I don't think so. Bought one a few months ago - not flush. Got a free one with recent MBP purchase ... not flush. I know they adjusted the iPhone's jack for the 3G last year, but the iPod Touch jacks I've seen do not look like those. <<shrug>>

Maybe my idea of flush is different than everyone else's? Maybe I'm just confused?

It is flush in the sense that you can use any headphones you like with the iPod touch. People are remembering the recessed jack on the iPhone that severely limited the headphones you could use.

It's a very sculpted design but the jack itself doesn't limit you choice of headphone.

160GB Classic wouldn't cut it, have already had one for one and a half years.
Has to be a lot larger than that.

I honestly think it is the iPod Classic OS that is limiting size, not hardware.
The OS can't handle that much media, it grinds to a halt. HOPEFULLY they have a new Classic OS for a new large capacity model.

As for the iPod classic, don't be surprised if we see one last "refresh" based on the 6G classic, but now with have hard drive capacity increased from 120 GB single platter drive to 160 GB single platter drive. This will be the last iteration of the classic until the iPod touch gets a 128 GB model in September 2010.
Does the iPod classic use 5 mm or 8 (?) mm hard drives?

Apple!!!

Apple, please add a camera and microphone to iPod Touch next time! Make sure I can take videos and pictures! I don't need the iPhone!

I would imagine the next iPod Touch having a built in microphone, as Apple seems to be heading towards interaction and connectivity (MobileMe: Push, iPhone: Voice Control) Adding voice control to your iPod Touch would be the most likely step, allowing developers a larger platform to work with. The only issue becomes differentiating the iPhone from the iPod Touch with Skype. However 3G will never come to the iPod Touch so GPS and more "Blackberry-esque" functions will never reach the iPod Touch.

As others have probably said already, I want everything the iPhone 3Gs has on it...except the phone. Give us that. Camera, Video, Internet, GPS, Compass etc etc.

Sorry, can't afford the $70 dollar A MONTH cheapest At&t fee. :(

I agree in principle.

I'm grandfathered into a plan with unlimited minutes for not a lot of money. The only way I can get the iphone is to pay full retail price, which is still cheaper than changing plans.

Im Really Looking Forward To September!

Im busting to get my hand's on Snow Leopard this september? Which will be mentioned at Apple's Media Event about a proper release date? And what i wouldn't give for an iPod Touch with GPS, Compass, Camera, Microphone, Better Graphics and a 64GB model, i feel pretty confident about a 64GB model, better graphics and a microphone!

Can't Wait! :D

awesome, an ipod touch refresh; truly unexpected.

unexpected? well, it's been upgraded since first Gen. ipod touch came out. it was September every year. first gen. is ipod 1,1, second one is ipod 2,1. so ipod 3,1 is definitely new 3G ipod touch. by the way, hard drive base ipod will be totally obsolete. just take a look at the market. flash is dominated. now, you can even install up to 256GB.

5mm single platter HDDs. Same as in the MacBook Air.

The thicker iPods used the 8mm double platter disks. These currently are at 240GB but I'd hate to see a classic at that capacity going from how laggy the 160GB classic was compared to anything flash based or even the smaller 5G iPods. My 30GB 5.5G iPod is far more responsive than any of the classics.

I also believe the iPod classic will vanish when we hit 128GB in the touch though I don't think that will be for some time.

I think you have a typo and meant iPod Classic.
Though I'm always wishing that the touch will inherit the classic's drive feature.
Maybe this round I'll get my wish. One can only hope :)

Everyone is speculating a camera as a lock in but can it or any other possible features fit in the current form factor. I know we can easily see a doubling in capacity (64GB) but I'm not sure how much else without changing the form factor. At this point, i don't know that they would want to change the form factor. I think it's a given that all the iPod Shuffle features will make it's way in but the hardware will be in the headphones much like the 3GS headphones were upgraded.

I seriously doubt we will see a form factor change to accommodate most of the speculation.

The question is, can the device support a camera in it's current form while increasing the capacity? I have SERIOUS doubts there will be video because I don't think the current form factor can support a capacity upgrade, camera, and on-board mic.

Unfortunately, Apple don't care if you or I cannot afford an iPhone and can "only" afford an iPod touch.

Apple will not blur the lines between the iPod touch and iPhone to the extent that all that's missing from the iPod touch is the phone. I noticed you also said, "Give us that. Camera, Video, Internet, GPS, Compass etc etc.".

The iPod touch already has internet via wi-fi, but if you expect Apple to provide the internet on the iPod touch via other means .... keep dreaming, it's not going to happen.

People seem to have forgotten that iPod2,2 was also mentioned. iPod3,1/iPhone3,1 are probably 2010 models.

Edit: I posted this a few months ago, the last time this was brought up:

0x1290 iPhone1,1 - iPhone
0x1291 iPod1,1 - iPod touch
0x1292 iPhone1,2 - iPhone 3G
0x1293 iPod2,1 - iPod touch 2G
0x1294 iPhone2,1 - iPhone 3G (previously unknown)
0x1295 iProd0,1 -
0x1296 iPod2,2 -
0x1297 iPhone3,1 -
0x1298 iFPGA -
0x1299 iPod3,1 -

thats a slighlty outdated list really the latest in the screenshot from the post reporting this only mentions iPod 2,1 and iPod 3,1

They only give those out during the back to school specials, which will end very soon before the ipod touch is released.

They'd never give free - new - ipod touches.

What he's saying is that he got an iPod touch with his mbp and he wants to sell it before apple releases the new one. No one is so stupid as to think apple would actually give them something new for free.

4G:
Hmm, how about Altimeter (no depth)?
5G:
Maybe a Barometer here?
Any altimeter is either based on a barometer and/or GPS (and barometer-based ones are much more precise but have to be constantly re-calibrated as the weather changes). For hiking a GPS-based altimeter is far less useful then a barometer-based one. I have an iPhone but still carry my barometer-based altimeter with me.

6G:
And a Thermometer?
To measure the temperature in your pocket?

The "Buy a Mac, get an iPod" has always been used to dump off the old stock of iPods over the summer before the new ones come out in the fall.

But damn! I want one NOW!!!!

Tough to buy one now knowing the new ones are coming so soon - but I guess there's no guarantee the new ones will be able to be jailbroken quickly, so a 2G is waht I want anyway...maybe I'll get a refurb from Apple....

What if I want to check my heart rate and my body temperature? That'd be cool.
