I just got my 60 GB video pod today. It. Looks. Awesome.

I bought some socks for it to put it in but the sleeve that came with it does wonders, especially on the back. it doesn't remove my fingerprints but it smears them in a perfectly vertical pattern. :p it also seems to be teh best way to clean the screen.

The screen has no scratches that I can see without looking in a glare. It has one that's rather prominant that's from me accidentally responding to the action of a dust particle on it with the reaction of brushing it off with my hand. do I think that is "easy to scratch?"

No.

Under any normal circumstance I wouldn't even concider that a scratch. But this debate... has nothing normal about it.

i am looking to purchase a silicone case for my ipod 5g black and wanted to know if the silicone case will scratch my black ipod when i put it in the case and take it out.

Damn it! I have had this thing for 2 hours. Really 2 hours. Took it out of the box, put it in the sleeve. Set it on the desk. Took it out of the sleeve connected it to the iMac.

Transfered one song to test sound quality. Looked down. I have hundreds of scratches on the screen!

LITTERALLY HUNDREDS!

WTF. Are the new iPods this easy to scratch that the protective case that they come with will destroy the iPod!

Anyone else have this problem with the 5g iPod?

I have a black G5 30GB black iPod that I've have had a for 3ish weeks, and I'm very happy with it actually... I'm not super-protective of it or anything, and I don't freak over scratches, but I can't notice much at all when it's not in light that shows its every little imperfection. There are tons of little scratches when you look soooo close, but they don't bother me in the least. Most of the time you can't even see them....

Excellent idea! The Martin Field protectors are fantastic. Crystal clear and really tough. The ones for the nano and the 5G pretty much cover the whole front area. They're not overly expensive so I'd rather get my iPod covered and not have to treat it like an egg.

Every iPod I've had since the 2G one has been covered in protection of some variety because they're easy to scratch. The newer ones just look more obvious.

haha, I feel like such a freak... I never use a case/cover on my 5G, and I'm perfectly happy with it. I feel like my scratching is minimal.

I got my black 5G today too and it actually seems to be less prone to scratches than my 4G, I know it might not be the case but it is for sure not more scratch prone. I. Love. It.

Scratches`

I don't care what anyone says, I expected more from Apple. And to everyone out there who says "its just a music player". No it is not. If I spend 300 on something it better be worth it, and this little piece of crap that scratched the instant i pulled it out isnt worth it. No. that is what we call shoddy craftsmanship. This is a ridiculous flaw by apple and i am getting my damn money back

have you ever owned an ipod b4?

I have to say I have a 30GB 5G iPod, I've had it for a couple of weeks, and its been in the crappy sleeve they sent in my pocket - and it's scratched SO MUCH. Looks like somebody has got a steel wool thing and wiped my iPod with it. I'm rather annoyed.

Just also so you know - my mobile phone has been treated in exactly the same way, and not a single atom of it's existance is scratched. (and my mobile is a super high gloss samsung D600)

I love macs. I have been supporting apple since the mid 90s - before the ipod even existed - before jobs was even hired back to save them from the beige box era. But I have a problem with the 2 of the 3 ipods that I have owned.
They scratch far too easily.

I just got a white 5g 30gig iPod. It is the 3rd ipod that I have owned.
I have also had a 4g and a mini. I bought a $20 case with the 4g. I pampered that thing and after 2 weeks - taking it out of the case 2 times - it was very scratched. Looked like I had taken steel wool to its front and back surfaces after only about a month. I bought a mini that is now a year old and it has no scratches. I just got a a 5g and it has no case yet. It is in the plastic sleeve that came on it. Even left on the stuff that reads: Don't steal music. :)
The open surfaces on all of the corners are already scratched after 4 days of light and careful use.

I have spent the time to post this because I love ipods and I want apple to improve the materials that it uses to make future ipods so that they aren't so easy to scratch.

I really do think that they are not all bad batches. I have one and it's been a week and it has absolutely no scratches after using it every day. Guess I'm lucky:). (and yes, I do keep it in the case it came with, IS is arriving on Monday though)

Unfortunate

I wish I some words of wisdom, but actually I have one coming and came on this site to read the good and the bad. I appreciate the heads up and please let us know what Apple does about this if anything.

I have owned every model till the 4g's.

I am reserving final judgment on my white 5G. What surprised me was the sleeve for the %g's with "purchase". Why were these not included with nano purchases. So far the sleeves have made me comfortable with my purchase decision.

Would Best Buy exchange my ipod for a new one? Mine is scratched as well on the screen. Theres some weird rainbow lines that are noticable as well all the time. I've had it for about a week.

To be honest, the rainbow lines maybe more due to "polarized" light issues than anything else.

All i got from that sentence was the lines were due to light with a negative and positive end. Heh sorry, got my definition of polarized from biology. I have to be honest, I did sit on my ipod at one point, and I'm not complaining about the rainbow stuff. I'm just wondering if they will indeed exchange it at Best Buy since it hasnt been 14 days since I bought it.

New Ipod scratched to Sh#t

I have had a 5g video ipod for 3days now. It is so scratched I can hardly believe it, I am not a freak and could care less about the scratches if all I did was listen to music. I like to watch video on it and this certain takes away from my enjoyment. This is the first apple product I have ever bought. I am 40 yrs old and believe me I know how to take care of my stuff. The ipod is a great product in what it does but the scratching is a real joke. I am so pissed off about it I am going to return it. Apple will not accept it back seening that its engraved by Apple free screw you engraving plan. Looks like Class Action Lawsuit is my only option. APPLE HAS BROUGHT IT ON THEMSELVES

Good Luck, all you ipod 5g owners

Invisibleshield

I found a place on line that sells the invisibleshield for the 5G video for $23.99 and the Nano for $18.99 with .01 shipping in the US. There is tax in Ca. Also if you type in the code THANKS in the promo code you save an additional $10.00 on orders over $50.00. www.techrestore.com

IPod scratch remover

I posted one reply before about fixing bad scratches (lots of em'), since I have an IPod that got scratched. The kit fixes major scratches so it is clear again and I have used it twice now. I keep scratching it! Anyway, There are a few products out there that might work, I could only find Merlin's LCD Magic in the stores here but it worked perfectly and there are other ones online that I found too. Don't give up on fixing it. Try an electronics store like Best buy. Or you might find something online if you search for LCD repair kit. Good luck with the search. :)

Apple changes their mind

A little update

After 2 hours on the phone with Apple they changed their tune. They are going to refund my money on scratched 5g 30gig video ipod that was engraved by Apple. However I have to pay shipping and 10% restocking fee. Not to happy about the 10% but it's better than no refund and having to pursue a lawsuit. I will still go and get another ipod as I believe they are a good product but this time I will get serious protection for the screen as now I am well aware of its fault. I will also say that if you think that the screen is of good quality good luck with that! Its the worst screen I have ever seen on a video display device for scratch resistance.

Apple Is Replacing My 5th Gen Ipod

I just sent my video ipod back today at apple's expense. After being sent thru several levels of management they agree to refund or replace at their expense. I did not think to take pictures of my ipod but the literally hundreds of fine hairlike scratches just from putting it in and out to the suede case that came with it a few times and wiping it gently with a soft cloth all in the first 15 or 20 minutes after opening the box. Held at an angle to the light it looked like the back of a dvd that had been left out the case and tossed around for a while. I was told that I was the first and seemingly only case that they had heard from. HA! I had to be persistant and just simply refused to take "no warrenty on scratches" as an answer. I also seemed to help that I complained within the first 14 days of ownership.

Here's a not so great shot (lousy photo skills) of my brand new 5G-60GB. The scratches in the lower left quarter of the screen area (in picture), have also occured in the top left and top right quarters of the screen as well:
54039546.jpg

The thing came out of the box Christmas so it's 2 days old. In that time (with the exception of syncing & charging) it's been in the Apple included soft cloth sleeve every single minute. Which actually tuned out to be a big mistake, since it's actually the sleeve that caused the scratching. Am I overeacting to normal wear an tear? With this kind of scratching after just two days of exceptionally careful use, I don't think so. But I also think it depends on how you plan to use to use your iPod too.

If you're just going to be playing music, or listening to podcasts then the scratches probly aren't such a big deal. In that case, as others have suggested, it's just a cosmetic thing. However, if you plan on viewing video at all, that's another thing altogether. Where even just a few scratches on the screen area will dramatically degrade the ability to view video.

For me, the biggest draw to adding a 5G to my mini ipod, was the video capaility. But with the screen showing this much scratching in two days of very careful use, it's clearly not gonna work for video in the long term.

All that said, other than the scratching I love the thing. I'm planning to exchange for a new one this week, and the new one will sit in the box till I have a fields/invisible shield cover for it. And, by the way, my mini (exactly a year old) has never been in a cover a single day of it's life. Carried around loose in pants pockets, etc. Yet no scratching at all. Comp that to the 5G, where after 2 days of babying it, it's already marked up.

Which is pretty funny since the non scratching mini, actually didn't need to be "non-scratch". Without video, I could've cared less if the screen got all marked up. But, with the onset of video/photo capabilities in the 5G Pods, the need for a clear screen has taken on new importance. And yet the ability of the screen to remain clear has actually regressed in a big way. Go figure.
