep cracking me up.

What's the count at now?

Since there are almost 1000 posts now, I'd say there are probably 900 that mention those characters. :p

I seriously doubt those are actual characters. The tick marks on the characters are very, very odd for any character. And the style of writing is incredibly blocky and does not flow well and looks nothing less than a poor attempt at writing Chinese or that of someone taking lower-division Chinese classes.

Update: Given the video exposing the Chinese as purportedly being "This Side Up" I would still assert that at least the latter character, is at best, a very poor attempt at mimicking it.

Has anyone noticed....

Those strange looking characters....? French maybe ? Maybe someone brainy/French can try to translate them for us ??????????? ...then i think we may have cracked it!!

..LMAO

Its Fake

After thinking it was real for a while I have concluded that the original was a fake. I just concluded they don't use the product number as a barcode but the PRODUCT SERIAL. This allows the factories to track the ipods they are using for test or internal samples etc. A product number barcode would be pretty useless to stick on the ipod..... unless there was a product serial barcode on the back i am calling this fake.
