I can't get over some of the denial here. I don't know if it is simply an Apple loyalist thing, but if you have to baby a device to the point where normal use results in instant scratches...that's a problem. I am not an Apple basher...I work as a systems administrator, I use many platforms and harware, and Apple makes a good product (as do many PC manufactures too).

Having done alot of research before I bought my Ipod video (the first ipod I have owned) I knew that it would likely be easily scratched. I knew I would need to take precautionary measures to keep scratching to a minimum. But even still, it is hard to believe that a device that is designed to be a portable music and video player is so delicate. That seems to be a huge oversight. I can't get over the number of people who get so angry when someone suggests that the IPOD might have a design flaw. Don't get me wrong, it is a great device and very well made for the most part. It is the best player out there and it is special in that Apple does go the extra mile in making it almost a piece of art. I love the darn thing...I love having all of my music wherever I go and being able to take movies with me too. I am very impressed with the picture quality of the screen, and even the quality when shown on a tv.

That being said, it needs to be functional. Apple has to realize people are going to put this in backpacks, pockets, cars, and hold it in their hands. It's meant to be portable and therefore it needs to be able to stand up to expected use. My cell phone screen at 2 years old has not a single scratch, and you better believe I do not baby that thing. If wiping off some dust scratches the surface...that is not acceptable for something that costs $300. It just isn't.

Mine is not terribly scratched. In certain light, I can see many hairline scratches...a few on the screen. None are visable when the screen is on. I have it in a ISEE case by Contour. (of couse now I will have to modify my Universal Dock so it will fit with the case on) But I had hardly used it before getting the case for fear or ruining. How insane is that? And the fear is justifed, since I do have scratches for barely doing anything but putting it in and out of the supplied sleeve. There is no doubt it would be much more scratched had I actually used it normally. There are materials that hold up better than this..anyone with a cell phone knows this. Heck I am writing this on a tablet PC that I have had for 8 months. I WRTIE on the screen daily....NO SCRATCHES!!!!!!

Sorry for going on, but the reality is THESE DO SCRATCH WAY TO EASILY! They are not meant to be left in a museum display after all, so this is not acceptable. I don't think I am being unreasonable in my expectations either.

I agree with your entire post. The iPod technology is innovative and sound quality excellent ... however, they are incredibly delicate and the scratch issue is not something purchasers should be dismissive of, not given the price tag on Apple products.

New iPod 30GB for Christmas!

I just got my new 30gb white iPod video for Christmas :D. BUT, I admin it does scratch very easily, I noticed scratches on it right out of the box, my PSP has just as glossy of a display and not a single scratch and I've had it a year. I just ordered screen protectors (http://boxwave.com/products/cleartou...o-30gb_808.htm) yesterday $17+ with shipping for a piece of plastic, but it's worth it for my iPod. I noticed last night when I put my first video on it that there is a dead pixel, you can't notice it until the screen is dark.

Dead Pixels - Manufacturing defect, it happens on all newer LCD devices, as the displays get smaller and at higher resolutions there are instances where the pixels are stuck in the on (white or other color) or off (black or no color) state.

I am going to see if I can take the ipod to the apple store and get a replace ment that way when my portectors come in I can put them on a, hopefully, scratch free iPod. It is going to be a pain in the bu** though since my Titanium powerbook has only USB 1.1 and I have not purchased a USB 2.0 PCMCIA card. It took 3 hours to transfer all my music when I got the iPod! RIP firewire :(

I got a 30 G ipod video for Christmas. I've treated this thing like the crown jewels of the Romanovs. I've never treated anything I've ever owned with more care. The screen is now so scratched that I can barely see the bottom third of the screen. I've had it for a week. My cellphone, which has been dropped, kicked, dinged, smacked, whopped, clanged, mangled, and brutalized has as pristine a screen as it did when I bought it two years ago. There is no excuse, zero, for selling a product that, through the most delicate use imaginable, becomes practically unusable inside a week. I'm returning mine.

How is that possible. No offense, but if you treat it with such good care there wouldn't be so may scratches, or at least not to the point where you can barely see the screen. I too have gotten mine recently and I use it quite often and there are 0 scraches, although there are some fingerprints on the back lol. When you pay top dollar for something, it is expected you will take care of it

Guess you haven't read this entire thread. Many of us bought new iPods and handled them with absolute kid gloves, and they STILL got scratched. My theory is that the polycarbonate material has an unexpected design flaw which causes the material to spontaneously self-scratch if you even look at it funny. My first Gen5 iPod was never touched by anything but the included case, and it was all scratched to hell within a single day.

The only solution, it seems, is to buy a protective case for your iPod FIRST, and then immediately transfer the new iPod into its case so that it is NEVER touched by any cleaning cloth or your hands. Seriously, Kleenex can scratch these new iPods.

Absolutely return it if it's all scratched up. Took mine to the Apple store where it was bought this past weekend. Showed it to the manager and he exchanged it for a new one no problem (clearly they're aware of the issue at the store). Also, I overheard the salesperson by the iPods clearly stating the extra need for a case with the Video iPods. That's a new spiel at the store here.

The second the new one came out of the box, I put the Martin Fields overlay on it, and then put that in an Agent 18 case. Working out great so far.

Post pictures of yours?

I don't get it? I used my 30gig for a month with the supplied case.. Didn't get scatched to hell at all. No more than any other iPod i've owned..

Got a hard plastic case for it, and two weeks later the case is scatched to hell... Guess it's just an issue with plastic in general? :p

WTF. Are the new iPods this easy to scratch that the protective case that they come with will destroy the iPod!

i know what u mean. the same thing happened to me.. i have hundreds of scratches and i always handle it carefully. i think that the way it is made, the materials its made of, is easily scratched.

I talked to a watch guy at the local jewelry store - he is a master at removing scratches from watches. He said his magic only works on plastic, not glass. I asked him if he's ever tried it on an iPod and he said no. My son's new iPod Video (Black) is only a couple of weeks old and it is badly scratched. I'm wondering if I should see if this jeweler can buff it out

why would apple do this?

Okay, I Just opened my iPod Video (30gb black) and after removing it to a bare face I noticed a finger print. I wiped it with my soft cotton t-shirt, as I would my 2G iPod, and behold.. little scrates everywhere. I quickly put the plastic cover back on the face to avoid any more damage.

Why the hell would Apple make the iPod so vulnerable to scratches if it belongs in your pocket? This is ridiculous! What happened to testing? Hello??

Welcome to the same problem all the rest of us have been complaining about since the 5G iPod was released... it scratches if you even look at it funny. You literally cannot wipe it with ANYTHING without causing minute scratches. Generally speaking, the problem occurs because they switched from tougher-but-easier-to-break acrylic to softer-but-impossible-to-clean polycarbonate.

Get yourself a protective skin for your iPod ASAP. I recommend the iSkin Evo3... it provides 100% coverage and still lets you enjoy the iPod.
