I know, it's been a running joke since 'is that Chinese?' and 'what does it mean?' have popped up at least a hundred times. My personal favourite non-'this side' responce was 'book of power on Wednesday the next.'

No harm meant.

Thanks for the 2 and F idea...I need to go back and look at it. But then...the only Chinese would have been on the iPod screen on the real 5G photo. This 6G fake (Hey, no Apple comment, various problems and severe ones with the Chinese) tried hard with the Chinese, but if I were the hoaxer I would have written "up" and have been done with it. My guess is that the guy put "this side up" into the translation widget or the like and tried hard to copy what he got. That seems natural and fully explains the odd handwriting and text itself. (The Chinese may mean only "this side" but try putting "this side up" into the widget...)

Noticed that all my Chinese characters became '?'s, so let's try again. The characters I was referring to was 这 for simplified form and 這 for the full ('traditional') form. The old 5G word was initially thought to be 平 but probably not.
 
I think this point has already been raised, but I don't remember seeing many responses.

The Chinese characters (what do they mean anyway?) Could they have been drawn onto the photo on the computer, just like the scribble over the date/time stamp? They could suggest that the image is meant to be viewed in portrait. The fact they fit over the tape could be co-incidence. The top and bottom distance (see yellow arrows in my illustration) are almost perfectly equal, suggesting the text could have been digitally placed centrally.

Might explain why they look a bit unnatural/simplified/drawn by a monkey/similar to a type face. Just a thought anyway.

EDIT 2: I've really got my head in a muddle and realised that the Chinese symbols have been established to mean THIS SIDE not THIS WAY. It is at this point I'm going to step away from the computer.

It's an interesting thought; but I doubt it. They are fitted perfectly over the tape, and wouldn't you type the characters if you were on a computer, making them perfect? - Those don't look perfect.

edit: that would be funny though...

your example picture is up side down and should be turned 180 degrees :)
also, the top and bottom distances are almost perfectly equal because the device was at the center.
people's hand writing are just too different to tell if they are fake.
i have a friend who's left handed but only writes with her right hand.
you wouldn't believe her hand writing.
but i still think the picture is a fake :)

For experimental purposes has this discussion indeed proceeded to flooring with "woodworkers" coming out of the woodworks ?

I must not have any kind of life...I have found this thread to be one of the most entertaining I have read in awhile:)

So today I am sharing this with one of my co-workers and he 's reading and then just starts laughing all over the place.

Well...I know its funny - but NOT that funny! So with a look that says..."splain yourself" or I'm goona think your off your rockers. He tells me to follow him - without going into detail where/what I work on - I do so to what we call the engineering/dev floor. He then proceeeds to bring some pics up on his laptop of his recent trip to one of our sites in China....

Okay...no apple poddy thingie here....but row upon row upon row of that SAME EXACT little brown piece of paper with different version of "this side" "here" and "up" charchters placed on the end of cabling.

I mean like literaly dozens in the shots I saw. All covered in heavy duty clear tape and on a variety of cables - connected to display and other devices in the testing/QC process.

He then explained to me that it was way common and typically it was idiot engineers like him that got stuck doing it when they saw all kinds of malfunctions because the folks couldn't figure out which way to plug it in or cable it etc. He stated that it was pretty rudimentary and he made them while he was there last month. Pulled up a computer translation of what he wanted, copied it and stuck them on!

He said most figure they would "improve " the process - but why bother when some tape and paper fix it...

So who knows if the pic is real...he actually had some interesting takes on it - and he's not an apple guy...but he said the tag on the cable end is as authentic as it gets. Either that's real or the hoaxter is an engineer!

BTW: Does anybody know what those weird characters mean on the cord? I think they might be Japanese, or maybe Korean... :p

Thanks for that story, made me giggle myself, thinking how ridiculous this thread would seem to someone who actually works in an engineering/dev department.

They're actually egyptian hieroglyphics - it reads:

Thats a really great observation, and it just confirms that this is real OR that the "faker" knows what he is doing more than we thought. Any chance of getting a hold of those pics?
