Apple should design the phone so that the lenses are more recessed in the case. Problem solved.
Seriously?! You’re the first person to think of this? No engineer at Apple ever thought that this might be better? I give you my most heartfelt golf clap.

I thought I would be, but I'm actually not.
The thing is, if it can't lay flat on the table, it no longer matters if it's 1 degree off or 3 degrees off.

You could argue the older iPhones could lay flat with a case, and cases can no longer be thick enough for that to happen, but really there's rarely a practical reason to have it be flat, except when you're trying to use the bubble level maybe. But then you could just let the bump hang over the edge for that.

The lenses are sapphire
Old post, I know. But I feel this has to be corrected. The lenses are not even close to sapphire. Sapphire scratches at a mohs level 8 or 9, these lenses scratch at a 6.

Zack's testing shows they're even worse than the ceramic shield.

How is it not a practical reason? iPads lay flat. Most phones lay flat. The 12 pro lays flat.

There’s no excuse for it. It’s a phone, not a smart camera.

People still use tables?
Seriously, I never use my phone on a table. I may put it on a table when I am not using it, but that is all.
I expect there are many others that think the same way, that use on a table is just not very important.
Obviously not everyone feels like this, but they may be the minority.

What Bump?

The iPhone 12 Pro had a camera bump too. Hell, the camera bump exists on every iPhone since the 6 (except the 1st gen SE). iPads have lower end cameras. Many folks buy camera phones to take pictures, so it may be a phone to you but for others it is more.

Anyway, optics are the reason why the bump exists. There is a minimum distance that must be maintained between the lens and the image sensor. With your idea of recessing the lens, the sensor would have to move as well. But the screen is in the way. The phone could be thicker (which would also give more space for the battery) but Apple doesn’t seem to be interested in that option.

There are cases that compensate for the camera bump but they’re thicker. Check the web
