I have no use for change, just for the sake of change. Do you get bored with your hammer, "these sciccors never change". As long as it continues to function well, I can't see the "it's boring" argument.

It's a phone, not a tool, you aren't using a hammer everyday like you are with your iPhone.

I have owned iPods and iPhones as long as I can remember and can honestly say I'm extremely bored with Apple's operating system.

It's not hard to improve android when its first iteration sucks and you can't do any worse. Conversely, I would say apple managed to nail iOS right the first time, so there really isn't much they can do to improve it barring piecemeal upgrades or a complete redesign of the UI (which may not be any better).

The Apple ecosystem is just too tempting, especially with iOS 6/ ML. If I didn't have a Mac, I'd probably more on the Chrome/ Google side of things, but OS X is just too awesome to leave.

You don't need to give up OS X to get into the Google ecosystem - it's just as functional as it is on Windows...

The problem with mentioning Android or Jelly Bean in an Apple crowd6 is that it gets a knee jerk negative reaction and they end up missing the point. Its not about wanting to switch or jealousy, it's about seeing an utterly crappy product like Android 1.0 take gigantic leaps to get to Jelly Bean while iOS continues to take tiny stepsand then have them rely on the excuse makers to justify why a crippled Siri or non-google Maps are so awesome.

Every Apple customer knows that this company can do amazing things so this "boredom" is due to us knowing that Apple could also make gigantic leaps but are choosing not to because their success allows them to limit themselves since they'll sell a billion products anyway. (This is also why I hope all those questionable design patents get tossed out. Apple is a better company when they let their products talk rather than their lawyers)

I'm not so sure I'm following you here. In fact I think you're completely off base with your opinion. As an owner of both OS'es, I've discovered plenty of reasons to enjoy both Android and iOS. Android, like iOS is exactly the same with their refinement/point updates ... ICS is truly a BIG step up from Froyo or Gingerbread, but Jelly Bean from ICS-not so much! They're ALL approaching maturity in relation to their initial '1.0' release 4 years ago.

Several have made the point that the OS is a springboard to access apps, programs and the software that we purchased the phone for. Do I enjoy customizing my GNote a bit with Widgets? Sure! But that's over after about 17 minutes of owning the phone...after that I'm ready to actually use the phone ...whether it be to make a call, snap a picture, update my websites...or read an email. The OS is a doorway. What and how you customize what's on the other side of the threshold is what makes the phone such an important part of our every day lives. Not the OS. Windows XP lasted almost a decade, preceded by '98 and '95. A trio of the most successful OS'es in computer history. Over Almost 20 years, very little change other than under the hood improvements and refinement...same as OSx (Lion was a big change I'll admit-as is Win7 & Win 8)...but we are talking millions of lines of code as a foundation. Not something you just throw away every other year and rewrite again from ground up!

Wouldnt upgrade from iPad 2 unless it broke. I can watch movies, read emails, see all my fav websites, do some admin back panel stuff on the go etc

It's a tool more than anything for me, I liked the hammer analogy. If adobe make some feature rich photoshop then yeah would upgrade to a more powerful iPad to handle it.

I recently bought the galaxy nexus just to try what jelly bean with project butter has to offer.

Overall experience is smooth. IOS is still smoother, but jelly bean is a much improvement from ICS.

What annoys me is the smoothness only applied in the OS and default apps only. 3rd party apps still not smooth maybe not updated to support jelly bean.

For example scrolling in tapatalk still lag.

The widgets on jelly bean and customization is nice but it gets boring too. I prefer iOS with its amazing appstore. Nothing can beat that iOS ecosystem yet.

Then I got one word for you: switch

I bought a Nexus 7 and returned it. It was ok. Google has done a great job with their wonderful iOS clone.

Must say I find it strange that today we can get "bored" with an iOS on a phone. It's as if, in the OP's opinion, the iOS is meant to entertain us. It's there as an interface for the phone. If you can use the phone to your satisfaction who cares about how entertained you are. I have the iPhone 3GS (and will get the 5) and it has worked very well for me over the last 3 years. I don't sit and stare at it saying "You're boring!".....

What I find really sad it's that with iOS devices Apple is becoming what it's never been but always accused to be: a company with a following of fashion victims, only able to think about the exterior of a product; people that needs a different phone to exhibit, that needs a new UI to not feel inferior to an Android owner etc.

It's not the iPad UI that is boring, it's that you probably should focus on more important things in your life that graphical elements of an OS or the clothes in your closets.

iOS is getting stale for me. If I get the next iPhone, I'll have used iOS for 6 years by the time that contract is up. The problem is that Android hardware often comes with compromises. If an Andriod phone came out that matched the iPhones hardware I'd be tempted.

I wont say I'm bored with ups because it does what it's suppose to do get you into the apps of your choice. One thing we have to remember is that google changed android basically out of need more than choice the need was keeping along with Apple. Now I like Jellybean it's real smooth and very capable right there with iOS. In some ways it even surpasses iOS in some ways.

IOS all in all doesn't need a fresh coat of paint maybe a new direction on the home screen and open up multitasking more but all in all this glorified app launcher does its job very well and doesn't get in the way of the user

Idk if the UI needs to be changed; Apple has chosen a defining look for it that has become an essential part of their brand identity. They can't change that overnight, or in just one upgrade cycle. It works, it's simple, and I think that's what they aim for.

On the other hand, you could just jailbreak your phone.

To me the iPhone is a great toolbox, more like a Swiss Army knife than some of the single-purpose tools in my studio or kitchen, but still essentially a utilitarian object. It's proof that an object can be utilitarian and have a great design.

Boring utilitarian objects are good, no? Boring in the sense of reliable. I mean the last thing I want is for my car to start acting like some jack-in-a-box, popping another surprise off its secret little shopping list every month. My can opener is the most boring thing in my kitchen, similarly the dressmaker shears or appliqué scissors in my studio. They were all chosen with care, and are appreciated, but the only likely status aside from "boring" for such gear is "infuriating" in the event any of it stops working.

As far as the iPhone itself being boring? I don't even like switching out how I have the buttons, although I do mess around with them when I add an app now and then. I admit to having spent some time on exterior fashion, picking out a green bumper and that black WaterField suede jacket with the stretchy mesh pocket, but that's just cosmetics. Under the hood I like the iPhone to be how it's been for me, low maintenance, functional, standing up to my expectation that it "just works." (After a quick turnaround of one that had call quality issues :D)

i am looking forward to better multitasking but to be honest, every time i start wishing for a new UI i am reminded about how rock solid iOS is performance wise. i've had an iPhone 4S since November and my iPad 2 since May and i have never had an app crash and i haven't had to reset either device since i bought it brand new.

unless apple can promise a flawless experience for their next UI, i'll choose to stick with this. coming from a blackberry, iOS is heaven and the BB OS was hell

I had blackberry too. IOS is heaven compared to blackberry. Would be nice if the bored folks could use a blackberry for about 6 months, then return to IOS. Bet they'd never complain again.

Some of us do use a hammer, as well as other tools, every day. The tools I carry on my belt are extensions of my arms. I need those tools to always act and perform the same way every time I use them or I become less effective on the job.

That said, the iOS is just a way to organize and access the apps (more tools?) I use. I don't stare at the home screen all day.

Yes, but iOS is limiting. It could do more.
As has been said elsewhere, in the future split screen so you can see two specially written apps at once. Like your email client and web browser, or TV playback and web browser side by side.

Probably need the screen changing to 16:9 or 16:10 like everyone else, before that could be practical for Apple to do and I feel it's going to be a LONG time before they do that change.

ipad is a great device, but it is too limited for me and I am really looking foward to Surface, with x86 programs, a real os where i can store and organize docments, and a true wacom pen functionality for design and math. Meantime, i pad is an excellent ereader and ocw viewer--and i never tire of things that always work!
