I personally think they're going to introduce two models

1. iPod Touch 64 gb with mic, compass, faster cpu and graphics
2. iPod Touch HD (250 gb hard drive) with mic, compass, faster cpu and graphics replacing the old classic ipod with hard drive.

Sorry, but no camera yet.
:)

You really think it will be 250 gb?

I'm surprised it took this long for someone to mention ipod HD with reports of a HD zune.

no man, apple is never going to make an ipod with a hard drive anymore. but i can still wish for it. i would so love to see an ipod touch with 500GB drive. thats what i want.

I have an ipod touch 32 gb.. man o man, is it slow transferring data back and forth to my notebook. i filled it up and it takes me over 4 hours to backup everything. This is silly. What would you think a 64gb or 128gb backup times be?

That's why i want a hard drive version where I can transfer data faster. These solid state devices are nice but DAMN are they SLOW.

I was not comparing with Zune HD... I was referring to iPod touch with HD or hard drive

iPod Touch with Accelerometer & Compass versus Sony PlayStation 3 Motion-Sensing Controller

I bet you can configure an iphone 3G S or to be ipod touch with Accelerometer & Compass to behave exactly like the upcoming Sony Motion-Sensing Controller.

Oh I knew what you meant. I just think it's interesting not a lot of other people are "asking" for HD. I'd rather have HD than a camera. But that's just me.
I certainly want HD more than I want any other feature mentioned in this thread.

Does it really take 4 hours? I had an iPod touch briefly last summer when I got a MBP, but traded it to a friend for an iPhone which I don't keep full of music of movies. So my backup times, though longer than I think they should be be, aren't four hours. Do you keep movies on yours? Is that what takes the most time?

What I'd personally use / benefit from:

- Some sort of cheap data plan
- GPS / compass
- video camera
- mic

And what I've just listed is basically everything that differentiates the touch and the iPhone. Hmm. I get the feeling this ain't happening. But even if it had the video camera, instant upgrade from 2G.

But I'm not buying an iPhone due to the horrendous plans over here (Ireland = O2 = $$ / €€)

Yep, full of movies, TV shows and games. i'm always downloading new shows and deleting the ones that I have watched. The initial backup takes 4 hours. The incremental backups are shorter from 30 minutes to 1 hour. Still this is pathetic.

I'm excited to see what happens with the next iPod touch. I'm not entirely sure what else they're going to do. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for OLED but I doubt it.

Lets see whats left (touch version)

1G and 2G:
First we got touch screen
Then we got Accelerometer (well, both actually)

3G:
Now we're getting Compass

4G:
Hmm, how about Altimeter (no depth)?

5G:
Maybe a Barometer here?

6G:
And a Thermometer?

7G:
Finally water resistant Altimeter-Depth meter.

Camera ... maybe
GPS ... probably not
Flush headphone jack ... hopefully
Compass ... probably not
Microphone ... would be nice
I would rather be surprised when GPS and compass are not included, simply because nav apps can't do much without GPS, and too many people now have to purchase other non Apple devices for fun outdoor stuff – quickly becoming a booming business.

iPod touch:
OLED display
720p video camera (iPhone capable of this, but not implemented; + auto focus still camera)
Mic
GPS (for use with Turn-by turn Apps)
Compass
Stereo Bluetooth
16-32-64 GB

iPod Nano
640 X 480 Video (+ auto focus still camera)
A camera/video + iPod would be a great combo for the iPod Nano
8-16-32 GB

goodbye classic

Just what I have been holding out for...I have the 1st gen touch...but didn't get the 2nd gen because i've been holding out for the camera..And yes, a mic in it would be sweet. I think it is possible they could do that.. but then really, it would be the iphone 3G without the phone. ;)

That's already possible with the iPhone – it can rely on GPS signals only, but combined devices i.e. with GPS and barometric data are far more accurate.

Pleeeeeeeeeease...just 64GB (or more), that's all I ask for. HD would be sweet but, all I really want is the capacity for more tunes. And the better less-fingerprinty screen that they put in the iPhone would sure be a nice addition too.

I don't see the iPod classic going anywhere anytime soon. It will probably get a slimmer case, and maybe a few new features but that's about it.

Well, if it gets GPS, it gets an altimeter, if the software utilizes it.

I thought a GPS just gives you latitude and longitude!
When did it start doing altitude?

Are they triangulating between 2 or more satellites with your GPS device to calculate the height? So its mathematical calculation and not true measurement.

Oh yeah, thats another thing-- Wouldn't it make sense that they might launch it in time for the back to school deal they usually do in the fall?

How come there isn't a MacPaint app for ipod touch? Or even MacWrite.

I would love to see Apple port HyperCard to iPhone OS 3.0. Do all your development on your ipod touch :) Create cards and put fields, text, and buttons on it and script using HyperTalk.

on mouseUp
put "100,100" into pos
repeat with x = 1 to the number of card buttons
set the location of card button x to pos
add 15 to item 1 of pos
end repeat
end mouseUp

on mouseDown
put "Disk:Folder:MyFile" into filePath -- no need to declare variables
if there is a file filePath then
open file filePath
read from file filePath until return
put it into cd fld "some field"
close file filePath
set the textStyle of character 1 to 10 of card field "some field" to bold
end if
end mouseDown

LOLZ. I LOVE THIS programming language!!!. Its the best language ever written!!!

Since Latitude and Longitude plus Time gives you the approximate Altitude.

Four even, and yes a barometric altimeter (Garmin user here) is more accurate, but that needs constant calibration, unlike GPS altimeters – which Apple or some app developer can release in a matter of days.

Everyone keeps saying "GPS". Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the TomTom set-up for the iPhone 3G/3G S (the cradle, I'm speaking of) have a GPS chip already in it like any other TomTom unit? Why would the touch need to have GPS, when the manufacturers/distributors of GPS hardware/software already provide the GPS chip?

(I really hope that the TomTom unit can be used with an iPod touch 2nd generation. I'm failing to see why it won't work.)

That's the question, because neither the WWDC keynotes nor the TomTom website says anything but: "enhanced GPS performance".

I guess that you should ask: "Why include a GPS device when the iPhone already has one?" since Tom Tom currently "only" speaks about the iPhone app.
