Ahh and as a new Tuesday approaches who's going to be predicting updates this week?
Place bets NOW! :D lol

Oh and just one more thing,
I decided to check the apple site today just for the sake of it.

It's not really that important but I guess it is an 'Ipod update' in a way, they've decided to lower the Lazer engraving price to £15.00 - It used to be £40.

As you guys in the US seem to be getting all the bloody offers for Ipods I think its about time we got some in the poor 'ol UK. Of course who the hell wants lazer engraving in the first place lol :)

Has been lowered in the Danish Apple store too...

You guys are lucky! nothing doing in the US.

It was about time that we europeans got some reward, given the higher prices we have to pay.

Same offer here in Spain, 23 Euros. :)

Release date...

OK...let's speculate again on a realistic release date for new iPods. The announcement about the leaked Music Service, imo, is what is holding up a release of new iPods. Certainly, Apple wants to make a big splash with their new service, and from what I gather, they are still finalizing licensing agreements with all of the record labels.

In addition, we have the looming War with Iraq that is currently dominating all the news. Apple would not want to release new products just prior to, on, or just past the time when bombing starts. It now looks as though we will be going to war sometime after the 17th of March; my guess is very soon after, like on the 18th.

There is a small window of opportunity for product releases on the 11th. Apple may shoot for this, giving them a week prior to the beginning of the War. If they miss this date, and the War starts, I'd guess that they likely would need to wait at least 2-3 weeks after the beginning of the war to let the news cycle normalize a bit and to be able to ensure some attention to their product release.

Apple is likely in a conundrum; I'm guessing the iPods are ready to go, but that the music service has a few details remaining to iron out. Do they go ahead and release iPods this week to beat the war, but lose some momentum by not announcing the music service yet...or, do they hold off on announcing iPods now, losing potential sales until the new Music service is ready?

What think ye?

Granted, I'm not an expert on this type of stuff, but I'm not quite convinced that they are making release decisions based on world politics. Now, I can see them putting off a release because of a *huge* event (like "Bush declares wary TODAY!"). But it's not like Apple releases and updates make the front pages of the newspapers. It's a different kind of news than that, and the folks who are really looking forward to those releases will probably be looking for them, regardless of whether it's a fast or a slow news day.

Truthfully, I think that the oblivious are going to be oblivious regardless of world politics, and those of us who are interested are going to be interested, regardless of world politics. Before I was in the market for first my ibook and now an ipod, I didn't ever go to apple.com, I didn't read the tech sections of newspapers or cnn.com, and I truthfully knew nothing about the company or what it was releasing. I think that's the way most people are, unless they are looking for something in particular. Or a true tech geek in general, which I am definitely not! :D

The News won't change anything. First, which updated apple product has been brodcasted on the news...? A new iPod and music service won't make it to the Television portion of News Media but the remember, the newspaper will always have the business and or technology section which would (war or no war) say something about the new iPod. I Honeslty don't see a new iPod next week but the chances of March 18th are really high. Because Apple 's iPod is now becoming a bigger portion in their profits, not to mention the mass competition, I'm sure apple is going to introduce the new iPods with a Big Bang! If you think about it, the iPod, to our knoledge at the moment, is only an MP3 player. There are a bunch of other Hard Drive players which also have MP3, Photo and Video playback features. Yes, we know the iPod is made for MP3's only and why it's so amazing due to it's simplicity, but think about the buyer who's camparing it to a bunch of players on cnet. Apple needs more than just the Label, old reviews, simplicty and it's capacity to sell the iPod.

Sure, but I can guarantee that they are looking at the world >>ECONOMIC<< situation in order to decide when to release new product and how many to produce to meet demand. I'm not an expert on this stuff either, but I'm quite convinced the war will have an effect on the economy, and the demand for consumer luxury items like the iPod.

I dont think a war will effect the release if apple products, that would be just ridiculous and give apple some self sense of importance.

Please keep this thread to ipods and leave war discussions to those who think people care about their opinions.

Miss my point...

If Apple were ONLY planning on releasing new iPods, I don't think current news would matter...an update to an already existing product is not big news...

My point is that the release of the new iPods will be SECONDARY to the announcement of Apple's new music service. And it is this announcement that Apple will want to get a lot of coverage for.

The "rumor" of such an announcement made front-page news in at least a couple of major newspapers. So, when Apple actually makes the official announcement, I suspect this will make news. And, it is precisely this news coverage that Apple is after when they craft a release event.

Additionally, if Apple only cared about those who follow this information closely, they'd never "hype" their stuff, nor time their releases. But, it is precisely to reach those who don't follow this stuff closely that Apple acts as it does. A huge aspect of marketing is timing your product releases such that they will gain the attention of those who might otherwise not hear about your product.

To this end, I think it remarkably naive to think that Apple is not considering the current News cycle when deciding when to release new products. The impending War with Iraq is a monumental news story. Releasing an important new product (the music service, not iPods) on the day of or shortly after the beginning of this war would severly impact the ability of Apple to get the message across to a large number of consumers.

I guarantee you that Apple marketing is aware of this...

vanillamike: That is a perfectly relevant topic for iPods... the war will affect release of products, including iPods. I don't see why that should be taken from the iPod thread.

Oh, and I have it from a reliable source that the new iPods will be released "some time soon." ;)

Wow, with information that detailed, your source MUST be Steve Jobs' assistant!

(Couldn't help it. Sorry... :p )

Never said it should be removed or "taken from the iPod thread", all I said was the point is noted.

I also never said it was irrelevant, all I said was that it could be discussed in a forum that has a focus on current issues.

If you look up the thread I agreed that if war breaks out March 17th (deadline for Iraq to disarm) it would make sense to hold off the release on March 18th (rumored to coincide with the ending of Apple's promotion on the 10GB iPod).

This iPod holdup hurt a lot of rumor site's credibility...

True. True. (Watchin' the forums and having a Bud.)

Stating the obvious, but... I'm so sick of all the hush-hushness from Apple, and you're right, Billy. All these rumor sites appear far less than credible. I'm about ready to unsubscribe from this thread. But I won't, 'cause I'm an InfoWhore...

...And, hey, I WANT A FRIGGIN' PowerPod!

vanillamike: Sorry for the confusion, I meant it has to do with iPods, so it should be here. But you're right... no more need to discuss here, I think.

I don't think the i->power theory holds true, but I could be wrong. But look at the eMac. Are we going to have an ePod... with a CRT screen, a little thicker, not as nice looking? :p

I will check with my source after the iPods are released if there are going to be Powerpods... that's when he gets back from cleaning Steve Job's pool in Florida. After the iPods are released.

BillyShears: Sorry for getting edgy, guess im hoping the war will be everted.

As for the ePod maybe that is what that plastic enclosure over in the page two rumors is for. 5"x7"x1" sound about right for an ePod :p I can see the catch phrase "only one inch thick". In true eMac style it will weigh in at just under 15lbs.

Waiting

I'm waiting for the new one as well. I was really hoping they'd be out by my birthday, but they weren't. So we wait. I wish it were tomorrow, but from what I'm seeing as far as supply goes, I think we're more likely to see an early release of The Matrix: Reloaded.
Ho hum,
feeling glum,
just want the new iPod to come.
