Like others have said, 20MB isn't a whole lot. If all you're going to do is check websites, weather, Facebook, email you'll be perfectly fine. If you plan on streaming music (pandora), videos, downloading apps, then you'll have problems.

If you have a corporate discount, it might not be too bad. 2GB is only $6.50 more than the 200MB plan on my account.

200MB should be complementary and included for free as soon as you sign a smartphone contract. The carriers are making a killing by charging for it.

If you are using wifi 75% of the time and only email/websurf lightly, 200mb will work for you.

although, the term "lightly" is subjective

I use about 400-800mb a month.
My activities daily are
-Reading emails about 10-15 a day.
-Lots of news/article reading. About 50-100 according to my google reader trend.
-Maybe one or two appstore updates

There are months where i go over 2-5gb lol, usually stuck at airport watching youtube videos. But i got unlimited data plan so no worries.

So far since i got the iPhone4S i have used 1.2GB

You can strictly monitor your bandwidth usage in iOS setting. If you seems to easily reach 200mb you can always upgrade at anytime. you are not bound to the $15 200mb plan. You can adjust it as needed.

I probably will need to... Yeah I have unlimited on sprint. So spoiled at this point. I am glued to my EVO all day and surfing most of the time.

Carriers need better plans/pricing..to me 200mb is a joke..I can use that in like less then 1/2 hour..I use 4/6 GB a month no tethering yes pandora/YouTube ect I use a lot at work and driving..I asked AT&T if they can do roll over data they said they will look into that.dont think will happen:rolleyes:

I have wifi at school, work, and home, so just mainly use data when I'm out and about. I only have the 200mb plan and I have maybe felt restricted once or twice, and that was when I was out of town for a week with little/no wifi. I usually don't download a lot, but I do get probably 3-4 apps a month with the 3g, use facebook, twitter, maps, safari to google something, and the occasional wikipanion. I do also have all my notifications (email, fb, etc.) to be checking every half an hour for new things, so I'm not restricted to manually pushing for all notifications and I always have my 3g on. My wife, on the other hand is on pinterest constantly and she was about at 100mb 8 days into out plan, so we are probably moving her up to the 2gb plan. It is very simple to do that in the middle of the month...

Agreed... In my perfect scenario data should be priced;

Either free with contract or $5 - 200mb
$15- 1gb
$20- 2gb
$40- 4gb with hotspot
$60- unlimited with hotspot

Then you've answered your own question.

Well the question was is it enough... As in is it even doable. I of course plan on cutting back, like I said in an earlier post I am trying to tighten the financial belt and save some cash.

Saving up for a Radio Flyer!

Carrier gouge us for cellular minutes plans, rake in the mulas.
People started talking less because they can text.

Carrier gouge us for text message plans, rake in the mulas.
People started using VOIP/freetext apps via dataplans.

Carrier gouge us for data plans, rake in the mulas

Why? because they know we will still pay for it while crying because we can't give up our data access addiction lol.

I should start a kick start and make my own mobile network and call it Fair Mobile and be the first reasonable network in America. :p

I just recently switched from 2GB to 200MB plan. Just keep wifi on, the phone connects to remembered network very quickly.
I'm always near places with Wifi (home, school, stores with AT&T hotspot) I am rarely using my 3G data. Plus AT&T will send you a reminder whenever you reach 65% of the limit.

How is it going for you so far? How many days into your month are you? How many mb's used?

Let me tell you based on my 3G phone experience...

I average about 200-400MB per month without using much at all. I might have downloaded a game or two from the apps store..and access the web about 30 minutes while waiting in line for something total for a month...and it hits 200-400MB.

Trust me...I'm not a heavy user at all. I believe you are able to change your plan right? Use it and see for yourself and then change the plan.

I use over 200mb in a day. I don't feel like limiting my iphone when I bought it for the purpose of being able to use it anywhere and how ever much I want. Looking forward to getting my 4s jailbroken so I can continue using my phone how it is intended. Download everything I want, regardless of size. Many people may not like ATT, but I still have my unlimited data so I'm happy.

I didn't realise how expensive plans were for those living in the USA.

I'm on a sim only plan (bought my iPhone separate):
£10/month (around $16)
300 minutes (anytime, any network)
Unlimited texts
1gb data

I know a friend who's getting:
£35/month (around $56) w/ an iPhone 4S included (Phone cost £99) -
2000 minutes
Unlimited texts
Truly unlimited data

UK plan prices seem pretty cheap compared to USA ones

As said before, the size of the country has a lot to do with it. The more a company pays to make towers the more they will charge.

For reference: The land masses of the USA & UK are 9,826,630 sq km and 244,110 sq km respectively, making the USA approximately 40 times bigger than the UK.

I used to have the 200MB plan, I upgraded to 2GB about a week ago ($20.50 with my 18% FAN discount).

I was always in places with wifi, so I did most of my web surfing with wifi. I usually ended the month with 100-150MB used.

Why did I upgrade? I do a lot of traveling where I do not have access to wifi and I like to use the internet and listen to Pandora or iheartradio.

It's very much possible to do a lot of data intensive stuff with just 200MB, you just have to manage your usage well. If you have a teenager, do yourself a favor and get the 2GB plan.

EDIT:

Just as an example, my iPhone 4 usage on the 200MB plans was as follows.

Push notifications on. 3 e-mail accounts.
Check the weather app in the morning (wifi)
Check 5-8 news apps (wifi)
30-60 mins of web surfing per day (both wifi and 3G)
Use Maps a few times a month (3G)
Never downloaded apps via 3G, only on wifi.
Only updated apps via wifi.

American mobile phone companies are greedy... I personally despise AT&T. But Joining them knocks my bill down from 69.99 to 24.99 plus the 15 dollar in B$ taxes.

Most of the rest of the world is way more forgiving with their plans, been like that for a long time. I remember visiting my ex in London a while back. Her mobile plan out there beat the crap out of mine, no cost for incoming texts or calls...

Sorry to go off topic, but when I heard that the US phone companies bill your incoming calls/sms I was astonished. For a bloke from europe, this is truly unbelievable. Here, you only pay for incoming calls when you roam (you pay per minute) - makes sense, since you are using someone else's network. Receiving sms is free anywhere you are...

Just for Information: I pay about 25€/month (o2 in germany) for unlimited calls to o2, landlines and data (though they throttle bandwidth for 1+GB) and I get 50 free sms worldwide :)

Well at this point now though there are many unlimited minute and unlimited text packages that are cheap (mostly unlimited mobile to any other mobile). Though most of the time neither are used nearly as much as data these days and the companies are just raping us with data charges. Sprint is the most generous with unlimited data but they tack on an extra $10 for smart phones. They originally said it was for the 4g WiMAX but that soon turned into all smart phones. So their cheapest plan is still $80 a month before the taxes, which is up to $15 or more.

Does Anyone know if visual voice mail uses your rated data on AT&T? How about picture messages? I found a few conflicting answers on google.

I know I'll surely be keeping my iMessage off since I have unlimited texts and only 200mb.
